Again, here be more "bad" news regarding PSP sales. Don't lose your cool though despite this post having shades of the repetitive annoyance of "Sony Hate" news you so rampantly see on the internet, there's something a bit bright in this one. You just have to focus your perception a bit.

In a report at ITworld.com detailing Sony's surprise at the faster-than-expected dwindling of sales of the PSP (something this post will avoid going into) there are a few nice quotes that offer something promising. Hiroshi Kamide, director of the research department at KBC Securities Japan said this:

If you look at the availability of software, there are a lot of games for the PSP but are not particularly successful. You don't see any million-seller games for the PSP but you do hear about them for the Nintendo DS. The big problem is that while it's a wonderful-looking machine with a great display, the games are not so different from those you play at home on the PlayStation 2. Most of the software is knock-offs of PlayStation 2 titles and that won't do Sony any favors

Yes you've heard opinions like this before, but here's something you don't usually read on the internet. This is what Robert Wiesenthal, chief financial officer of Sony Corporation of America, said:

Clearly on the software side, any real killer title will galvanize the sales. There have been a number of titles that have been terrific, but not the one title that defines the product.

What's so bright about this? What exactly is it about Wiesenthal's statement that is so contrary to online sentiment about Sony? It is this: Sony is actually almost outright agreeing with the critics. And we all know that the very first step you take in solving a problem is acknowledging that it exists, and identifying what it is.

Is Sony showing evidence of humility in the face of online criticism that they are being big and bullying and arrogant? One definitely hopes that they are. One also absolutely wishes for all those unique games to be made/released, well, not that the new GTA isn't out already, but you know what we meant.

» well.. that's good to hear..

but let's see them actually do something about it.

   Re: trustnone (Unregistered) - 2006-10-29
» They can do a lot.

There are many options for sony here, if they w
choose to implement them.

They need to ackonwledge the developers.
Although sony considers their efforts
wrong etc etc they are actually satisfying the
needs of the community that apprently sony
doesnt.
I know many of you will cry' ISO's but hey: Thats
just illegal.
But homebrew scene needs to be acknowledged
And if sony can provide such apps to users they will surely see a jump in their handheld sales.

Please someone get me the violin for this Lik-sang crybaby, he doesn't want to move on in this life. People can sue Sony and the hater public says "oh Sony deserves it!" but when Sony rightfully sues someone they have been warning for a long time they say "Bad Sony, evil company!".

 » Hmm

I think Sony would prefer the money from the lawsuit over your owning of their consoles (which you already bought, so it's no loss to them anyway...).

I agree with the dude above me..

After they shut down lik-sang I no longer have respect for Sony, and hence do not care if PSP sales are low.

My respect for sont has dwindled over the years.

Clsoing Lik-sang was enough, but then demanding legal fees from them? sad.

» and to think i bought the psp at launch

THIS new gTa will be the one that sales the psp!
forget that one last year,i'm sure they added online multiplayer this year in order to...

umm...what?
they didn't add online multiplayer to vice city stories?

well okay...
we got MGS Portable Ops...
when ever they bring it out,it should be great to pay $50 for a game that came for free with MGS3:S that was a degree above horrible.

ok,i got it...
we have the Ps1 emulation!!!
$15 a game for games that came out a decade ago and look worse than nDS games and lack some buttons...

but we shall over come!
just like the Germans in world war 2,we shall prevail!

what? the germans lost?

well...pin a rose on your nose...
but superiour technology always wins,right?
clearly the ps2 was more powerful than the xbox or gamecube and...
oh it wasn't?
then why would sony try and sell us on the fact that the psp is more powerful than a ds?

well they made the games region free so everyone in the world can go anywhere and enjoy psp games...
even though oddly enough they'll sue you if you do...

psp if not for the homebrew would be the worst system ever.even the dreamcast did better.(saturn, gamecube, game gear...you name it)

amazing how on launch day for psp i walked in and picked up one of 30 or more where my DS i was 1 of 2 at the 4th store i went to.

hey did sony ever mention that even though the PS1 library is huge and they have great games they actually have to get the companies to agree to it? and that anything outside Ridge Racer is just a rumor?
Go Jumping Flash! Warhawk! and Twisted Metal!

» Well the article is right.

PSP games are usually just PS2 knockoffs. And the unique ones could just as easily have been made for PS2 (i.e. "MGS portable ops" could be made for PS2 if sony wanted to but I'm sure they want to make it exclusive). At least the NDS games are unique and have a touch of innovation to them.
I have both systems and I like both. I still love my psp since its makes ps2 games portable plus the homebrew scene is very active so there's always new surprises.
It's also better at movies and mp3 playing than the NDS... but then again my cell phone does that stuff too. The lack of innovation is probably what allowed the psp to be overtaken by the DS.

 » Too little, too late

Sony is getting what they deserve. They are so hell bent on it being the multimedia device and they don't utilize it with the games. Out of God knows how many games that are ports and uniques one that are out, only a hand few are online compatible. It does make for good MP3 player.

People who hate Sony for whatever reason and/or say "I don't care about what happens to them" should not post in a Sony product related website in the first place because it shows they DO care for Sony after all. Gotta love irony. Posting hater crap just shows how ignorant those people really are. Go carry that hater crap somewhere else (be Nintendo, Microsoft or any other non-Sony website like Engadget). Thank you.

