Japan: PSP still on top, sold more than Wii for the year so far - Image 1

Japan's been opening its arms to the PSP for the last few weeks. Thanks to continuously strong sales of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, the PSP is still maintaining its lead on the other hardware platforms for the week ending on May 4.

Seeing as how strong the PSP's been lately, some might also get a hoot out of these sales figures: So far this year, the PSP has sold more than Nintendo's mainstay, the Wii, selling 1.6 million units since January. The Wii sold about 1.3 million.

Monster Hunter is still going strong in second place in Japan's software charts, but how long will its sales continue to pull along PSP sales? One can only wonder. Here's the hardware sales chart in Japan for the week of May 4:
  1. Sony PSP: 100,870
  2. Nintendo Wii: 71,518
  3. Nintendo DS: 52,542
  4. PlayStation 3: 10,177
  5. PlayStation 2: 8,802
  6. Xbox 360: 1,725
