The more realistic and involving the game gets, and the greater the similarity between the action in the game and real life action, the stronger the negative effects would be. No, your son may not turn into a criminal. But exposure will take a toll on his life somewhere, probably in interpersonal relationships. These are subtle effects. They take time to surface. A teen isn't going to notice them. It's when you have other potentiating factors -- family problems, mental health issues, extreme stress, dangerous neighborhoods. Playing these games with or without the Wii enhancement is not going to take the typical teenage boy and make a killer out of him. |

This is why games have ratings. Its just stupid parents who don't care, then when their kid goes postal they blame the game. You wouldn't rent SAW for you kid to watch, why get him Manhunt?
Just slap a goddamn "parents strongly advised" on the front cover and send em on their way. All these crochety old men in law and politics can't grasp the concept.
The points is that you can't change the fact many parents are irresponsible and that no matter what thiswill end in the hands of little kids, then in the future that kid could be proned to domestic violence and or murdering of an innocent life and an innocent life shouldn't pay the consequences shouldn't he? Especially when some of this murders could be solved by banning certain games that exaggerate in grotesquety. All those who go against banning this game are unsensitive pricks who would value their joy of playing this sadictic game over innocent life's whou could be harmed.
no metal, I'm pretty sure he gets the point just fine.
You're saying that it's ok that parents these days just couldn't be arsed to care, and that we should encouarge that behavior to continue by doing their jobs for them.
He never said it was OK. If you actually read what he wrote, you'd see he's saying it's because some parents cant be arsed that it's being banned, not that it's OK for them to be that way.
It's because of the parents that cant be arsed that this is banned. If it wasn't for them, and the game was unavailable to these little kids, it'd probably just get the M/18 and be on sale.

What a complete BS! I want this game to come out.! damnit!
I hear ya; I would really like to own this game on the PSP, but it's becoming doubtful that it will ever be available for purchase in its current form.
this is stupid they dont all these political assssswipes go harass the smut pedelers or somthing, this game was intended for the older age demigrafic and this is so bull stuff.I think companys and other entitys that think they can force the american citizens hands and try to control and cencer ower media and violate ower constutional rights should be considered terrorists because they are trying to restrict the very ideals that military men like my self have put ower lives on the line to defend just to see that its been all for nothing other than letting some prick polititions rise to power.
...you shouldn't be using the word. Also, no constitutional rights have been violated. No one's prevented the game from being made, and the constitution doesn't guarantee that every game must be published.
my ***** burns at all this crap, i mean yes violent media has its negative effects, but how many kids have actually killed in the name of a video game? 0, thats how many. All that this is is the overwhelming fear being pumped into stupid everyday citizens =by media propaganda. You get people like jack thompson saying th is will train killers, and you have a bunch of idiots trembling with fear which turns to anger on why they made this game. Which is a complete load cause theres way more violent movies and games elsewhere.
All i will say is this situation is a load of crap. let the game come out, it isnt like kids will play it if it has an M rating anwyays, the store employees will get fired! Or was that rule not passed? And why would kids even be playing this? dont parents notice what they buy for their kids? (cause i know kids dont get 50 bucks than drive themselves to the store to buy it) I remembered when i went with my mom to buy Unreal Tournament for the Dreamcast, the gy told my mom it was a mature rated game, adn why, she was cool with it and all, adn watched me play it to make sure it wasnt horrifically brutal.
People should stop sending propaganda around about these games, enforce the ESRB ratings and call it a day. If they did that, things would be fine, since kids wouldnt get it, and people wouldnt be afraid of frickin video games thev=yve never played.
So stop negative propaganda, enforce ratings and shut up, problem solved
perfectly said. everyone knows politicians always lie, yet theyre stupid enough to believe someone like jack thompson.
Good job, goemon4, I strongly agree with your final sentence of your post.
yeah don't they know kids are more likely to kill others based off of movies? since hollywood actors are put on a higher pedastol by the public where video games are still 3rd rate entertainment.
now we have the music industry that basically rewards criminal activity.
well as long as you sing about it.
now i'll move on to sports.i see in baseball alone you can use steroids and other performance enhancing drugs that are illegal for common everyday people but if you get caught using them you get a small suspension.
so basically you have all other forms of media that more than encourage kids to do criminal activities, they practically tell you you HAVE TO do it in order to make something of yourself.
the bottom line to all this is, us gamers are taking away revenue from the mass media and they don't like it since they can't get a piece of the profit.
it's no different then how they used to treat the internet until they were forced to except it or be left behind.
