ABK_Lotus Pod has just posted some pretty cool images on his newly received Chotto (PSP Camera).

BOTH TAKEN WITH THE CHOTTO

photo 2 photo

As you can see from these pictures, the quality of the images is very good. Since the screen is only 480x272 1.3 megapixels is all that is needed for good picture taking quality.

What We Know:

  • Camera requires 2.80 and comes with firmware update 2.82 on the Edit UMD.
  • A CHOTTO_SHOT folder is created in the VIDEO and PHOTO folders making it easy to transfer the media to your pc.
  • Videos are 15 seconds long and are saved in your Album on the Edit UMD you can enter your album and convert your videos to Motion JPEG (It says they are converted to AVI but their really converted to Motion JPEG.) After converting it will then add your video to the CHOTTO_SHOT folder in the VIDEO folder.
  • You must have the Edit UMD to take pictures or video without the UMD you can ot use the camera.
  • The Edit UMD is part English. The main things you need to know are in English but pretty much all the editing is Japanease but I got the hang of it very quickly and already remember what all the things do. Again its not hard its actually kinda fun finding out what everything means.
  • Also if you do get the camera and have difficulties finding out how to do thing PM me and I'll help you to the best of my knowledge.
FEATURES:
  • Camera has a mic so yes there is sound on the videos.
  • Has digital zoom.
  • Has a night mode for videos.
  • Has many special effects to add to your videos and photos to list a few you have background music, sound effects, can freeze reverse video, theres just soo many things to do when editing theres too many to list.

What it Comes With:
   1. PSP Camera
   2. PSP Camera Case (Hard Plastic)
   3. Editing Software (Half Japanease Half English Kinda Difficult Takes A While to Get Used To.)
   4. Software Manual (All Japanease), First Step Guide(All Japanease), and the Camera Attachment Instructions (Section for English)

Here are the rest of the pics:

i'll never buy it because i wont use it and i think most people wont use it, 1st because the psp's too big to take with you just for making vid's (a camcorder is smaller), second, it's it looks rediculous filming with that, and third i don't think anyone will even use it because what's the point of making vid's with your psp?

   Re: MGA_Roger (Unregistered) - 2006-11-07
 » IS IT!

A camcorder isn't that much smaller than a psp not to mention more expensive. Anything cheaper or + to the psp's price tag will undoubtly have sh*ty quality. This cam will be decent for people who just want to f*ck around with making small vid's without shelling out a whole lot of cash on something that may or might not really use seriously. Just for fun.

" what's the point of making vid's with your psp?"

Because you can.

 » Wow...

Liking it more and more. I'm thinking we should just keep on waiting, though - remember they've already found the PRX's in the 2.71 flash to run the camera, and if it's the software itself that chooses where the camera saves video files, maybe homebrew can catch up.
If homebrew doesn't before that baby's released in North America, though, I'm willing to sacrifice the homebrew... That's a nice addon indeed :D

How can those pictures be described as "good quality?"

   Re: Haanz (Unregistered) - 2006-11-07
 » Right on.

I hear that. Forget resolution, those images are grainy and horrible.

I'll stick with SE-B, thanks. Besides, my crystal flip lid uses the expansion screwholes anyway. I doubt it'd fit on the top.

My phone takes better photos than that.

we have a memory stick duo adapter. all u have to do is put ur psp memory card into the memory stick duo adapter put the memory stick duo adapter inside a camcorder and record whatever u want for longer than 15 seconds and very good quality. buying this is not just wasting ur money but ur wasting more money if u have a camcorder lying around.

I do say this is quite the disapointment. i was actually really looking forward to this, thinking it was a bargain.. but i'm loving it a lot less now, even though i won't have to upgrade i don't think i'll get it.

Canon powershot... Now that was a bargain, i'd recommend it to anyone instead of this, even though it's a few hundred dearer!!!

