PSP retail box - Image 1With the announcement of the redesigned PlayStation Portable, a lot of people have been poring over whatever information is readily available about it.

Apparently, one of these people is 0okm. The homebrew expert has posted a few observations about the new PSP on his blog, and we thought it might make for some interesting reading for those who want to know more about it.

One of the more interesting things about the redesigned PSP is that its main memory has been boosted up to 64 MB. The old PSP-1000's main memory is at 32 MB.

Another thing is that the redesigned PSP can get about 3 to 6 hours of juice from a 1200 mAh battery. It's roughly the same output as that of a PSP-1000 but the PSP-1000 uses 1800 mAh batteries.

Here's a short list of the other things 0okm has discovered about the new PSP-200x:

 » Extra memory eh?

Homebrew on it is only a matter of time, and Daedalus could certainly use that extra memory.

 » cr4p

new PSP sounds rubbish anyway, homebrew harder with the motherboard, plus the tv out output is cr4p... I dont see the point apart from Sony copyinng the DS !

   Re: Benji (Unregistered) - 2007-07-15
 » ?

Of course homebrew is going to be harder, but it definitely isn't rubbish. TV output definitely isn't "cr4p" and I don't see where they've copied the DS. Also, it has 64MB of RAM, which is awesome when they do get homebrew going.

That'll require a 3.6 downgrader. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

 » asd

well it will require a exploit...even if theres not much in the firmware, hopefully there will be a game that can downgrade. w/e... but didnt we already knew all of this besides the mobo number n trhe remote thing. n does it really matter?

are you guys *****ting me?

how everyone is falling for 64M as great? Shii.eeat! My Desktop computer got 4Gb RAM. This is retarded they could've put at least 1Gb DDR3 since it doesn't suck much voltage.

let me know when $$ony stops making yesterday technology...

Your desktop computer is also roughly 100 times the size of the PSP, dumbass.

rubbish, theboost and any other prick that open its mouth just to flame or say dumb things: get a life.

Anyway, 64M are good, though it will complicate a bit the life of developers, having to still compatibilize things with the 32M versions.

   Re: Advertising -

   Re: meh (Unregistered) - 2007-07-16
 » @ theboost

Maybe cuz they don't need that much memory. Original psp had 32mb, and it was enough to run games fairly smoothly. There's no point in putting in 1gb of ram, the cpu/gpu will just bottleneck it.

But yea, it would be nice to have more. 64mb is plenty for the psp

the screen is on the front
it uses a battery
it can be held in your hands
it has buttons on it

stay tuned for more fascinating bits of information coming soon...

I dont know if youve noticed, but there are more astonishing features too.

Serial number has been changed.
Backlight, with adjustable brightness levels.
supports UMDs (Now Single Layered!)
Green Power light indicator
Playstation logo now moved 1mm to the right
can play mp3s
can view jpegs.

   Re: X (Unregistered) - 2007-07-16
 » Even more features

After months of research with my friends dumb ass and kuribos, I too have made some groundbreaking discoveries:

It comes in a box, not a paper bag

Hobos will probably not be able to afford it

If you throw it on the ground, it may or may not break depending on the surface and the force of the throw.

PSP stands for Playstation Portable

This last one is unconfirmed, but it may be able to connect to the internet.

 » What about games?

Why add more RAM if you're planning on keeping the old PSP around, and keeping the games compatible for both? Why is there still no second analog nub?

Sony is going downhill, and fast.

   Re: well (Unregistered) - 2007-07-15
 » why you ask?

Because a second analog WOULD make the original PSP design irrelevant.

Because more RAM + faster loading times on this updated model.

And for the record the original model will probably be discontinued. (60Gig PS3)

You answered your own question, doofus. Since they're planning on keeping the old one, a new analog wouldn't be sensible now would it?

hope the new batteries won't heat up and explode... lol... are the new batteries redesigned such that the old psp batteries won't fit on the new battery compartment... if so, that's just crap... it would be nice to slap the extra 2200mAh batteries on to it for extra power... :D

   Re: Cyberblade (Unregistered) - 2007-07-15

Even if you do buy a rubber analog nub cover, it doesn't change that it's still in a horrible location. Should be above the dpad rather then below it. Its current location cramps my hands after using it for any amount of time.

64mb ram? thats strange because if a new game comes out

im pretty sure no game will jsut be 64 mb compatible. They will probably be built around the 32 mb version with a few addes stuff to take usage of the 64 mb if you have it.

The Screen on the Japanese PSP's were supposedly brighter and did'nt suffer from the latency and ghosting. Will the New PSP's have these screens, or the old crappy one's the American PSP's had?

by psp gamer (Unregistered) - 2007-07-16
 » Memory management

I'm sure game developers just keep coding games as they always have, i'd say the memory new management code would be in the firmware not necessarily in the game. So older games would get a boost as well.

   by Dratsabu (Unregistered) - 2007-07-16
 » My thoughts

Thanks for the information, it seems interesting. As I like the idea of Games from the PSP on the big screen. And yet, I'm a bit worried since it comes with a new PCB, I'm concerned, I know for a fact that Sony is going to release a brand new firmware for this new model, and since it does come with 64mb main, I assume that the firmware package is going to be a little different from each other. Which could mean, that this new one can't be software hacked. And seeing how the inside is, I'm assuming that its going to be hard for a modchip to squeeze in such a tight space. Well, I shouldn't be talking about it like this already, we'll have to see in September.

 » i dont get it

i dont get wat the big deal about adding another analog stick is. yea ppl say that it wont be relevent to the first generation psp design and all but did sony not put a tv output for the new psp. how are we firgeneration sp users gonna do this?? yea its embedded in the firmware 3.60 and all but u also need the plug to put it on the tv how are we gonna attach the plug on the old psp. so in other words if they made that feature for hte new psp then they shudda made a second analog stick. honestly i dotn think it wud make the old design irrelevent cause it just helps alot more in fps games. owell

   by Hellraiser (Unregistered) - 2007-07-16
 » why?

Why didn't they originally have 64mb RAM?
Weren't they supposed to have TV out to begin with?
They could at least add another analog stick.

Why buy a new PSP unless homebrew is confirmed to work? That's why there's a new version, sony wants you to forget homebrew!

sometimes these corperations must test there markets product(s) to stay in competition with others and in the proccess they release their product(s) too early and not fully developed.

Anyways, imagine being able to crack the fw and playing n64 at full speed, sms/ gamegear, and capcom 3, on your tv w/ the psp. (wow)

the development kit psp's also have 64 megs of ram they called DEM-100 and they're given to game developers to test the engine and the game code. DEM-100 has a tv out too.
