Links2 Browser

Raf, creator of PSPRadio has released another update for his amazing Links2 browser port to the PSP. This latest version of Raf's port of Links2 (an open source browser for Linux) to the PSP i still based on links2.1-pre22, but has a whole host of new features  bundled with it. This version (r1214) is available as a standalone EBOOT or packaged as a PSPRadio plugin. Here's the changelog:

Uses links-2.1pre22 PSP r1214 ( 2006-07-08 )
  • Updates to pspgu driver:
    • Default resolution is now 960x544 (Its scaled down to the PSP's 480x272)
    • Links scaling is now disabled (as it used too much memory, and was one of the main culprits of memory errors)
    • Font size changed from 12 to 24, so it is readable without zoom (at 960x544)
    • Zoom (along with new virtual resolution of 960x544 implemented using a kind of double buffering)
  • New button mappings:
    • UP/DOWN = scroll up/scroll down (former R+UP/DOWN)
    • R+UP/DOWN = page up/page down
    • L (held) = zoom (while L is held). Use analog stick to move around.
    • L+CROSS = toggles zoom lock. (Once locked, the analog will control the mouse. Use L+analog to move zoom window).
This is the browser of choice for most PSP users as it has much more support than the Sony's PSP browser that was included with firmware 2.0 and above, so if you've just downgraded from 2.5/2.6, I suggest you get this to compensate for the loss of the later firmware's web browser. Download the standalone EBOOT if you wish to launch the Links2 browser from your PSPs XMB or the PSPRadio plugin if you wish to launch it from Raf's PSPRadio application.

yeah, standalone eboot is the wrong file, it goes to the right page but the download is the plugin.

 » Standalone is missing

no standalone = more memory usage --- we need the standalone version - please check your link - its pointing to the plugin version --- come one....get a move on !!! Thanks

 » Same as above

The stand alone link is actually the link to the psp radio plugin, any chance this could be fixed? Thanks

default font size is too small and unreadable!

 » Hm

I downloaded this...but is there a reason the text is SUPER small...i cant even read anything....too small

 » wow...

Normally I love these browser updates but woah! Everything is so its unreadable. The zoom idea prolly wasn't the best thing to do.

 » Sooooo small!

Mother of God, I'm really sorry to reiterate, but I can't read anything! Maybe if you could move the mouse when it was zoomed it wouldn't be so bad, but I think I'd rather just have a default font size of larger than 2. Great work on this stuff thus far though!

i just downloaded the release before this one...the font is much bigger in it

and Also...I'd take my Devhook 2.5 Web Browser over this one...anyday....this may be a bit faster...but its soo akward...and what speed advantage it has, it loses when you try to navigate a web page. which takes forever

 » u guys are lucky...

all of u are talking about font size and wrong file.

all i get is a red screen with a couple letters of text.

anyone know why this is happening?

i installed it all correctly and the streaming works, new db download works, the psptris game works(on exit all the text is scrambled), and changing to and from 3d works but links wont.

 » Weird glitch

Does anybody else get this kind of glitch where you get weird things left open? In the old versions the mouse pointer used to leave a trail every now and then but with this one it seems to be worse. I don't know if I explained that very well so I'll include a screenshot.

http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/5331/psplinks2screen0026lf.png

It's not that annoying because you can get rid of all the crap on screen by clicking on the web page a couple of times. But it's still alittle annoying....

   by Bryden - 2006-07-09
 » Not really

Actually in terms of graphical glitches it's fine for me, except for the whole text being insanely small. On the old one the mouse would clone itself whenever I entered the options buttons, but now it doesn't. Sometimes it gets stuck in the zoom thing but I can actually move the mouse, which is nice, though it's only happened once or twice.

 » fix menu font

edit the links.cfg in notepad and change the menu font size to 24

   by Andrew (Unregistered) - 2006-07-09
 » Text Size Problem

U can either edit the links.cfg , or click the upper grey bar, and go into its settings and change it there. Then click Save Settings....thats all. The text size is not a big problem, u can fix it urself.

 » Wow...

I'm sorry to say this, but this release is *****ed up... Nothing's readable, and just upping the menu size font does nothing to the webpage font size. It's just... uncomfortable to use. If I could make a recommendation, it would be to keep the original sizes of everything, but make a feature to zoom in and out of webpages using the analog stick (up and down) to regulate; then press L to break from the zoom. But that's just me rambling, hope Raf improves it for the next release.

 » MUCH BETTER

19, i get that too where the menus are left open, weird.

As for the new interface, I think it's much better than the old one. It gives me more room and I can zoom in to where ever I want. It's good being able to see the whole page at a glance. Prolly coz i have a 24" screen at home I'm so used to having all the room. I can also read most of the font too...

 » not so..

i prefer the previous release..not realli comfortable with tis update, so i switch back to the previous one..but credit to Raf for such a great job

 » Links blows.

Even before this release, Links2 was nowhere near as functional as the integrated PSP Browser.

SSL support? Hell no. That means no Myspace, Gmail, or anything else using a login / password really.

QJ should strive to be more accurate in their news reporting, because not every piece of homebrew is better than Sony's version of already implemented software.

Personally, I can't stand Links2, and those who tote it as better than the 2.0 browser are just people with chips on their shoulders, who would like to think that homebrew anything is better than something from Sony.

#27 - thanks for the accurate description, that's what I really wanted to know. QJ seems to overpromote everything!
