Not being able to read Japanese totally sucks when a lot of good games get announced or featured in the pages of Famitsu and other Japanese gaming magazines. Oh well, at least there are still some people out there kind enough to translate the stuff for everybody else.
According to a post on NeoGAF, Hideo Kojima doesn't reveal a lot about the next MGS game in the interview apart from confirming that it takes place in the "Metal Gear Saga" timeline. There's also a hint that the game will cover different time periods. Interestingly enough, he never once referred to the guy who general concensus thinks is Big Boss as Big Boss. Kojima just kept referring to him as "this old man". The patch on "Big Boss"'s beret also has a different-looking symbol. Maybe it's not Big Boss? Kojima also mentioned that the system of the game will be new, although he refrained from elaborating. The MGS4 staff will be handling this one, and while the core target is Japan, there will definitely be a worldwide release. There's also been some talk about who the character shown in the left page of the first scan above is. Some say he's Raiden, some say Gray Fox. I'm leaning towards the latter (the damaged eye, the bandanna, plus I just think he's more badass) but there are timeline issues that seem to rule it out. Oh, and he's dead, so there's that too. Then again, this is freakin' Metal Gear. Cloning, nanomachines, hypnotizing yourself so you think there's another guy living in your hand... ANYTHING's possible. And different time periods? That is SO Gray Fox. Scans courtesy of Wii @ Everyday. Related articles: |

interesting, i feel the story might be in between 3 and 1, big boss probably met gray fox earlier than solid did
(but the picture really looks like raiden to me...ehhh)
i'm pretty damn sure raiden wasnt even born yet in big boss' earlier age, and another damn... gray fox did not have eye patch in 1... very confused here lol

Well, it's true that Big Boss did meet Gray Fox before Snake did.. I mean we find out that he met him when he was just a kid, then later during MPO when he joins Foxhound. But this isnt Gray Fox, it's Raiden. I'd prefer a Gray Fox game though

» "LOST"
I think the new Metal Gear will go the route of the "LOST" Season Finale. Basically the game will show multiple time periods from multiple characters. You'll be able to view Historical facts From the "MG" saga from the characters that were there as they happen. I'm Happy with that...

"There's also a hint that the game will cover different time periods"
Thats interesting. So there is a high possibility that its Raiden on the left page from current time period.

» Playable flashbacks?
I get what he means, that'll be interesting to see if it's executed well.
It would seem that, if that is Raiden, the game will have two storylines. For example, one minute you could be Big Boss sometime between 1970 and 1995, the next you could be Raiden between 2009 and 2014 working for Big Mamma.
Very Lost-esque method of story-telling. I honestly, can't wait.

» Speculation...
I dont care when the game takes place, its gonna be DAMN good! Hideo is hands down the most reliable developer ever... oh and shout out to his staff, one man can't do it alone.

Well, the fact that he interviewed with a Playstation magazine make me inclined to believe that this game will for sure show up on at least a PS system. Also I might go so far as to say it'll likely be exclusive (well especially if it ends up being a PSP game). Wouldnt that be cool if Sony announces a new PSP model, and Kojima ammounces that this'll be one of its launch titles? Just like with the original PSP.
Gives me tingles.

It's obviously Raiden, but I think it's a little stupid to have something covering his eye, as if he's supposed to be as legendary or badass as Big Boss. Multiple timelines are possible. It'd have to be anyway, seeing as how Raiden didn't get 10% badass until after MGS2, and Big Boss died during MGS4. Hell, it might take place between 2 and 4. No one said Raiden gained his ability *in* 4... Could have been right after 2.
"...some old man" might just be to throw us off from thinking it's Big Boss. The patch may look different, but you have to remember that after MGS3, Big Boss had his own vision, and eventually Zero took Sigint and Paramedic while Snake had Eva and Ocelot. My just be a beret from those times.

