Making its debut in March 2005 in North America and in September 2005 in PAL territories, the Sony Playstation Portable marked its third year by letting us know about plans for Remote Play. And it seems that the PSP won't be stopping anytime soon with just the recent features and services it currently offers. Sony's senior marketing manager John Koller revealed in an interview with IGN that the Sony PSP is here to stay for a decade: We've talked about the PSP being a 10 year product, but a 10 year product in the continued... how can I put this... in the continued lifecycle, so we obviously had the 1000, we have the 2000, so the PSP as it was first launched in March 2005 isn't going to the be the PSP that it ends up as in 10 years, but it will still be a very strong portable gaming device that is centered in gaming and has a lot of multi-functional features. Other plans for Sony's PlayStation Portable were also discussed in the interview. Koller mentioned that the PSP is currently enjoying an 85% boost in North American sales thanks to the April 2007 price drop and the different bundles, and with this success in mind, Sony has plans for creating more bundles as the company's main strategy to hook more gamers. In fact, the PSP Entertainment Pack will be a central cog in this campaign. Koller also confirmed that Sony is still a strong supporter of the fading UMD technology. However, not many studios are supporting UMD so they are more sensitive to the content and price needs of its demographic. Some very interesting ideas were also thrown to Koller throughout the interview such Home coming to the PSP and having a PSP-specific store. Koller said these are clear possibilities being explored, but nothing definite is planned yet. For the rest of the interview, click on the via link below. |

» 10 years? you gotta be kidding me
No console/handheld lasted actively for 10 full years of lifespan not even Atari, TI stuffs (early 80's), NES (mid 80's to 90-ish), SNES (early 90 ish), PS1 (mid to end of 90's), PS2 (2000 to mid 2k) etc (ok may be PS2 is the closest but to most it is consider not active since PS3 launched) Even all mighty Gameboy had to go thru 4 transformations to last all that time. I'll be surprised if PSP2 or something similar is not out by 2010. We probably see a next gen of NDS by then.
You are telling me PSP has a hope to still be around 2015 as the active SONY hand held game unit????????

» Well...
They've already stated that the PSP has gone through revisions - 1000 to 2000, which has seen a design change and some additional functionality. I think when they talk about PSP they really mean the brand, but with some backward compatibility. Like the way you can put Gameboy Advance carts into a DS now.
The PSP is the only handheld with removable storage after all, so if they decide to dump UMD and go with downloadable products, it's an option. The PSP is easily the most impressive handheld unit technically - I'd say that whilst the DS is an excellent portable games machine, the PSP is the only portable console. It's a small change of emphasis that makes all the difference.

Yeah, I agree with Acteon.
While the PSP2 or a PSP phone will be out in the next years, the first PSP will be still supported, whether with BC or like the PS2.
My wishes for the PSP would be BC; phone functions(and not over WLAN, I want the real phone net!); Bluetooth; Built-in cam with flash; Two analog nubs; and built-in keyboard.
I know, that's a lot of wishes, but I think Sony would be able to do that. I even have some design ideas for such a PSPhone. And with all that functions, even a price around 300 $ or higher would be okay, I think.

» lavino, are you dense?
10 years simply means that they're planning to be in production of the PSP, in whatever form it changes to during that time, for that duration. Every Sony console has or will have at least a 10 year run. He's just reaffirming what we already know. Sony's long talked about their 10 year plans as far back as the launch of the PS2.
He didn't say new software releases for it would be prevalent that whole time, but that doesn't mean that the hardware is unsupported, as you claim. The back catalog doesn't suddenly cease to exist when the new model comes out. PS1 was on the market for 11 years. If PS2 sales remain strong, they may consider extending the lifecycle of that machine, as well. Even after their successors were released, the older consoles were/are still enjoying rather brisk sales despite the drastic slowdown in software releases.
That said, I do remember a Sony exec saying one time that the PSP will likely follow a slightly different plan. Unlike it's home console brethren, they said they didn't have plans (this was at least a year ago, maybe more, so this may have changed), for a two-console approach with the PSP. They said to expect the PSP to evolve in a similar vein to the iPod. New models periodically come out, but except for iPod Touch, there's really no drastic changes made. It's just evolutionary steps. Bigger screen. More capacity. Video support. Coverflow. Etc. All the while, the basic functionality has remained the same. It's simply had a few tweaks. PSP will go, and to some extent has already gone, through similar growing pains before a true successor comes out. This is all they're saying and it's not an unreasonable expectation.
We're 3 years in now and sales are picking up and are stronger than ever. Occasionally even outpacing all other consoles, handheld or home. This thing has been building up steam quietly over the last year or so and there's little indication that it will slow down soon.