 » no way

if the only resolution you can go up to is 1.3megapixels than Im no way in hell buying that crap. what a waste of money! my cell phone is better than that. and that picture looks like *****!!!!!!!

   by mad_maniac - 2006-11-07
 » looks like my cellphone...

i'm guessing the quality is bad because of low light conditions. my 1.3mp phone takes good pictures outside, but indoors they look like this ones... and that's exactly the reason why i won't buy this cam riht now. i always carry my cellphone with me (has a 512mb sd card), so i don't need another 1.3mp camera. maybe i'll still buy it if some games make good use of it.

Erm...he PSP supports neither BHC or AVI...so you can't even watch the videos you make. What a f**king stupid thing to do, make it only export in unsupported formats. :S

Now, I feel one negative aspect of the PSP, not including developers not picking it up, is how Sony is approaching the PSP. They've largely focused on the PSP's multimedias features when it comes to firmware updates, and until recently with the demoes, they've done next to nothing to promote its gaming capabilities. We have the PS1 games, but that requires a PS3. We are getting too many ports, yet good original or remakes like Maverick Hunter X or Powered Up get brushed aside and end up getting the projects cancelled, resulting in a bigger void in this category. The multimedia features in effect, split the PSP owner community into people who get it for gaming, and those who get it its multimedia stuff primarily, and just use the gaming on the side and get random titles that are probably just multiplatform.

Developers can look at the PSP numbers and know that those don't mean that X million people actually game on it. On the DS, 2 million DS's means 2 million potential customers, as the DS is gaming only(yes there are additions to make it play music and videos and such, but they arent standard and are 3rd party. The Web Browser isnt here yet, and TV Tuner is Japan only since it uses a specific signal from there).

   Re: GaveUpTomorrow - 2006-11-07
 » ...

I don't believe that you need the PS3 to get PS1 games on the psp. That was initially stated, but was changed to say that you can download directly to your psp or to your ps3 then to your psp. That's the way I took it anyways, though the service for downloading straight to the psp may come out at a later time?

 » this could be useful

the only way this could be useful was if they had a video chat with this without an internet connection. just pop in a umd and then u could chat with friends and family. but if this ever happened they would make it so you have to upgrade. now if only we had booster to update his devhook.

just say "wat a cool device" and leave it at that
cuz i think everyone has a digital camera that takes much better photos. trust me i want to get this as well
but i know i'm going to regret it.
PSP already has tones of other stuffs
and 1.3megapixel is quite dissapointing

» This doesn't seem very useful.

Seriously, come on. This camera looks pathetic. Any phone camera will be have much better quality photos and video. 15 second videos are useless!

Can you really imagine yourself bringing your psp around with you when you go out, and whipping it out to take a magical 1.3 megapixel shot with no flash? Or how about a nice 15 second video. I don't think so.

Very unpractical.

   Re: GaveUpTomorrow - 2006-11-07
 » I don't think so..

Although I probably won't get one, I happen to take my psp everywhere I go. I am always in situations where I'd just like to get a shot of something, but I don't ever take my digital with me, so this would be useful for sure. Sure the images are small, but I don't think they look that bad at all. They are much better than half of the pictures I see on ebay.
   by OoZic (Unregistered) - 2006-11-07
 » crap

what a crappy thing....i'll take my Sony T7 camera if I want to take pictures, way smaller than my psp, better resolution, flash-light, zoom etc. and it uses also MS pro. Sony should have made a PSPusb to Pictbridge or Video In connector with driver so I can connect my camera to my PSP and watch the foto's/video's I've made on the larger PSP screen and use my camera as a kind of webcam when I am on the road and online with PSP Wifi.....but no, they think we are waiting for this. 15 seconds video is nice for a 6 year old kid, but not for me...

Well, I am waiting for the GPS for PSP for non-japanese users!!
Hurry up with that Sony if you want to make some money! And don't make it 2.80+ becouse I don't gonna give up my 2.71SE and buying another PSP only for GPS....no way!! I'll buy myself a PDA with GPS and TomTom if you do that Sony!!

Let the users enjoy their PSP (and I do for now) and don't try to force us into something we don't want
