2.71 Kernel Access Tutorial!

Due to insistent demands from various people for a TA-082 2.71 Kernel Access tutorial, I decided I would go ahead and be the first one as I also posted the news about the exploit. Well, frankly this isn't hard at all and if you read the readme's then its super easy but for all of you who dont wanna waste their time reading through a very long text file, I thought I could smooth things out. Ok, so lets get to business.. things needed for the exploit are:

1. 2.71 Firmware Update, which you can download here.
2. Dark_AleX's HEN Revision B XMB Homebrew launcher, which you can get here.
3. 2.71 HEN compatible Devhook (posted below)

Ok, once you have everything downloaded on your PC, you need to update your PSP to firmware 2.71 if its not already updated.

1. Copy the UPDATE folder from the download below into your PSP/GAMES folder.

Now, start up the update on your PSP by navigating to the Memory card under right below where the UMD icon is with which you load up all your UMD's. NOTE: Before updating your PSP, be sure that the PSP battery is fully charged and that the AC Adapter is plugged in and so is the Memory card. After updating, you will want to load up HEN on your newly upgraded PSP and for that, read on:

- Copy all contents inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.
- Go to the PHOTO viewer of the XMB and enter in the folder "HEN".
- If the psp just froze, reboot your psp and try again. Currently the tiff is very unstable and it is only executed sometimes. I'll try to improve that in the future.
- The first time you run the program, you will see quickly a blue screen, and after that a screen
that can be of two colors:

* Red: the files couldn't be written to the flash (it happens a few times). Just keep trying.
* Green: The files were written successfully, after that, the xmb will be rebooted. Now you can run the homebrew in format prepared for 2.71. (see details below).

- As mentioned before, the patch will remain resident in memory, and even entering sleep mode won't delete it. Only a hardware reset will remove the program from memory.

- When you do a hardware reset, you'll have to run the tiff again. This time there won't be green or red screen, just a blue screen and xmb reboot, since this time there is no need to write to the flash.

Note: the files pspbtknf.txt, pspbtknf_game.txt, pspbtknf_updater, and systemctrl.prx in the root of the memory stick are only needed the first time the program is executed. After that you can delete those. However, don't delete patch.bin, h.bin and the folder with the tiff, since you will need those the next time you do a hard reset and want to run the program again.

Note2: Once the program is loaded, it is independant of the memory stick contents. So you can freely swap memory sticks.

Note3: To update from HEN revision A to B, hard reset your psp (to make sure that hen is not running). Then copy the new files to the memory stickand run the tif. The new files will be automatically updated.

After installing HEN Rev B, you will need to install Devhook to emulate firmware 1.50.

- You need Homebrew Enabler for 2.71 revision B (minimum) to run this port.
- Get the files to emulate firmwares yourself.
- Run the pbp with the title "Devhook 0.4X launcher for 2.71". The 1.50 launcher is also included because in the emulated 1.50 you can launch it.

Note: only 1.50 and 2.71 have been tested. When going from firmware 2.71 to 1.50, you will get the error "Couldn't start game". Don't worry, this is normal and it is done in purpose as a current temporal solution for reboot.bin parameters being different in both firmwares.

With all this done, just start up devhook from your 2.71 XMB and feel free to do anything you want with the emulated 1.50 firmware.

Note: Do not ask files for emulating 1.50 as i wont be able to help you with that. This article is not endorsed by Dark_AleX or Booster in any way and is posted as a tutorial to make things easier for people.

this is old, isnt it? you just run all the steps to run a 2.71 game of your memory stick, but you stop when you get 1.5... tisk tisk on this
its like someone painted the american flag, and then this person pointed out the stripes... very easy to spot if you wanted to run 1.5 homebrew

So, the patch for DEVHOOK 2.71 firmware that lets you load anything, does it work on this? If so, I'd never hard reset my psp again!

 » So wait.

If I DO already have 1.5, Then what program do I use to dump my firmware into files that DevHook can read?

After instaling the Hen B, can you then just copy your homebrew to your GAME folder

 » USE A CUSTOM BACKGROUND!!!

If you want the TIFF to be more stable, have a custom background on. With it, I've achieved 100% success rate.

 » WOW ISOS ON 2.71!

I can't believe this. I was moping around because I have a TA-082 and I'm starting to here all this crap about kernel things but never any talk about isos working. I'm interested in this, so I read up and think, "wow they have kernel working on 2.71!" So I upgrade my 2.60 to 2.71. Do the things they tell me to and ok great I have kernel. Now I get an idea, "omg do isos really work with this". I'm thinking like no way, if they were there would be a huge announcement, but I give it a try anyways. WOW is all I have to say. I now have a total of 10 games on my 4 gig stick that I got in late June. I appreciate all your hard work Dark_Alex and I will be sure to donate to you as soon as I find a link to your *real* site.

Yes, this really works. I'm using revision C on my TA-82 psp and can run 1.5 firmware perfectly! There is no reason to wait to use this, as it already works perfectly and you can upgrade to any further revisions without a problem. So if anyone is still using a TA-82 (2.50, 2.60, 2.70) psp, go ahead and upgrade! If a down grader comes out for TA-82s, I won't be using it, as there is no reason when you can load homebrew right from 2.71 ;)

How did u do it? what did u use to emulate UMDs?

   by Niklas (Unregistered) - 2006-10-02
 » k go do this

I know you guys might not like external links but there is a guy at psp-hacks (zephyr something) who made a package of downloads that has everything you need. It gives you the HEN Revision C (which is much more stable) and DevHook (which in this case I use to launch Isos).

Easy as Pie just copy and paste EVERY folder that the package has in it (almost all of which go in the root of the mem stick)

 » ISO

I'm playing ISO's now for a few days on my 2.71. Works great. The HEN B works 99% of the time. No use for HEN C. Only online play with ISO didn't work yet. I can get in the online section. But when the game starts it breaks the connection.

 » to Niklas and #24, #25..

Hey Niklas, that's me haha.. and yeah ugay, since you don't have a TA-082, just upgrade to 2.71 to downgrade. If you need help finding a full downgrade pack, I can provide you a link (from my own server, so pls don't abuse).. and Dutch Dude, HEN C is way better, supports homebrew even more and improved stabability. And yeah, as for infrastructure play on the ISO/CSO, they don't really work, yet.
