It's the middle of the month and numbers for last month have finally surfaced. Obviously, the biggest "war" going on is the one between the Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, and Nintendo Game Boy Advance. Yeah, normally I wouldn't include the GBA but that thing is a beast. It refuses to lie down and die like most "last-generation" systems do. Then again, maybe you should see what went on last month for yourself!

Xbox 360: 295,381 [1,504,724]
PlayStation 2: 206,995 [39,458,926]
Game Boy Advance: 169,115 [37,455,961]
PlayStation Portable: 162,438 [4,332,872]
Nintendo DS: 138,427 [4,447,092]
Xbox: 38,987 [15,737,984]
GameCube: 38,028 [12,046,319]

Now that you've had a chance to look at the numbers, let's look at them a bit more closely. The handheld front is as close as ever. Yet again, like it has for the past nine or so months, the GBA has come out on top. This piece of last generation technology continues to outsell both the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. The PSP and DS had some interesting points though. If I remember correctly, April was the month in which the PSP's core system was released in the United States. However, its sales are still lower than the month before it. The Nintendo DS also saw decreased sales, although I'd have expected worse for a system which should be replaced by the DS Lite in just a little bit. The PSP is catching up slowly but surely. Unlike Japan, where both handhelds launched in the same month, the DS had a head start in the US. Whether or not the PSP can take the lead with no killer app is a question though. New Super Mario Bros. launched today (Wednesday for Canadians). The DS Lite launches in June. If Brain Age takes off, the PSP is in trouble. Especially if Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core is not ready in time to combat Pokemon: Diamond and Pokemon Pearl. The GBA... Well. I have no idea what to do about that thing. It's like the Energizer Rabbit... It just keeps going and going and going. It doesn't even have any major game releases left unless Nintendo localizes Mother 3. At least Japan has moved on. The GBA only sells around 15,000 weekly while the DS sells around 180,000 weekly and the PSP 35,000 weekly.

The Xbox 360 shortages are finally over! This has of course caused a small spike in sales and the 360 has beaten the PS2 for the month. Sales have been reportedly quite strong for the first two weeks of April, but weaker for the last two. With shortages over, the Xbox 360 will finally have the opportunity to grow. Of course, with the success of the Xbox 360 comes the death of last generation consoles such as the Xbox and Gamecube (the PlayStation 2 is like the GBA... freakin' rabbits). The Xbox has just about no exclusives left and the Gamecube has a few, like Super Paper Mario which was announced at E3, but nothing that will help it at this point in its life. Those who want it should likely be waiting for the backward compatible Wii.

The summer months usually see a drought in the game industry. So don't be surprised if you see few titles worth getting in the next couple of months. And stop screaming for US sales every time I post Japanese ones! These only come once a month, so you'll see more mid-June! Also remember these are only US sales. Canadian sales are not included.

Hopefully this will help to squelch the notion that the psp is selling horribly. Though the ds is touted as curently having better games (i would agree, but also state that better is a relative term and i don't really play my ds or psp[well i web browse and rss on my psp so thats something, oh and daxter's awesome]) the future for the psp is very cheery.
tekken dark ressurection
ratchet and clank
ff7:crisis core
ps1 emulator (hopefully to include ff series)
field commander
devil may cry
future david jaffe game(god of war lead designer)
blade dancer
super monkey ball
METAL GEAR OPS
dungeon siege
coded arms 2 (i'm hopeful they can redeem themselves)

and more, so psp is still alive and kicking, not to mention about to gain its second wind.

Wow, in the month the GBA outsold the PSP. In total, DS has outsold the PSP by over 100,000 units. And when the DS Lite is released next month, it will widen that lead even further.

tomorrow I will make my great and daring odessey to the shores of my local EB game store, I will venture inside and face the store clerk and demand to purchase my Premium Xbox 360 console, then as I exit the store I will let loose my battle cry of victory as I walk down the street head held high as a proud owner of a new xbox 360

that or I'll go home crying because I got there to late :-(

 » and then

he'll come back a month later and trade it in b/c of the lack of games. also the annoyances of the bratty 12 year old population that is on xbl.

hope ya enjoy the 360 and the maybe 35 games that are coming out for it for the rest of the year.

stop being a tool and posting that crap list.

sure some are coming out this year but most will be either put back and or canceled, b/c that is what nintendo does all the time.

the list for the ds games that are coming out for this year only has maybe 30 games.

but i guess you can sit back and keep wishing for your barbie and spongebob games to come outfor the ds.

have fun little girl.

here is the field commander killer:

notice I say killer because its based on actual ww2 historic battles unlike a fictional conflict in field commander and you can pick mroe than just two sides, and it will be easier to use becasue of the stylus:
http://ds.ign.com/articles/708/708466p1.html

combine that with a level maker and online play just like field commander.

also most of those psp games shown on e3 like final fantasy and metal gear will also be pushed back to 2007 considering they only showed 3 screen shots of final fantasy crisis core.

