Will Manhunt 2 be censored? - Image 1Rockstar may be used to their mature titles getting plenty of controversy, but Manhunt 2 proves to be the most problematic. Not only was it banned from the UK and given a preliminary Adults Only rating, Sony and Nintendo are also turning their backs on the game supposed to be for the PS3 and Wii.

Kotaku claims to have received word from Nintendo, saying:

Games made for Nintendo systems enjoy a broad variety of styles, genres and ratings. These are some of the reasons our Wii and Nintendo DS systems appeal to such a broad range of people. But as with books, television and movies, different content is meant for different audiences. That's why the ESRB provides ratings to help consumers understand the content of a game before they purchase it. As stated on Nintendo.com, Nintendo does not allow any AO-rated content on its systems.

Adding insult to the injury, even Sony which has been receiving much third-party support from Rockstar is ditching the game. Their statement reads:

For questions or comment regarding the rating of Manhunt 2, please contact the publisher, Rockstar. Currently it's SCE's policy not to allow the playback of AO rated content on our systems.

Anyway, unless the ESRB softens up or Manhunt 2 is placed under some censorship, the publishing company is in a bind. The game's already got a smaller market, no thanks to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), and now it might not even see the light of release at all.

GTA: San Andreas was able to avoid the AO rating of doom, so something could happen for Manhunt, too. We'll keep you posted on any new word.

I agree with Metalspector too. This game needs to be destroyed and no one should ever play it, period. There is nothing "good" to this game, and anyone who would want to play it obviously has some issues that they need to work out. Fantasizing about killing people like this is not right, and you should seriously seek some help now if you have any interest in this game. I hope this game goes down along with Take-Two... Bye Bye to both of you... Thank you Sony and Nintendo for sticking to your original words.

1. Learn how to spell.
2. Get a life outside of gaming. I'm sure you will get much calmer. A game like this in your posession would create a new case of virginia tech.

   Re: Meno (Unregistered) - 2007-06-29
» @ Metalspector and his ilk

You folks are disgusting, and here's why.

You censor.

You cannot deny or disagree with it. Once something is sensored, a third party will continue to sensor, and do so as they please. You can disagee with the game, the company, the genre, format, or concept all you like, but once you decide that you (or anyone else for that matter) is capable of deciding what should and shouldn't be shown to other people, you become either wolf or sheep.

I'm not going to argue what violent programming of any sort does to encourage people, because that is an invitation to a squawking match. But you have no right to decide what may or may not be acceptable for me to view, or play.

You have no right. Burn copies of Huck Finn all you want, censorship is an evil to progression, and an affront to personal freedom, choice and thought.

 » Ratings????????/

It seems that SCE likes to make an expensive system, but the market is towards the 17 and under age group? Why would SCE not publish games with an AO rating? If the reason is to prevent the 17 and under group get their hands on it, then its bullsh*t if you ask me. I did not spend $600 to play games like Mario, Sonic, Crash, etc... I want realistic, world dominating, war driven and mass killings in my video games. If it wasn't for these types of games, I would have to resort to the real life violent instead...lol. Dont you not feel your being treated like a kid? Whats the worst thing Manunt can do? Its bound to be hugely popular, especially with all this press, making all the companies involved a few million!

Its rich coming from sony too. How many movies are released on their label that involve extreme gore, violence, sex and probably a rape scene along the lines. Yet they wont let an animated masterpiece on their system. And theres Nintendo trying to reach a wider audiance and all they are doing is keeping there childish image and stopping their own growth from happening.

Why would Sony and Nintendo wait THIS long to make this announcement? Rockstar has already invested a boatload of money into the production of this game, and at the last minute Sony and Nintendo have the balls to say no. They should have known right from the get-go that Manhunt will more than likely receive an AO rating, and should have made this announcement BEFORE Rockstar got too involved in it.

Let's hope the ESRB has taken some groovy uppers when they review the game, because that's the only way it'll achieve an M rating.

said no due to the moral implications of the game it doesn't say a lot of good about Microsoft social conscience if they take the game...

especially now that they have this project of trying to sell to moms and putting away their image of being strictly hardcore and get into the mainstream market.

they would be stupid to grab it adter ninty and sony declined... their image would take a huge hit and they will risk losing the mainstream market because of the perception that people will have of the compny and the product... and for what??? to satisfy a couple of gamers who already avail of their products in the first place anyway.

Microsoft would be in a good business position to keep the game. It would strengthen their library while at the same time appeasing a developer who was nearly 100% responsible for the success of a previous console of a competitor. Microsoft would aid R*/Take2 in recovering development costs.

 » No worries

I think I know how this is going to end.

Rockstar will take some censorship on the game. But nothing that will affect gameplay. They just have to cut off some of the "offending" scenes, like the porn movie on the back mentioned in NGamer review and some gory details.

I personally think maybe some of that censorship won't be so bad to the game itself, as my stomach has grown some limits as I've grown older, and if the game is THAT realistic, I think I wouldn't enjoy it.

One thing is watching an alien blow up, some pixelated characters being turned to dust or some rubber zombies (like those gory movies that make us laugh) turn to a pile of blood; one other thing is to watch something that resembles perfectly like a human body being slaughtered, sawed or worse. Even worse is if you are making the movement of sawing that someone's limbs (like in the Wii version). I personally would have no pleasure in simulating such action.

As for the "censorship", they just have to "cut" enough to make the BBFC lift the ban and ESRB rate it as M. Then both Nintendo and Sony will be happy.

One thing is certain. This controversy certainly works as free advertising (maybe it was intended all the way?). Plus, if the game is as GOOD as NGamer says, it will sell a lot, and I mean a LOT. Those guys at Take Two / Rockstar are not dumb, no sir...

games systems arent like the movies . if you look at movies , you cvan also buy hard core pron ......but you cant buy that on a wii or a ps2 . why ? because no game company wants to be associated with pron . so , if sony and nintendo allow this game , an AO game on thier system , they would have no moral or legal defence gaainst a porn company that wanted to release a pron game on thier system . makes sense doesnt it?
anyone notice the absence of porn games on all home console systems since forever?
anyone notice that ?
yeah , thats because they have all said NO to pron from the very start , and they would like to keep it that way. so to all you *****s saying ... ' lets us virtually kill people in gaming world or we will cry ' you have to understand that that its not just about manhunt , its about maintaining the integrity of the whole platform . its not about just one game ....... its about a future where all games will be judged on thier merit and not by how controvercial the game is . you guys need to play call of duty 2 on multiplayer rather than play this no skill game that rockstar keeps bringing out... its easy to kill the computer AI , but you cant kill me in COD 3 , you know why MOFO's... cos I got SKILLS... hahaha hahah.. . and so , thats why manhunt is being banned.

 » VIDEOGAMES AND MOVIES

people are always trying to say a videogame is worse than a movie, so u can get away with more on movies. but videogames are pixelated, and movies star real people. hmmm, i wonder which one looks realer. and since this videogame isnt about goin around f_ckin peoples faces it should be considered mature, and not adults only, which would be better suited to hardcore porn titles. dont u think?
