Dark_Alex must still be popping and sipping champagne, as he becomes the toast of the PSP scene with his latest offering, the 2.71 XMB Homebrew Launcher. In our humble opinion, we can all start dreaming of a future where all PSP firmwares have kernel mode homebrew launching direct from the XMB, because being able to launch homebrew from the Game Menu is just the dawning of a PSP Utopia.

Changelog:

Revision B (24 September)

  • Some kernel PRX's didn't load because the kernel tried to load them to user partition. This problem affected DevHook.prx and some other kernel prx's. This problem has been fixed.
Revision B with better binary loader in the tiff (25 September)
  • Changed the binary loader to use the one from tiffsdk 1.1 that has better stability. No changes on the core.
And in this Utopia there wouldn't be any copycats.

Here are some installation notes and reminders straight from Dark_Alex:

Update Instruction for people with revision A installed:

To update from HEN revision A to B, hard reset your psp (to make sure that hen is not running). Then copy the new files to the memory stick and run the tif. The new files will be automatically updated.

People without any version of hen installed, just follow the instructions below:

- Copy all contents inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.
- Go to the PHOTO viewer of the XMB and enter in the folder "HENB".
- If the psp just freeze, reboot your psp and try again. Currently the tiff is very unstable and it is only executed sometimes. I'll try to improve that in the future.

- The first time you run the program, you will see quickly a blue screen, and after that a screen that can be of two colors:

  * Red: the files couldn't be written to the flash (it ha pens a few times). Just keep trying.
  * Green: The files were written successfully. After that, the xmb will be rebooted. Now you can run the homebrew in format prepared for 2.71. (see details below).

- As mentioned before, the patch will remain resident in memory, and even entering sleep mode won't delete it. Only a hardware reset will remove the program from memory.

- When you do a hardware reset, you'll have to run the tiff again. This time there won't be green or red screen, just a blue screen and xmb reboot, since this time there is no need to write to the flash.

Note: the files pspbtknf.txt, pspbtknf_game.txt, pspbtknf_updater, and systemctrl.prx in the root of the memory stick are only needed the first time the program is executed. After that you can delete those. However, don't delete patch.bin, h.bin and the folder with the tiff, since you will need those the next time you do a hard reset and want to run the program again.

Note2: Once the program is loaded, it is independent of the memory stick contents. So you can freely swap memory sticks.

 » Answer and Question

@3 - As far as I know anyways, this still should require specially made homebrew, BUT with the DevHook loader that's ported (check Dark_AleX's page) you can emulate v.1.50 from 2.71, and run your homebrew through that.

My question: Remember one of the original 1.5-1.0 Downgraders required that you had to have a "Virgin" PSP, as in one without any downgrades, because the downgrades left files in the flash? These files that are written to the flash, will they impact downgrades/upgrades? Has anyone tested an upgrade after doing this? Any chance of an uninstaller that will remove those files to make sure we're not permanently screwing up our flash?
Good work Dark_AleX, thanks man, and keep it up!

 » WAIT!!!

If u have a 2.6 and want to upgrade it.... WAIT... because many of the homebrew apps doesn't run in the eloader.99 tiff exploit. On the other hand you can play isos but by the moment say goodbye to the homebrew!!!

Anyway.. if you don't have the GTA UMD you still can't run everything from the tiff eloader so... GO AHEAD... I'll wait by the moment in my 2.6 running the current homebrew and see what happend next until the 2.71 tiff exploit works better.

you can launch ISOs from this menu, without having to downgrade to 1.5

 » 1.5 for life

Would kernal access allow us to run Devhook and other homebrew from the Games directory like we do for 1.5 now? Only then would I upgrade.

 » Upgrade if you want...

Even this news isn't enough to get me away from my 1.5 factory firmware. As long as there is devhook, I won't be upgrading mine....not ever!

How good is the new Hen rev.B with better loading?? What's the success rate on that?? I'm at work and couldn't test out.
Also, does "Homebrew Enabler version for Devhook" at Dark_AleX's site means launching dh straight from the Photo Menu??

 » Load homebrew

For those who doesn't know yet, there are two ways ths works.

1. One of those is (before you load the HENB2) loading the "Devhook 4.X" selecting the umd/iso option with "firmware 1.5" selection.

This one enables an 1.5 environment over wich you could load homebrew from the "game menu" as if where kxploited (you don't need to kxploit it) just coping the app to the game folder of your memstick.

2. The other is (after loading the iso with the firmware 1.5 option) loading the "Devhook 4.6" selecting the umd/iso option with the iso game you want to play, this time select firmware 2.71 (you will need the 2.71 dump in the dh/2.71 folder).

And voala!!! this loads the iso over a 2.71 emulated on a 1.5 wich emulates over 2.71 again.

The dump is in the 2.71 folder in the installer of the Devhook 4.6 (you need to search this download by your own)

The HENB 2 is better because it has no problems to load.

 » spell it out

hey... so i've been lurking on this site for a couple months now but have not ever really joined in on the homebrew fun. So, my question is what exactly does this do? If I wanted to run a NES emulator (for instance) where would I go from here? (I'm 2.71 with TA-082... not my choice, it was a present). If I am asking a question that I could find the answer to elsewhere or if what I am looking for is in a tutorial somewhere then please direct me towards this. I know I'm not the only newbie with this question... I'm just the one biting the bullet to get made fun of. :) Plus, if I do get into homebrew I'd rather do it with a knowledge of what I'm getting into and what will most likely keep me safe from bricking my psp.

I love the interaction on this page... and would love to finally have a better understanding of what "homebrew enablers", "devhook", etc. are. Thanks...

 » Full instructions?

Can anybody, somebody please state all the steps to this? I've been putting the MS_ROOT file randomly in different folders, looked at several photo folders dozens of times, still nothing.

My intelligence towards PSP is rather puny. But, im just wondering if somebody could explain how to install this.. I've also noticed you might need XMB? or Devhook to run this.. can anybody explain..

   by DieNoMight (Unregistered) - 2006-09-25
 » well...

At #20:
You can run ALL homebrew when emulating 1.5, so basically there is a reason for it. (From what I have read).

On the other hand, this does NOT run on my TA-82, 2.71. I always get the blue screen after running HenB, and instead of restarting the XMB, my psp just shuts off. I've seen this happen to some other TA-82 users, so it seems that there is not a 100% chance yet that this works with TA-82's :( Many people get it working though, I just seem to be in a minority of people who can't get the darn thing to reset to the XMB...
