Sony PlayStation Portable - Image 1

While everyone may have their own opinion about whether or not Sony IS cooking up another version of the Sony PlayStation Portable (i.e. the oft-rumored PSP Phone), it seems that one of the most prominent figures in the handheld's homebrew scene has found a clue that might prove that future model's existence. That figure is none other than Mathieulh himself, and that clue is the string "kd/pspbtcnf_03g.bin".

What's so special about this seemingly-random string of letters and numbers, you ask? The key lies in the annals of history, namely firmware version 2.71 and 2.80. Those who have contributed into the construction of custom firmwares have discovered in those versions the string pspbtcnf_02g, which apparently suggest the support of a new hardware or at least a new operative mode.

With the PSP Slim & Lite's release, further investigation revealed that 02g is actually that handheld revision's codename, with the 2 and g probably standing for the second generation. By that logic, what would 03g mean? Yep, that's right - a new generation of the Sony PlayStation Portable. A quote from Mathieulh's post, verbatim:

We believe it is the same with the 3rd generation hardware which they are now preparing for sure. Will it be yet another lighter (and pandora proof) psp or will it be the new psp phone? Time will tell.

There you have it, straight from the Sony PlayStation Portable developer's mouth. Keep it locked right here for more developments.

I remember some P o p p y C o c k about wifi
phone capabilities back in the 2.71 2.8 days.

This will either manifest it's self as the new PSP
phone of nothing at all.

By the way the company has proven it's self
un-trust worthy time after time, perhaps we
will see a PSPhone or if not the phone another
generation of PSP's.

I doubt that phone capabilities will ever grace
the face of the first two generations if this
supposed PSPhone is true.

 » "Sony Playstation Portable Developer"

such big name for a hacker.
I find it fascinating to see that people addresses programmers like DAX , Mathieulh and the rest as "Developers".

about the clue for next iteration of psp, well ok so i have to find another sucker who will buy my used psp lite so i can buy the next one.
but of course if the new iteration doesnt run custom firmware, then sony will have to wait further before i purchase.

What's wrong with calling them developers, idiot? They develop homebrew apps for the PSP.

Now GTFO.

probably that 03g means a new motherboard like the ta-086,etc. is probably in the works, maybe it will be anti pandora, but i think that coming up with a new psp sku soon after the slim came out makes no sense. if that was the case, then why release psp slim if they have not fixed hacks issues

Definitely. It's about time I upgraded my Nokia 1112.

» anyone else heard about this?

I heard not too long ago about a rumoured sony product that you could roll up in a ball and slip into your pocket as it was made of sqidgy material. Then it became solid as soon as electrical current passed through this substance and could be made to fit the curve of your hands. probably just old rumour but would be cool if it was real and i promise i didn't just make this up i read it on a forum ages back.

 » Kinda true

THey actually made a patent for it. You can read more about it here: http://pspupdates.qj.net/The-Future-of-Sony-Portable-Gaming-A-Foldable-Screen-/pg/49/aid/54896

Would be exciting if it were true, my screen is starting to get a bit scratched. :P

The phone you are telling about was Nokia 888 - it's only a concept phone, because we don't have liquid batteries right now ;-( Maybe in 20 years?

is it even vaguely possible that this is the new 03g?
   by Binary - 2007-12-20
 » i'd say

a new motherboard that wont let us downgrade or use 1.5 again.

Re: Aces In The Palm - 2007-12-20
 » what?

do you have a slim that can use 1.50 ?
dont think so
i do agree with one of the comments above about it being another mobo revision though
if you think about it.
2.71 was when it was first noticed
by memory on ta-082 and 86's it was impossible to get to 1.50 without modifying idstorage
new mobo will probably be pandora proof and maybe even have better securities against custom IPL files
who knows

 » hmm

Exactly, why make a new model when the SLIM just came out? What else could they do that would be useful? Makes no sense, probably just a new motherboard, and actually it probably doesn't mean anything significant. I seriously doubt it'll be a new model.

   by Stealth! - 2007-12-20
 » I don't think...

This is a new model for PSP, since the PSP lite just came out. Im guessing is a mother board or something to help cut more power than before. I just don't see this being a new model.

 » um

you realize theres like 4 different motherboard revisions for the phat? (TA-079, TA-081, TA-082, TA-086). The Slim is TA-085.

Re: Aces In The Palm - 2007-12-24
 » yes we relise this

we also relise that the file in question was first noticed in 2.71
what firmware was it that ta-082 and ta-086 couldnt downgrade past without editting idstorage
the 2.71 ta-082 downgrader from dark alex should give you a big hint

 » I don't think so

perhaps the 3rd generation thing mentioned in the above article merely refers greater compatibility with the PS3, and home-compatible phones, as that's the next biggest thing on the PS horizon...

why would they start rolling out firmware changes for something that isnt likely to be released for another year if at all?

I don't doubt that there will be further revisions of the hardware in the future, but I doubt that firmware relating to these hardware revisions will be made available until immediately prior to their release... but that said, Im no industry insider and my speculation is by no means meant to be taken as fact, it just seems to me that with Sony's ongoing efforts to hamper the efforts of hackers of their products, they wouldn't be rolling out firmware unnecessarily early for the very reason of it falling into the home-brew scene's hands early.

as I stated earlier, I believe it more plausible that the pspbtcnf file relates more to an improvement in cross platform stability...

and to throw in more rumour speculation; perhaps this could mean that the PSP will be getting Home access after all... (remote play access lair style, anyone?)