In MGSDB, they mention Raiden going to Area 51 to rescue Sunny and is fitted with an exoskeleton, I havent read it lately so I'm a little rusty. So this means he gained it before MGS4 and after 2.
The beret though, makes me think that it is Big Boss.. the logo is shaped into a skull from the side. But thats not the reason.. my reason is that after Big Boss left the patriots, he didnt officially pick up Foxhound until a few years before the original MSX games. During his time outside of the patriots, he went around from war to war joining various armies and becoming the legend.. or something.
I think he takes control of Foxhound shortly after meeting up with Gray Fox again who is now with Naomi.. he helps getting them back into the country acting as their guardian. Again I'm a little rusty.

What do you expect from an article that's about speculation on a new possible MGS game? MGS4 came out almost a year ago, so it's your own fault for encountering spoilers.

No way is that Gray fox, the suit the Hair the bottom jaw.... It's Raiden 100% Gray fox died before he got a flashy new suit. Maybe because this is set over different time periods you play as big boss as people say and then move on in time to play Raiden after MGS2, because since Raiden became badass everyone wanted to play him again so this might be it!!!
Also when I first heard that it may not be big boss my first thought was its Solidus, would make sense because of all the brothers he has the more shady background and maybe we find out more about him and "Jack" ie Raiden!

That is NOT big boss. His hat is significantly different. Unless this is some sort of unseen future... I highly doubt it though. And Raiden is also seen in a famitsu ad... But Raiden is dead... So either, this is in the past, or it takes place in an alternate future.

Raiden has blue eyes and fox has brown Ive checked im 100% sure that is not Raiden check yourselfs its not like Kojima would all of a sudden change his eye colour check yourself and if you kinnda notice there could be a clue behinde this because Big Boss isint wearing his Bandana and on the other side you have either Fox or Raiden wearing it and covering his other eye why would Big Boss take off his Bandana the only person he knew that time was good old Foc so that might be him

Upon closer inspection of the ninja, the eye color is a bit hard to make out due to it being a scan and all...But the facial structure seems kinda...feminine to me. Kind of supports the Sunny theory...
But then again, they probably just got some fail modeler to do both of these, and they might really be Big Boss and Raiden. Eh, we'll know in a few days.

» My guess is it is BIG BOSS in his early years
The reason I say this is because if you look at the patch
on the beret, carefully. You can see the following words
(Militaries Sans Frontieres ) which means ( Soldiers without Borders ) . Which is a hidden message that Hideo Kojima is referring to the Australia′s SAS (Special Air Service ).
Which BIG BOSS was in the SAS in his early years. Hideo Kojima is a absolute die hard fan of all that is special operational warefare and all that has to do with it.
He most likely got his inspiration for the inscription Militaries Sans Frontieres ( Soldiers without Borders ) on the patch from a book written by Ian McPhedran : Soldiers Without Borders: Beyond the SAS.
If you look at the geological terrain on Hideo Kojima web site it is closest to an Australian or African dry grass field plain. Hinting the story would take place in either or country. Which would in turn put right inline with the events that happend in Zanzibar land or Outer Heaven .
I just think Hideo Kojima tie together the early events and history of the metal gear series .

» I have to agree with you
Where do you get all this information, sounds very true. The fact that it says it covers different time periods leads me to think that it is both Metal Gear 1 + Metal Gear 2 in 1 game.
I have to say it is definitely Big Boss, not Solidus as he has his eye patch on the other eye! Also just because he's not wearing his bandana doesn't mean it's not him. He's a leader in the Patriots and leaders were berets!
As much as I think the other person is Raiden, I have to say that it must be Gray Fox, as Raiden is much too young to be in MG1 + 2!
Hope everyone sees the truth in this!

» Another thing id like to point out
Both Raiden and Fox have white hair just to let you guys kno that and Raiden never been injuired in the eye it maybe just a new person but i highly dont think so hpeflly Kojima will bring a Trailer of MGS5 imagine its not MGS5 and just a DLC 4 mgs and Face Camo for Old Snake That could be a possibility hopfully its MGS5......

» Don't know about that, Fox's face is a different shape...
To be fair though, if it was Fox, it would be consistent with Ninja only having one eye (or appearing to, anyway) in the first MGS
I hope it's not Big Boss though, was kinda hoping for a post MGS4 story to evolve, but ah well..
