Immersion logo - Image 1 Immersion, known for rumble technology, went in-depth about business strategies, but our eyebrows were raised when the company brought up a promising concept. Immersion is not only working with Nokia, Samsung, and LG to bring the VibeTonz technology to mobile phones and PDAs, but is also considering to bring handheld gaming devices some rumble love.

Immersion CEO Victor Viegas told Game Daily in a lengthy interview:

The effects and strength you can get with a small motor is really amazing... you really feel the staccato of a machine gun, you really feel when you're pressing on a piece of glass on a touch screen that you're pressing a low profile button... This would translate quite easily to the Nintendo DS, PSP or almost any mobile device.

Sony has signed a deal with Immersion before, with Viegas promising technical proposals for PlayStation products, so it's likely to see Sony PSP with rumble. Nintendo, on the other hand, always used its own ideas like the Wii Remote's rumble function.

"We have not yet formally taken a position on whether it's infringing or not infringing any of our IP," said Viegas. About future plans, he continued, "We've made it clear that we want to work with them as close as possible and we've shown them quite a few new technologies that we think make their products a little bit better."

 » DS already has rumble...

but I'd love to see the PSP with rumble as well. I'd have to be plugged into the USB though I'd imagine.

Are we completely forgetting the fact that the DS already has a rumble pack?

dont push your luck immersion.
rumble is HAZARDOUS to handhelds?
specially to PSP!
it can also damage UMD and the UMD lens drive mechanism.
i bet you havent seen a dual shock controller left on a table while playing rumble intensive games, it goes crashing on the floor. imagine that with your handheld.
this news just proves your company is nothing but a money hungry one.
and the DS has rumble on specific games.

i doubt the rumble would be that strong maybe just strong enough to make you feel immersed into the game. BTW has anyone here used a cell phone? they are small and have had rumble for years..........

So did Immersion invent a motor with offset weight to create vibration? They should sue Nintendo anyway, it would be funny.

I don't want rumble on my PSP. I have the rumble pack on my DS lite and I don't even use it because it sticks out.

 » WTF?!

That's stupid. That's really stupid. I think Immersion just doesn't get that having even he slightest rumble on PSP will break its inner stuff.

 » Eh...

Well duh! Of course they can, at least the PSP can. But it might severely reduce the battery life, unless it uses its own power source or batteries. It can also damage the hardware. The handheld device is not made more that stuff.

Immersion is getting greedy.... or greediER I might say.
