UMDLet's face it. The UMD is not really a very popular medium for people. It's struggling to make a profit, you could say, as its limited uses and high prices push consumers away from making purchases.

In Japan, however, the poor unloved UMD had Christmas early, as people actually started to buy universal media discs. After Warner Home Video opted to reduce prices for their UMD movies, sales of the discs went up tenfold! The UMD vids, which are now priced at 980 yen (around  $8.50) were only supposed to be marked down as part of a limited time sale. Warner decided to just keep the price down permanently.

It's a smart move to make it limited then permanent. People will think that this markdown is a godsend (or santasend) and buy more discs to suit their movie tastes because the high prices from before are still fresh in their mind. We wish they'd send that discount to other countries because the darned things, while cute, cost more than the usual Christmas gifts you buy for to family members you don't like and can barely tolerate (admit it, because it's bound to be true).

One last thing: Don't you think it's weird that they didn't offer numbers? There's this mental image of them selling only one a month with the old prices, so they still only sell 10 UMDs now... If any of you have actual numbers for the UMD sales, send us a tip, ok?

 » Stupid question

Stupid question but therefore quick:

Does DevHook support playing back Video UMDs that require firmware updates?

If not, they can keep them, regardless of price.

Very good move.
(Runs off to buy UMD's)

 » Yes, DevHook does Movies

#5 - it sure does. I had Advent Children on UMD for months just waiting for something like Devhook (2.6 emulation) to come along. Now I can actually watch the movie I paid for. ;)

The thing is, when facing the decision between a DVD and UMD, most would opt to go with the DVD. DVDs can be played on a larger screen, passed along to friends, have more features, and can be ripped to be turned into an mp4 to watch on the PSP. UMDs can only be played on a PSP, only lent to friends with a PSP, and don't have as many featured inside.

At $10, they seem to be a more attractive choice because they aren't as expensive as DVDs.

Is $20 a lot? Well, not really. Are they too much for UMD movies? Definitely.

a umd burner woud be great... then you'll put your isos there and various multimedia, and devhook.. but then again...it wont happen..coz' Sony sux! eventhough they have already been owned!

If I were able to get UMDs at that pricing, I'm sure I'd buy constantly. I spend way too much time staring at my PSP, and watching a movie would be cool. I only have my Spider-man 2 movie, and I love it (have it both in UMD and DVD).

I do complain about the regular pricing because here I have to pay about 40 bucks, which really sucks.
Too bad I can't get the Japanese music UMDs I've been searching for though.

» I have said to do this for months

UMDs would sell well if they were considerably cheaper than DvDs. It is common sense and I don't know why they didn't think about that initially.

 » lower the prices worldwide

If prices of UMDs worldwide were under the $8 / £5 mark then Im sure psp owners would take up the offer and start building a small UMD collection. The current prices are just plain silly. Why should I buy the umd for £18 when I can get it on dvd and watch it on my widescreen for £5??

DUH!!!

 » Yes, Do It!

I live in the U.S. and hope they do lower the UMD movies here too. I would pick up some of the ones I enjoy most. Not all though. Why would I want to pay again for something I already have? The good thing is you don't have to free up card space. I guess it would be easier to carry an extra card if need be with all my favorites on it, but quality would not be as good unless I wanted to put only 1 or 2 on it. Quality is surely noticed between a 1.8gig UMD movie and a hundreds of MB movie. I like lots of choices though.

by are they worht it?? (Unregistered) - 2006-09-06

hmm, well they sure are more portable than dvd's, you can put them in your pocket without scrathing the actual cd, also if the ps used dvd's, i also think it would have become WAY WAY WAY less portable, and sony probably would have thought to bad other things if it played dvd's, like tv out, and other stuff, so i think its not bad especially after price drops

» they had to sell em off

cheap as chips... they had to find some way to off load the stockpiles of UMDs... I think they did at one point consider putting them in the same hole Atari used...
