You don't know it yet, but you have a GPS device in your possession right now - your PSP. Deniska's entry to the Neo Flash Summer Coding Contest for PSP Applications called Map This! turns your PSP into a map viewer in a snap. So why buy those GPS systems that would cost you an arm and a limb when you can just download this application and follow the very simple instructions?

This is not the first time that we've featured Map This! on QJ, matter of fact, it was still a very buggy version when we covered it. However this new release has tons of features we're sure you will enjoy. But, word of advice, this software is distributed under GPL license and provided for education purposes only. It is not fully tested and therefore should be used with caution. Deniska or QJ will not be responsible for any damages and/or legal problems which may arise from using this application & underlying hardware setup. This software acquires image data from Google Maps online service. Please read and understand Google Maps' "Terms of Use" agreement before using this application.

Now let's get down to business.

Main Features:
  • Scroll through large (up to 65536x65536 pixels) maps.
  • Zoom in/out. The number of zoom levels depends of on the size of the map.
  • Large coverage. The program uses imagery from Google Maps, which currently have pretty good coverage of North America, Western Europe, Australia, Japan. Visit Google maps, to find out if they provide required coverage for your location.
  • Customizable map size, level of detail and coverage.
  • Ability to display zipped maps (currently buggy)
  • Ability to display satellite and hybrid maps from Google.
  • WIFI map retrieval: ability to acquire and store map data to memory stick over WIFI
  • Linux/Cygwin script is also provided to generate a map of given size and detail for a given location.
  • GPS support: ability to read and interpret NMEA sentences from a GPS receiver communicating through PSP's serial port.
GPS Mode features:
  • Speed, direction, altitude, latitude, longitude, number of satellites in view.
  • NORTH UP mode: map is displayed with NORTH always on top. The arrow in the middle turns to shows current direction.
  • TRACK UP mode: map rotates so that direction of movement is always from top down.
  • Record GPS data (captures NMEA sentences in gps.txt file for later replay)
  • POI/Attractions data support. Ability to select and display different types of attractions.
  • PSPSDK compatible source code provided.

The article is a bit misleading. People may think that all you need is this software and you're set. I can't believe this to be true.

You can see the U.S. but the zoom level is far out and why for the long comment

   by LinuxPS2 (Unregistered) - 2006-08-17

all you need is a GPS that has NMEA capablities (pretty much all) and there are guides on how to connect it to the psp via that serial port

 » nice job

wow this is a good app... i remember seeing it a long time ago but it was not as good as it is now... will be buying a gps reciver of ebay now... they run at like 30 bucks i think

   by gamer (Unregistered) - 2006-08-17
 » oh yeah...

like everyone's that smart to do it or can find one of those guides you speak of... and no... google don't work that well at all... most time you search for sites it comes up with dumbasses sites that have nothing but useless crap and commertials cuz they want make money by having #1 hit on google... losers make internet full of crap! and most stuff you get from the internet could be fake, and yeah, how many books you know of tells you how to connect a GPS to your PSP?

I kinda see where this is going, one of those things I saw before:" how to use verizon's service without paying using a scanner and a phone and ............." and it states, is for educational purpuses only.

If anyone could make a software that enables the PSP to become a GPS receiver it'd be cool...

Anyways, very nice job on completing this, atleast now we have an option to use psp as gps now.

Once again, a lame attempt for the shadow government to track us-even through means of a portable game device. If you want to be tracked from any sattelite or reciever, be my guest. If you have pirated software on your psp, i strongly suggest NOT using this. Dont turn your psp into a tracker station portable.OH,but its all fun and games right? Our government loves us and would never tell us a lie. They dont tap our phones ever and certainly cant track us through gps. How do you think you get the map feeds??

Thank you #28... I hope it works out for ya..
#22, they can't track you if you use just a gps RECEIVER ;-), but I would defenetly dump a cell phone if I was that paranoid...
#26, read the README file...
#25 - you can make that map your self - just read the README

 » Hi Deniska! I have a question??

First of all, this is an awesome piece of software. Very professionally done and super easy! And it's free ;)

Thanks Deniska!!

Anyway, what GPS reciever do you recommend? I am sure you must have used it with a particular type or brand according to your preferences. If it makes a difference I am located in Massachusetts.

Thanks once again! :)
