MapThis v0.5 screenshot - Image 1We're letting the PSP owners know that developer Deniska has released the much-awaited version 0.5 of the MapThis! homebrew application. And as the past few teaser vids have indicated, this latest release of Deniska's GPS navigation tool for the handheld carries a ton of new functions:

  • Birds Eye mode
  • Inverted colors (night) mode
  • Voice Prompts / Alerts support. (* see notes below)
  • Missing zoom layer rendering (only for gpsfs maps). MapThis! attempts to render a missing zoom layer with shrinked
  • tiles from the next zoom level.
  • Screenshots are saved in ms0:/PSP/PHOTO now
  • Icons/sounds can now be located in either a particular map directory or system (system/sounds or system/icons) directory.
  • POI and WAYPOINT files can now also be looked up from ms0:/PSP/COMMON
  • Geodata can now be shared between maps if geodata.dat file is placed in the same directory as EBOOT.PBP.
  • The program will attempt to load geodata.dat file in the current map directory first.
  • New tiger line geodata for USA (2006se from 03/2007) compiled and available through gmdl18a and higher versions.
  • Edit functionality added to "Configuration" screen. While in Configuration screen, scroll down until the line that needs to be edited is on top. Press [X] to enter the edit mode. You can use up/down arrows to increment/decrement current character by 1.
  • Use [START] to save or [SELECT] to cancel the edit.
  • New current position prediction logic, hopefully resulting in smoother scrolling.
  • A few rendering bug fixes in graphics routines.
  • New parameters added to configuration file: STARTUPFREQUENCY, STARTUPSCREENMODE, NIGHTMODE, SPEEDLIMIT.
  • SATINFOFREQUENCY defines cpu frequency on Satellite Info screen (PSP-290 only)
  • Timezone parameter removed from configuration, timezone is determined based on your psp date/time settings.
  • Localization support (language packs).
  • PSP-290 version does not require prx files to run in non-gps mode.
  • Attached source code adopted to the latest version of PSPSDK
And in case you're using a Holux GPS, Deniska further added this note:

One of the main complaints of the holux users is the lack of sound, since the plug, required for serial connection, automatically mutes PSP's speakers.
Mr7 just dropped in with this easy solution:
"Chop off the tip of the audio plug"
I tried it on 2 of my cablesand it works just fine..

That's the rough on Map This!'s latest release. We strongly recommend would-be users to view the readme included in the file bundle - most of the information you need is available there. On a last note, the author (via the readme) is requesting users to view Google Map's "Terms of Use" agreement, given that Map This! receives its image data from the said service.

And hopefully there are some GPS that don't need a connector mod , re-wiring etc etc. Is there a GPS that will work right off without any mod at all? If anyone know please help me with the brand and may be the model number. Many thanks.

anyone know how to look for preloaded maps of big cities for this program ???like nyc or la

   Re: gps (Unregistered) - 2007-08-20
 » gmdl

it's already been said. go here, http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t+33068 use gmdl (google map downloader) to zoom into a section of the world and download the map. it's easy but you have to at least have a little patience. it takes a while to download. just read the tutorial, let the pc program do its thing then copy the map over to your psp when it's done. use the application because it's going to take just as much time to download a map from someone else as it is to make one yourself.

qj is ***** and doesn't allow equal signs. the + after t in the url posted above is an equal sign.

   Re: lavino (Unregistered) - 2007-08-20
» why not make it easier?

To have preloaded maps of big cities in a repository or something? So everyone who wanted a map have to make their own?

» will a Holux GR-213U USB GPS work?

I bought this last year for my Laptop. I'd love to use my PSP instead. Anyone tried this? I am guessing I would need to buy some sort of adapter. Maybe just a large USB to mini-USB adapter? Could it be that easy?

 » ugh

first off you need a GPS (global positioning system). not a General Radio Packet System (which is for cell phones and *****). GPS works anywhere in the world, its free, it uses numerous satellites to find your position. get a holux brand or just get the 290 that attaches right onto the usb at the top of the psp.

and QJ is super late on this...

im canadian would this app work in canda aswell??

   Re: lavino (Unregistered) - 2007-08-21
» the app works everywhere I think..

I am in Canada and I can assure you this app alone works for I already got a map of my canadian home city running in the app. The GPS should work too otherwise they have to take the G out of GPS ;) Whether you can find the right receiver hardware then it is another question.

   Re: kfmgnaf (Unregistered) - 2007-08-21

» does your prx files have to match the firmware using?

I got the 2.71 version of both usbxx.prx for the PSP-290
I haven't got the receiver unit yet but I wonder if those prx will work under 3.4 or 3.5x CFW? I put the 3.11 prx files I got an error message first loading MapThis. But it I use those 2.71 prx I don't see the error. But then I don't have the real hardware receiver to verify yet.

does anyone know if you can save a whole state map instead of piece piece..cause i have a 4 gig memory and dont mind using 1/2 jus for the map

   Re: lavino (Unregistered) - 2007-09-02
» even if you have a 4G card...

I doubt you can load a map that big. Remember that at least partial of the map will need to load in memory. I tried to a 5mile radius map of my city and I already notice some slowdown...

» to anyone who has a PSP290 and mapthis running

what is your longitude shows when you go to GPSINFO screen (the one that shows how many and which satellite in a list). I have my longitude showing a number like 30x.xx (I am on west cost near Seattle) I see the map saying my map point to longitude as W123.xx And I got a coord out of range message if I try GPS mode after I have the PSP290 hooked up. I see that a screenshot of a 0.4 mapthis showing w###.## but this 0.5 I got is not giving in w###.## but just a number like 300.123 instead. Anyone experience this or I missed out some configuration?