Hating Sony is still caring smartass who posted directly above me.

I am personally bitter at Sony for the three PS2's I had to buy and the fas tthat their other electronics have lost quality as well. Especially TV's. Oh yeah and their a company based in Japan so they can't even get patriotic points.

» If it were not for homebrew & Devhook ;) .......

I would have sold my psp a loooooong time ago! It's sad, but true. But, the sentiments of many here are practically the same on these issues. It takes MORE than 'superior' hardware to win a handheld race. Atari learned that the hard way back when they were bragging about how powerful the Lynx was vs the lowly monochrome green gameboy.

Tetris, singlehandedly sold more little green Gameboys than all of the Lynxs combined! Sony MUST take cues from history if they want to succeed. They also need a stronger 'quality control' policy on the projects that actually go out the door. Nintendo games are good(most) lol because they enforce such policies.

Sony also needs to take true advantage of the hardware like the DS has. Nintendo has taken FULL advantage of the ds through, Brain Games, Cooking Games, Recipe Makers, Music Games, and of course regular games that make NEW uses of the hardware.

I would Like to see this for the PSP:

Music Sequencer - Like a 'baby' ProTools or Music composition software

RPG & Strategy Games - There is a real lack here in both quality AND quantity!

More 'Application' type content - How are you gonna sell a product geared towards young 'adults' and not atleast have PDA on the handheld?

More Educational Content - No. Not that Reader Rabbit crap either. But, what Nintendo does with it's games. Games that teach everything from Cooking to Stock Markets all in good fun. People like to learn and they like to have fun too.

Last, All Sony has to do is take cues from what is ACTUALLY SELLING!

A rep needs to go over to gamefaqs and look at what is sticking in the top 5 games in the charts. Monster Hunter has been glued to the #1 spot for almost a year! There's a clue! Make more games like this. Add some of the Everquest magic that made THAT game sell like crack, and voila! Killer app is made!

You gotta have an intimate connection to what your customers want AND successfully deliver in order to succeed.

» Good that you LOOK for the silver lining...

Actually, in terms of videogame hardware, admitting that there's a problem, and particularly that it's a BIG ONE, like dwindling sales of something you put a lot of money into developing and marketing, with the intention of conquering or taking a chunk out of a market you haven't really explored before, is kind of a BAD THING. If you look back, it's kind of a sign of "We're just going to go ahead and lie down and DIE," if you look at other videogame company history. Sega traditionally dumped a system and moved on, quickly, when this happened. They're a bit of a different case, since their business model did NOT involve attempting to "milk" a generation of technology, but, rather, abandoning it before it got "stale." Nintendo, upon making statements involving failures like Virtual Boy and RELATIVE failures, like N64, was usually gearing up to make a hardware jump or abandon a system. Since Sony doesn't really have a history of ADMITTING problems, I'd take it as a pretty BAD sign that they're acknowledging the situation. It rings of, "We made some mistakes, THAT TIME," in a very past tense kind of way. I don't know why we're always so concerned about the possible (and eventual) death of the PSP, commercially, though, anyway, because we DO have this whole awesome homebrew community going, and, if you think about it, the PSP IS still pretty young. Even if commercial games and product updates like those lovely new firmwares and fairly unnecessary peripherals (how many of us are actually concerned about that camera or really feel that we NEED a GPS for our game system?), imagine the developments that'll come from the homebrew scene in years to come. Look at the Dreamcast! Actually, if Sony didn't devote so much attention to crippling our ability to run unsigned code on their device, developers would like be spending a lot less time cracking firmwares and a lot more time creating innovative homebrew software.

 » check this

people kill me with the flip screen ***** that is gay and takes away from the look and feel of the PSP. I want the GPS and camera for my PSP and I like the games. The one thing they need to really focus on is a connection between the PSP and TV that allows you to use a PS2 controller with the PSP. That makes it a console, media center, and portable unit - which is something I totally dig.

All you haters need to stop. Also, homebrew is good for people learning to program games or be creative, but it is an abused term for many reasons. Most homebrew people are into downloading ISOs and not paying for games - that is very bad for their revenue and the game developers. Name other consoles/portable systems that allow you to develop your own games???? None really - although there is a few programs (legal) for creating custom games, most will require your system to be modded, which again is not legal. So with that shut up about homebrewing SAVING Sony and the PSP - it would not - it would take away revenue from them and the game developers.

   Re: whatnever (Unregistered) - 2006-10-29
 » check that

"Most homebrew people are into downloading ISOs and not paying for games"

Or most homebrew people like the fact that the best software available for PSP IS homebrew. Which is why you are posting to a PSP homebrew site. Complaining about homebrew?

Wtf dude? seriously!

 » i love you Ian C.

Mostly because we Share the same first name and last initial but anyways, extremely impressed at how you percieve the news. You're sort of the replacement Christopher C, bless his soul where ever he is.

It always struck me funny however that whenever someone made a exclusive big name title on the psp, the game always did extremely well (review wise.). Like Daxter, GTA, Syphon Filter, Loco roco, Brave Story, etc. But that's really it. I always thought the psp would be where all the rpgs are at. Doesn't look that way sadly--like FFXII spin off going to DS of all places!

If sony just asked some developers to make exclusive rpg or side scrolling titles then that will turn the psp sales around. Are you listening now Sony?