 » XBL

Is awesome, where are you guys getting this 12 year old nonsense? I will occasionally meet some 10 year-old nerd in H2 who thinks he's pro but really sucks, but that's about it. Last night I met some 9 year-old who got scared and cried when I cussed, so why everyone hates on XBL and says it's filled with "bratty 12 year-olds" I don't know.

Hmm, I cant help but think that maybe the PSP would be selling better if Sony were not trying to eliminate homebrew. Damn nazis

 » G2 vs G3

Sony's PS2 sales are nearly equal to the next gen XBOX360.

As we all know new consoles are sold at a loss, but i assume the ps2 actually turns a dollar by now. What's the point? Sony need not release a new console, they could sit on their hands and watch the money roll in.

yea ok fanboy. at least we have a real online community! your just said that u suck balls at online. even my boss plays 360 and loves it. and hes been playng games since a while back. you will not be dissapointed with the 360, especialy at the end of this year. oh and gears of war comes out soon. :)

so yea, before you start posting crap, why dont u go play splitscreen with your parents in their basement. i have a psp and the online community isnt really a community. i use it for hacks, gta, and occasional multiplayer with friends. otherwise, its my mobile entertainment device.

 » i dont think

any of the portable systems (ds or psp) are gonna die ANYTIME soon because they serve two different bases, although they are in competition they are both safe because if you want graphics and functionality your gonna buy a PSP, but if you want a bigger selection of games and more battery life (since I guess some ppl apparently play their portable 12 hours in a day) then ull get a DS. Not to mention the game selection from both is completely different, to me looking at the DS games makes me feel like im playing games from year ago but some people love them and hate the psp games cuz they are "ports"

sorry but i have the list in front of me ya as$clown.

i do know how many are coming out for the rest of the year and it is not even close to 100. maybe if you add up all the crappy xbl arcade games that they will release also.

that 100 is what they have in DEVELOPEMENT for the system not for what is going to come out this year. yea they keep adding onto the list, but you will not see alot of those games anytime soon.

same with that crap list for the ds.

and yes strangler you probably are one of thos kids that run around here that is anywhere between 12 - what 17 maybe?

just b/c yo think you are cool, doesn't mean that others here think the same.

p.s stop complaining for once and enjoy something besides your collection of online porn.

I think homebrew may be coming back to the PSP - officially that is, now that Homebrew has been confirmed by Sony for the PS3 .. which means ... ZOMG WOOOOOOO!!!! ... ahem -

"As we all know new consoles are sold at a loss, but i assume the ps2 actually turns a dollar by now. What's the point? Sony need not release a new console, they could sit on their hands and watch the money roll in."

exactly, the ps3 release will actually lower the ps2 sales since it will be abckward compatible, and judging by sony's e3 presentation adn the fact its overpriced why not wait a year for the technology to catch up at a better price? why not actually make the psp good instead of a ps2 port box? if its gonna have ports at least port good games liek metal gear solid 2 +3, devil may cry series, final fantasies, etc.

you mean like the crappy psp homebrew release don lua constantly? I mean ever since squarez and the vector wars ripoff, have there been any good psp homebrew (games not emulators or apps)?

 » funny...

I like the curiously unnamed/unregistered person's line that the DS "only has maybe 30 games".

The only thing on the PSP I'm stoked for is MGS Portable Ops. To a somewhat lesser degree I'd like to play Lumines II and Every Extend Extra but I'd never pay full price for either of those. Lumines II will really only be more skins and a possibly online play (uncomfirmed). And I've had the original Every Extend on my computer for close to two years now and the PSP version is really only cosmetically different.

As far as the DS, theres a good 15 games I'm looking forward to.

Thank god for homebrew apps.

 » I dont see...

much reason to buy a Ps3 nothing on it is original, everything about the system is a rippoff, it seems as though they just pull things out of their ass at the last second, and most of the games will be multiplatform, the only game I will want on it is MGS4 and most of the MGS series has had a low replay value and at $600 for the console and maybe $70 a game it just doesnt seem worth it, they havent done a good job of making it a must have console so therefore I think it can wait...for a while...

360 has great games coming like lost planet, the darkness, prey, dead rising, moto gp 06, R* table tennis, and a bunch that I am probably forgetting, not to mention all the ones that I want that have already been out, thank God I have a job

JCP, have u played these games you claim that are so great? final fantasy, gt, mgs, tekken going multiplatform? no...you must be talking about the gay GTA series or sports games. the games listed for the 360 will obviously come out with rigged scores and no one will buy them, just like the last games that were on the first XBOX. Halo 3 will come out eventually and reign king, right behind MGS4. you can only do so much with FPS, and that's the truth.

Strangler, I'm a DS fan. I prefer it to the PSP. Some would call me a "fanboy" because the PSP doesn't interest me in the slightest. But I must ask you to stop this torrent of horrible comments because it actually makes DS fans look bad. Really. Look back on what you've said and you'll understand. Also, if you're goign to post a list of upcoming games, take the crappy titles out. Most of that list is solid... but Happy Feet? Come on....
