PSP Slim Hack screen - Image 1In this particular news bit we'll be reporting details two topics you guys may be very familiar with: The PSP Slim, and developer Dark AleX.

The first news bit goes that coder Mathieulh (aka Math) has successfully dumped the Slim's 3.60 firmware. To prove this point, Math posted a screenshot taken of the Slim's kd folder in the flash0 directory. That would be the screenie displayed to your right. At the moment, Mathieulh won't divulge any details on how this procedure was pulled off - this exercise simply proves that hacking the Slim is possible.

What makes this news all the more exciting is that Mathieulh reports the dude who helped with the dump is none other than Dark AleX. Yes, dear readers - the famed CFW creator seems to have gone out of retirement (or is it now a sabbatical?) to take a crack at Sony's latest handheld offering. Then again, maybe that's just our wishful thinking.

Drop back again in case we pick up any details. Or, you can also opt to drop by Skyline34's thread over at the QJ.NET Forums, where we picked up this news snippet.

None of it will be released to to the public, so tis best not to give people that impression.

Really, says who?

Either way, congrats Mathieulh and DAX, impressive work!

first spam, woot! I beat the "I don't have time for an essay" guy. Ok, join www.c@shcrate.com/259295 (replace the @ with an A) to make enough money in less than 2 months for a slim psp. Woo hoo!

   Re: StoneCut (Unregistered) - 2007-09-06
 » Dark_AleX

Well, Dark_AleX is still in retirement technically

Also if any of the editors at QJ.net would have taken the time to read the Pandora announcement more carefully then they would have known that DA was also involved with that, plus some other very notable people like Nem, BOOSTER, Math plus the people everybody already knows (Noobz).

Anyway, great news I think. Hopefully the Slim gets hacked so I can buy one for my girl-friend :)

They did mention Dax and everyone you just mentioned. So if you had read the article talking about the Pandora battery, you would have seen that.

Yes, but the author of this article apparently didn't read that.

Anyway, the article is changed now.

the slim has no irda port.

Irda.prx is probably there because the new firmware still need to support all the old psp:s and they sure have ir-ports on them. :)

» More magic from the Magic Men

There are probably some sad faces over at Sony HQ but everyone here is smiling. This is good news for people that are curious about buying the slim, but wouldn't because of no homebrew support. People like me. Maybe you too.

The fact that Dark_Alex and Math are 'brainstorming' the slim is good news for us, not so good for Sony.

Now I can consider buying one.

Thanks a ton D_A and Math.

 » Remember

As Math said in another forum

BTW Alex and I have been toying with the slim but Alex is still retired to the psp scene, hence we do not plan any public release of this work, it was done for private purposes just to see if we could do it, it was not planned to be disclosed or released in any ways. Although now people know that messing arround with the psp slim is possible.
I hope that hacking groups will realise how we did it ( it wasn't that hard ) and will release their own software or hacks for the psp slim.
So far no public release either from me or Alex is planned. Alex is retired of the scene and does not plan on making any of his work public.

Don't trust any kid that mails you and says " Oh yeah baby I am so cool me and my friend DarK AleX we managed to dump the new PSP Slim we're so cool!!!". If you've payed attention on the picture that you share us one .prx file is named "irda.prx" and the new PSP Slime dosen't have a IR port!! It's fake! Why to put a Irda prx on a psp slim?? Useless. Did you ever think that 3.60 might have been made for the normal psp too?

And maybe they havn't got round to releasing it yet, or decided not to do it or something.

This is no proof it's fake, and it's no proof it's real either.

 » Wow, what the *****.

What the hell kind of arrogant ***** is this? "HAY LOOK WE CRACKED THE NEW PSP BUT WE WON'T TELL YOU HOW LOL!!!!!!!!!!!11111!1!"

If Dark_Alex was retired, then he should stay retired, and keep his "private" works actually private. This news does us absolutely no good, because he doesn't tell us a damn thing about HOW it's hackable. I mean, no ***** it's hackable - ANYTHING is hackable - but these two are basically just putting the fact in our faces that they know how to hack the slim, and we don't. It's absolutely childish, and they may as well have not even TOLD anyone that they hacked anything.

Call me unappreciative or whatever, but this is just ridiculous. There's no point in hacking the new PSP if you're going to hoard all the info on doing so to yourself. That just utterly defeats the purpose.

   Re: Varnil (Unregistered) - 2007-09-06
» Interesting yet not a reason to get your hopes up

First of as a coder myself i can tell you how possessive and proud some people can be with their work. There's nothing wrong with that, in fact it should be respected. For the rest of you ******* who want to b**ch about this maybe if you had been a bit more supportive you'd understand but now you should be grateful for any sort of release and if you're not then go crawl under a rock because odds are without this there won't be another exploit for a loong time.

Anyways, aside from that, personally i wouldn't get my hopes up for another exploit. Also regarding the save state buffer overload, it's highly unlikely that it is even possible on a psp because simply modifying the hardware a little would enable sony to add a switch that can block write access to the nand in game... Furthermore, i believe one of two things hapened: either a new service mode hack or my more far fetched idea is physically removing the memmory chips off the psp 2000 motherboard, hooking them up to the original psp and then running a 1.5 nand dump off of the mem card (using pandora) accessing the flash through the 1.5 kernel in a standard eboot (of course a driver change might be neccessary for the new hardware to be readable) such as booster's usbsss

   Re: WarLord - 2007-09-06
 » "Oh yeah??" is right...

It would be pretty dumb to announce their procedure to dumping 3.60 when the PSP slim hasn't even been released everywhere yet. Sony could easily pull back shipments and bring out patched portables.
   by bc (Unregistered) - 2007-09-06
 » ok...

But this does not mean that the PSP Slim is hackable, only the firmware was. I don't think this is relevant to PSP Slim just yet.

 » mhmm...

It was only a matter of time. Don't you all get it? Dark_AleX spent so much time in the homebrew community that he became attached to it. He's like a homebrew smoker. He said he had quit. Then, 3 months later, he takes a puff, just to have the feeling of joy he gets by releasing something. Soon, it will be a public release. Then incrimentaly larger releases, each one larger than the last. He can't stop, not till the day the scene dies. Eventually, he will give in, admit defeat, and rejoin the scene to open arms.

by Dookie Water (Unregistered) - 2007-09-06
 » DUH

I'm willing to bet that the 3.6 is going to be for both psp's hence the ir prx. And wouldnt it be a good idea for them to wait for a while after the slims are being sold to release how they were able to decrypt the firmware so sony cant try to do any last minute changes to the firmware?

by Great News (Unregistered) - 2007-09-06
» Homebrew is just around the corner

A dumped PSP Slim means many things (i believe). The Pandora Battery did not work on the PSP Slim. This is probably because Sony changed the flash location, and the IPL settings. Since the new PSP runs on a new motherboard, coder have to figure out the new code that allows you to get into service mode, so you would most likely need a PSP Slim IPL. Once the Pandora Battery is proven to run on the PSP Slim with its modifications, then all that needs to be done is a firmware hack which allows you to run homebrew.

When i read that, i couldn't help but smile. Dark_AleX is a psp HBscene legend. If he hops on board with hacking the PSP Slim, it will definiatley happen. It's wise that they are waiting to release this (if they even will) because we all know sony would do some gay ass patch and ruin it for all the rest of us that want a hacked US psp slim.