» THis seems to be a real option, they just can't trow the PSP away, Unless...
Another, better Portable, Handheld machine Come's to the Market and Suprass all the PSP functionalities, like The PSP did with the N- Gage and DS, and they still in th works downthere Underground (europe, well N-Gage)
Also , ppl cant expect the DS beat the PSP, just for Playing DS roms free with a Free Cardtrige and play GBA Cardtrige...
Also It can Low level Homebrews and Snes, GBA roms with respected Emulators.
But all this The PSP do it and Better, Well doesn't run DS-rom games, But DS doesn't Run ISO(UMD)
At least The PSP tried to make and NDS-like emulator...
Effort what it counts!! n_n!
SO we cant Expect a NDS run PSX Roms neater...
So if the PSP goes down, the DS goes down first, If we talk in Functions of the Machine, But NDS have Much fun low level Graphics Games and PSP have FUN- High-Level Graphics

See PSP have the improve Graphics PS2 like very similar to PSX, but much improve.
See NDS have Moderate Graphics GBA like Very similar to the GBA
So PSP is the winer here, it Runs Nintendo consoles, Arcade,is a Multi-Platform Portable Device.
It does almost what a PC does, messenger, Calling, Camera, Music, Videos and etc!!
So theres no way a PSP goes down unless another Better machine goes out by any of the Competitors-companies, Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.
Probably that New Machine can be made by Sony, once ain Ruler off the Portables.
If they do a PSPhone with PSP functionalities it would be great. Standard PSP and Slim&lite PSP will be also be on running too, Well not everybody will afford the PSphone and also I don't hink a Father or a Mother will let their 8 to 13 years son have a PSphone so early age!
SO theres PSP space to entertain Childs and Pre-Teenagers, also people that Just want to play and thats it.
Well Still this PSPhone can have more security and another Flash memory wich it can be Un-asscecible like The Cellphones have. Well u have to be a Hard-mod-Hacker to access.
So it should be so Multi-Platform like Standard PSP and Lite .
PSP standard, I especially hacks them With respected Tools make by Coders, I price very cheap 10 bucks, well is cheaper than all those Games u have to buy and all those spammers that they do it for 100 bucks.
Thos edoesn't have too much clients, I hack ones and then the voice runs to other PSP oner or a father who has a little kid who wants to play games but his father can afford learning this hack stuff and neither buy the Expensive games, Well I come hack cheap ten and put Nintendo Games, thats what Kid liked, He ended So happy and his Father too and his sister who has a DS with few DS nintendo games and DS waned to play with the PSP.
What are the odss rigth!n_n'!
PSP is happiness!
If u know how to find it.
No limitations for it, Always A new thing to make for PSP
Homebrews, UMD Games, Functions and stuff.
We can call this 10 year Project a REally good deal and posibility for PSP existence on the Universe!
Also if nother New PSP is out theres same like PSphone, more security too expensive, same thing like PSP Standard , Just few new things.
PPL still be using Standar PSP and PSPlite.
Personally like my PSP standard, its my Favorite Gamming machine and Portable Device.
Im also going to study Computes Science, The langues of the Computers by making the logic use of the Math(algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus & etc) SO I want to create a Project of investigation when I go second year of Colleague I'm on 1st year, second semester. So PSP would be a great thing to start making Homebrews with the COmputer language I learn eventually. That will show The ppl that gave me the Resources(money for study) Know that Im using it for right.
Thanks everyone who read this!

» okay.....
Umm first off I would like to say that.... Sony wouldn't throw something away that they invested millions of dollars in just like that. Plus I would also say that the psp is a big hit in japan so it isnt likely to happen anytime soon. I even see people at school starting to come in with psps. It isnt cool to come to highschool with a ds or a gameboy, PSP is the fad for now. and who needs a psp phone? a cellphone is engineered for the jop and a psp is engineered for gaming and media quility's. also I would like to say how pointless your article is. First off it either just states the obvious or random notions and opinions you randomly came up.(no flaming just kinda felt akward when I came across a reply larger than the article.....)

» Huh? Wait...
"Koller mentioned that the PSP is currently enjoying an 85% boost in North American sales thanks to the April 2007 price drop and the different bundles"
How old is this review? CURRENTLY enjoing an 85% boost?? They dropped the Fat's price, and it is no longer sold anywhere... or is it?

A friend of mine hada very hard time finding a fat PSP in store, unless it was used. He checked Future Shop, Best Buy, EB games and tons of other stores but none had a fat PSP for sale. Luckily, he found a refurbished PSP at EB games after a few weeks of trying.
