2.71 Kernel Access Tutorial!

Due to insistent demands from various people for a TA-082 2.71 Kernel Access tutorial, I decided I would go ahead and be the first one as I also posted the news about the exploit. Well, frankly this isn't hard at all and if you read the readme's then its super easy but for all of you who dont wanna waste their time reading through a very long text file, I thought I could smooth things out. Ok, so lets get to business.. things needed for the exploit are:

1. 2.71 Firmware Update, which you can download here.
2. Dark_AleX's HEN Revision B XMB Homebrew launcher, which you can get here.
3. 2.71 HEN compatible Devhook (posted below)

Ok, once you have everything downloaded on your PC, you need to update your PSP to firmware 2.71 if its not already updated.

1. Copy the UPDATE folder from the download below into your PSP/GAMES folder.

Now, start up the update on your PSP by navigating to the Memory card under right below where the UMD icon is with which you load up all your UMD's. NOTE: Before updating your PSP, be sure that the PSP battery is fully charged and that the AC Adapter is plugged in and so is the Memory card. After updating, you will want to load up HEN on your newly upgraded PSP and for that, read on:

- Copy all contents inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.
- Go to the PHOTO viewer of the XMB and enter in the folder "HEN".
- If the psp just froze, reboot your psp and try again. Currently the tiff is very unstable and it is only executed sometimes. I'll try to improve that in the future.
- The first time you run the program, you will see quickly a blue screen, and after that a screen
that can be of two colors:

* Red: the files couldn't be written to the flash (it happens a few times). Just keep trying.
* Green: The files were written successfully, after that, the xmb will be rebooted. Now you can run the homebrew in format prepared for 2.71. (see details below).

- As mentioned before, the patch will remain resident in memory, and even entering sleep mode won't delete it. Only a hardware reset will remove the program from memory.

- When you do a hardware reset, you'll have to run the tiff again. This time there won't be green or red screen, just a blue screen and xmb reboot, since this time there is no need to write to the flash.

Note: the files pspbtknf.txt, pspbtknf_game.txt, pspbtknf_updater, and systemctrl.prx in the root of the memory stick are only needed the first time the program is executed. After that you can delete those. However, don't delete patch.bin, h.bin and the folder with the tiff, since you will need those the next time you do a hard reset and want to run the program again.

Note2: Once the program is loaded, it is independant of the memory stick contents. So you can freely swap memory sticks.

Note3: To update from HEN revision A to B, hard reset your psp (to make sure that hen is not running). Then copy the new files to the memory stickand run the tif. The new files will be automatically updated.

After installing HEN Rev B, you will need to install Devhook to emulate firmware 1.50.

- You need Homebrew Enabler for 2.71 revision B (minimum) to run this port.
- Get the files to emulate firmwares yourself.
- Run the pbp with the title "Devhook 0.4X launcher for 2.71". The 1.50 launcher is also included because in the emulated 1.50 you can launch it.

Note: only 1.50 and 2.71 have been tested. When going from firmware 2.71 to 1.50, you will get the error "Couldn't start game". Don't worry, this is normal and it is done in purpose as a current temporal solution for reboot.bin parameters being different in both firmwares.

With all this done, just start up devhook from your 2.71 XMB and feel free to do anything you want with the emulated 1.50 firmware.

Note: Do not ask files for emulating 1.50 as i wont be able to help you with that. This article is not endorsed by Dark_AleX or Booster in any way and is posted as a tutorial to make things easier for people.

» Working, but need to reset hardware after every shutdown

I am now able to play iso games from my memory stick, but every time I have shut down my psp I need to run through all the steps from, hardware reset, "activate" hen C, run "Devhook 0.4X launcher for 2.71" and then start up Devhook.
Is this procedure normal?
Isn't it possible to just start Devhook and emulate the 1.5 even if the PSP have been shut down instead of going through all these steps?

 » Non-TA-082

Also if you are a nonTa-082 user and just dont want to downgrade your psp.(like Me) then this will work for you. it is accually easyer to run devhook on the 2.71 then it is on the 1.5.. I would suggest you download the Revision C since it is more stable then the Revision b. if you need to download this or the DEVHook for 2.71 you can get them on Dark_alex's website(recommended) http://www.dax.lan.st/ I would only download the Hacks from here on QJ or directly from DAX. Downloading a "pack" could have something in the files that could brick your psp. If you have any Questions just msn Me at hhcory@gmail.com. I Will help anyone who asks.

why does it hang when access henc folder and even if i can get into it, it cant load tif file, saying unsupported data.