This post is exactly our point. These people are saying that it *may* subtly affect teenagers. Which is why this game was given an ADULTS ONLY rating. It shouldn't be banned for being an adults game! Someone show this to Sony and Nintendo, show them why it was given an AO rating, and why they should allow adults to play this game ¬.¬'
It's sad when we can't even trust parents and we force censorship upon people. They should call it NFA instead of AO. NFA is NOT FOR ANYONE
"N for Nobody," to go with the rest of the ratings
And who's rubbing his hands together and laughing maniacally right now? Yup, Jack Thompson. The man didn't even budge and he sees his work come to light, it's amazing.
The problem with these games is parental responsability, as said before. Nowadays society works in a way that no one gets left out, so as long as someone doesn't understand videogames are harmless, stuff like this will continue to happen. Maybe in a generation or two our children will look back and call us stupid. Hey, I already call us stupid!
Manhunt 2 is just another example of what some people don't understand, and it's natural human behaviour to fear what we don't understand. Frankly I don't want anything to do with the game, playing something about mindless violence is not my style. But I know a lot of people like it, and that those people have enough brains to distinguish between a game and reality. Most of us wouldn't even consider doing the stuff we can do on Manhunt, and it's not by playing it that we will.
What a load of crap.
By their statements I should be fighting constantly and beating people to death by now, just because I played games like DOOM when I was a kid.
What a load of crap. If the parents would DO THEIR JOBS and teach their kids the difference from reality and fantasy, then you wouldn't have any problems.
I have been in 1 fight in life, and that is because they "tried" to rob me at knife point. Luckily I have been studying Martial Arts and knew how to handle that situation. But that is the only time I ever used that training.
I know the difference from reality and fantasy. Because my parents brought me up properly, not just let a computer/tv or video games raise me like parents these days are doing.
Manhunt is an awesome game. i was so happy when i heard that it was goin to b on the psp. now i'm really pissed off. i'm a teenager and i love horror films and games. now what am i goin to do to b able 2 play this game? it's not the parent's fault it's their kids who play it. it's like a 10 year old kid saying 2 his mom " mommy can u get me manhunt?" then the mother is like "no...those games r bad 4 u and god knows wut u will do after u play that game." then the kid tells his mom that he won't do that stuff and the mom is like fine. and she gets her kid the game and the piece of ***** kid goes and kills someone. now that pisses me off. i jus want the government 2 kno that they shouldn't ruin it 4 the rest of the teenagers who can control themselves.
It didn't get banned in Europe. It got banned in the UK and Germany, but the rest of Europe banned it.
It's called downloading games illegally. Millions of people do it, and I'm sure thousands of kids will get their hands on the game anyways via P2P/BitTorrent clients. Banning games is hardly effective at all, so it really doesn't matter.
Yes, my 12 year old is smart enough to mod his own console and download any game he wants illigaly and I don't care (Sarcasm to anyone that can't tell)
People old enough to download things illigaly are old enough to realize what they are doing, and more than likly know the difference between fantasy and real life. If banning didn't matter, Then this problem wouldn't even come up on the radar. If banning didn't matter there would be no esrb. If banning didn't matter no one would care, but obviously, to the well educated people. It matters.
Lawl wut a nub
I've played the 1st. Manhunt when I was 11, and I wasn't shocked or anything.
But I don't see any purpose to this.
BTW In Mexico anyone can buy any game.
A 8 year old kid may buy Postal 2 or Manyunt and... nothing is done
So you'd let your 12 year old play this game??!!
obviously no, I don't think your quite grasping my point....
Please stop this false advertising campain.
Its just teasing for you bi...es !
And for the point, I prefer to exhaust my violence in a video game instead of real live action !
What I find disturbing is that generally speaking, our tolerance for basic displays of violence has grown gradually but steadily over the last 50 years. I doubt teens in the 1950's would have wanted to see this sort of thing. Perhaps some would - I don't know, but my point is that, through our exposure via video (movies, news, etc.) we have reached this point.
I'm not saying that we are inclined to wield axes or pull the heads of cats. Just that we seem to have gotten quite used to horror, gore, and real life death in your face (we've all seen it on the 'net).
I can say this though - most teens that I know that turned into parents ultimately decided that this sort of thing wasn't good. You that are teens/young adults right now will, generally speaking, also take that position at some point. Us adults were teens once with attitudes like yours, and yet most of us now think games like this are bad.
You might want to ask yourself why that is; and don't be surprised in a few years when you ultimately change your pov too.
