GamePro reports that according to Media Create, for the week of January 22 to 28, sales of the PS2 totaled 20,995 units, while those of the PS3 were 19,996.

If in case you're a bit skeptical about the range of their data (come on, it's Media Create!) feel comfort in the knowledge that the research company gets their data from around 3,000 stores across Japan, and then uses that data to estimate nationwide sales across Japan.

Apparently, sales of the PS2 have been so good that Sony increased its shipment target for the PS2 from 11 million units to 13 million units. Some of us here at QJ would like to hastily attribute this sales spike to GTA: San Andreas, which launched in Japan on January 25 and has since topped the charts with an estimated sales of 227,261 units. That's more than double the top ranked DS game.

Nintendo's Wii sold 83,754 units in the week. Microsoft managed get sales of their consoles to increase by around 300 units to 7,365 units. We're thinking GoW had something to do about this.

As expected, the biggest selling piece of hardware was the DS Lite, which sold around 194,526 units against 35,700 units for rival PSP.

Considering all these numbers, it feels a bit odd to point out that the PSP is the Sony hardware that sold the most for the week. Cool.