 » to penol and damned

@penol: yeah, because it only makes a temporary patch to the 2.71 when you run HEN_C, therefore when you've shut down your PSP (a hardware reset), you'll just have to go through the steps again..

@damned: what firmware are you using?

@Oncegone: gosh.. my pack contains everything from the original files.. it's fine if you don't wana use it.. because i know some noobs who need helps and my pack is just something really noob-friendly to help. running a downgrader to 1.5 is so much better than doing 2.71 because 2.71 currently can't play any infrastructure games.. while 1.5 can. also, many have used my pack without problems. you'll be surprised at how much noobs that will add you as ask questions by placing your MSN here.. they just keep coming. and they will ask stupid questions until you can't take it,

 » yay?

how to switch back to 2.71 the 'proper' way? off the psp?

cause i tried to off it and yeh it turn back to 2.71 but after that it cant run devhook for 2.71 or i cant even do that home+start thingy to switch back to 1.5.

@ 42
to get Back to 2.71 from the 1.5 you will need to load Devhook and select the 2.71 flash Firmware. this will take it back to 2.71.

Also this note. If you want to just run Iso's from your 2.71 you do not need the 1.5 firmware dumb. you can just load devhook and select the ISO you want to run and set the Firmware to 2.71 Flash. this will load the iso on the original firmware. so that if you want to change games or quit playing a iso all you have to do is open devhook and change the iso you have loaded. without having to emulate anyother firmware. hope this helps a few questions.

okay, so now my 2.71 can work like 1.5, with devhook and all, without switching firmware to 1.5 right?

but at times my devhook wont load, why is it so? it gives me an error and when i had it, i redo the whole HEN-C thingy again, just to get it to work.

sorry, noob here. =|

 » you're doing something wrong..

you have to run the HENC again if you've restarted your PSP.. because the patch is not permanant.. it's temporary. so if you've turned off your PSP completely, the next time you turn it on, just go over to the photo section and henc folder to enable the patch again.. you'll get a game read error for the devhook on 2.71 if you don't run the patch. i thought i already said that clearly in my readme .. read it completely before you do anything.

   by NumberNine - 2006-10-02
 » mm.

does devhook restarts the psp if you exit it? cause if i execute devhook and EXIT the program, ive got to repatch it.

= i sound so long-winded, m3h. its my first time with any homebrew thingy for psp. so yeh.

 » to #47 and #48..

NumberNine, you don't have to repatch it cause when you exit, it's not a hard reset. ^^

OROROROROR.. upgrade to 2.71, then download my pack and read the readme, yes you can run games from your memstick now. (:

» how can i get 1.5 files...... what kind of file are..?

are those 1.5 files, a dump file for a 1.5 psp or a eboot file(updates one)?

and, once i have them, where to put them, and how to load them?

» how do you bypass the update thing

hi, i was able to load the game etc... but im not able to play because it need fw 2.6 but i emulated to 1.5 i tried someone's step of going to dev and selecting dev and then fw 2.71 and iso but it doesn't seem to be working. Anyhelp would be appreciated. thanks in advance

 » So this is a "downgrader" for TA-082 2.71 PSP's

So this is the actual downgrader for TA-082 PSPs that run v.2.71 right?

It's a bit strange since it's one for 2.71 but not for 2.5/2.6 and the others.

So you are able to run devhook and do all the things you can do with a downgraded non-TA-082 PSP?

   by Zephyrus - 2006-10-03
 » to Richard..

go get my pack and read the instructions.. you do not need to emulate 1.50 to play any ISO.. just select 2.71(flash) when you're in the 2.71 devhook.. ^^

and zero.. its not a downgrader, it's a 1.50 emulator as well as a ISO loader. if you want to run ISO/CSO just select the 2.71(flash) in your devhook for 2.71 menu, don't have to emulate 1.5 then back up. and once you emulate 1.5, yeah you can play all 1.5 homebrew in their original format.

i actually already dl your pack and did all the step but i do not know why wheneven i try to either load a game or 2.71 it just turns off.

» im unsure about your problems then..

then i guess i'm sorry, i can't help you with that. the instructions in my package was meant to be clear-cut, but i won't know if you've did something wrong. take your time sorting this out. good luck! ^^

 » thanks anyways

yea... i dun know. but ill keep trying. when i select the iso it doesn't even ask me anything like with umd or no umd. thanks tho.
