PlayStation Portable - Image 1

More good news about the highly-anticipated Sony PlayStation Portable 3.80 M33 custom firmware, and this bit comes directly from none other than Mathieulh himself. It seems that as of this writing, the unreleased custom firmware is already in proper working order and boots perfectly. It runs all existing homebrew program in User Mode as well. This in itself should already be great news, as we're pretty much guaranteed a safe, non-bricking and still awesome CFW to play with. Why, then, isn't it released yet?

Mathieulh reports that there are still something that Dark AleX needs to iron out before declaring 3.80 M33 a finished product - namely, the NIDs Resolver that allows the launch of homebrew programs in Kernel mode. It will also help in making sure that all the plug-ins present will be usable without any extensive modifications. It's safe to say that while this doesn't sound like much, it's still a very important (and very time-exhaustive) thing to work on, so we'll just have to be patient until DAX ties up all the loose ends.

UPDATE: Those hoping to pick up the 3.80 M33 custom firmware may have to wait a few more days. It's come to our attention that Mathieulh has given a small update on the work for the CFW. According to him, work is currently being finished on the NIDs Resolver, and we may very well see a release within the next week or so.

That being said, we suppose everyone will just have to keep patient in the meantime. We'll keep checking around for updates, just in case in comes out sooner than expected, so feel free to keep QJ bookmarked for the latest updates on the upcoming CFW.

Why the hell isn't anybody developing cfw for the PS3?
and I don't need the linx whores to flaming...
we need cfw on the PS3 cause you can't do
everything from linx and you achive more
through hacking the PS3 instead of being
content with linx.

Come on, work it out people, get the PS3
cracked, hacked and stacked with homebrew.

Didn't take this long to get the PSP cracked.

Besides, I think I remember hearing something
about Mathieulh dropping PSP coding to start
working on cracking the PS3.

I know I read that here somewhere, so whats up
Mathieulh... we gunna get any updates on any
progress with you PS3 tweekings?

Its simply because there are no exploits. And even if we DO find an exploit, we cant run unsigned code, because the CPU will physically check the contents of the ram and verify its contents signature before executing. And the remaining area of the ram is marked as Non-Executable. Which means the instruction pointed can never jump to that location, so we cant load our unsigned code like we do when we find a PSP exploit.

If you want a basic idea about the IMMENSE level of protection and checking of code on the next gen consoles read this.

 » @wicked_insider

no matter what exploits are found, sony will prosecute anybody who tries to hack the ps3 firmware. theyre not making the same mistake with the ps3 that they did with the psp. that and mine only has an 80, and sata notebook drives arent as cheap as ide's and blu ray games are massive, so its not all that worth it to not pay for the games. i mean i agree 60 bucks is realllly expensive, but i use iso's with my psp and i pay for my ps3 games because they're all worth it.

   Re: Wicked_Insider - 2008-01-04
 » @gnizzlespot

Your assuming I want to pirate games and I don't.

Besides, I thought SONY was going to encourage
home brew on the PS3?

Thats all I want is to expand home brew over to
the PS3 and plenty of it.

Sony is encouraging homebrew. Thats why they let u run linux. But nobody's bothering to use it though.

   Re: Wicked_Insider - 2008-01-05
 » @mohaas05

Linx isn't home brew it's an OS.

Since when does an OS count as home brew?

Besides, linx doesn't run worth a ***** on
the PS3 even the so called YDL which was
created specifically for the PS3 and runs like
a dog.

I'm talking about real home brew here people.

i know linux is an os numnuts. I was saying thats how Sony is encouraging homebrew. If you don't like it then you don't really have any other options.

   Re: B - 2008-01-05

Linux sucks on ps3 because there is no way to use the graphics card in the machine, which makes it pretty hard to code any type of homebrew games.

Do you even realize the amount of work and time it takes to figure out the NID translations to set what will basically be a standard for homebrew on the next firmwares? Waiting a bit now sure beats waiting for every homebrew that works on 3.71 to be updated each and every version - regardless of what your patience is like.

Compare it to a football player if you must... but the analogy fails horribly since there is absoloutely no comparison at all.

the fat psp with 1.5 should be able to upgrade directly to this firmware... for the slim you will need to get to 3.60 m33 by using the pandora method... you can follow this guide by Lounger

http://pspupdates.qj.net/Lounger-s-M33-installation-guide-by-for-PSP-Slim/pg/49/aid/102187

on the fat. make a pandoras battery and magic memstick before you do anything
i hope you have a spare fat batt
then you can update fat psp to 3.80m33 when it comes out as it will fix the idstorage keys for ta-082 before it updates
as for the slim
i know it needs pandora but ive never done a slim
i do know if you look just a little, you'll find a guide somewhere

   Re: bottmint - 2008-01-04

All you do is get pandora mem stick then dl daxs despertar del cementerio v3 and run it with the pandora mem stick and it will then be able to run on the slim and you can see the stuff on the screen. its also compatible with the phat and it installs 3.71 m33-2.

You can't get CFW on Slim if you're over 3.60 firmware. I tried it myself and it doesn't work. I'd say sell the ta model you have and buy a regular PSP like mine. purchased in USA.

yes you can, you just need a Pandora's Battery and a Magic Mem Stick. My slim had 3.71 OFW when i bought it (and i upgraded to 3.72 before i put CFW on it).

   Re: solsticebeast - 2008-01-06

I have a OFW 3.70 on my PSP with no CFW. So to me that means that no matter what version of OFW you have that you should be able to install the CFW 3.80 M33 with the upgrade.

However since you already have OFW 3.80 I don't really know. If DAX does use the PSAR Dumper to install the CFW version he's putting out then I think you would be fine with the version you have for now.

It all depends on how he's going to be doing the installation of the CFW.

   Re: Nicko01 - 2008-01-08
 » solsticebeast......

PSAR dumper is only a program to decrypt the firmware and has nothing to do with installing the firmware, it only will let you see all the files stored in the DATA.PSAR file, which is part of another file called EBOOT.PBP. This contains all that is used in the firmware, which allows us (more accurately DAX) create a custom firmware, which needs 1.50 or any older custom firmware to be installed. You will need to downgrade to 1.50 using Pandora's Battery (google for a tutorial) before you can actually install it.

On a different topic, I really would not like to be in DAX's position. No one else can make the firmwares as well as he can, so basically the entire homebrew world relies on him. He really can't quit now that he is so needed. I would say that Mathieulh and Fanjita (plus everyone who codes with him) and various other people who have worked with DAX or have great coding skills (sorry for not mentioning all who deserve it) will be able to learn from him and develop their own, just as good, and maybe give him a bit of a break.

Everyone, donate to these great developers. I, being a programmer myself, know how difficult and time consuming coding actually is.

   Re: billylee8 - 2008-01-05
 » Calm down...

- Copy the UPDATE directory into /PSP/GAME/UPDATE and copy the EBOOT.PBP of the 3.80 Sony updater there but with name "380.PBP". Note: the program will not even show if you copy it to a different folder than that.

- If you are in the fat psp, make sure you have configured the psp to run the game folder in the 3.XX kernel.

- Execute the program, it requires 78% of battery. If you have idstorage corrupted due to a downgrader, the program will ask you to correct it automatically so the update can continue.

- Press X, and the Sony updater will begin. Sit and enjoy while Sony code installs 3.80 M33 :)

- When finished, the updater will ask you to reboot (pressing X or O). DO IT. Do not skip this step shutting down the psp by yourself, or you'll end with a brick.

- You should be now in 3.80 M33

- If you read this far you just wasted your time BECAUSE THE FIRMWARE ISN'T EVEN RELEASED YET
