Apple and the PSP

We really don't want to start a flame war, but offending comments like this is just too news-y to pass up. Time has a report on the launch of the Apple's iPhone, and within that lengthy report is this paragraph:

To witness the iPhone launch from behind the curtain (or under the towel) is to see the controlling hand of Steve Jobs, for whom this is an almost mystically significant year. He's 50 years old. It's been 30 years since he founded Apple (with Stephen Wozniak), and 10 since he returned there after having been fired. In that decade Apple's stock has gone up 1,000%. Neither age nor success (nor cancer surgery in 2004) have significantly mellowed him, though some of the silver in his beard is creeping into his hair. All technologists believe their products are better than other people's, or at least they say they do, but Jobs believes it a little more than most. In the hours we spent talking about the iPhone, Jobs trash-talked the Treo, the BlackJack, the Sony PSP and the Sony Mylo ("just garbage compared to this"), Windows Vista ("It's just a copy of an old version of Mac OSX") and of course Microsoft’s would-be iPod killer, Zune.

The iPhoneThe PSP and the Sony Mylo, garbage compared to the iPhone? To be fair, the Mylo might, and we stress, might, deserve a comparison with the iPhone since they're both in the same category of tech products. But to compare the iPhone to the PSP? Really now.

What? Are there supposed to be games of PS1 or higher quality set to be released for the iPhone? Will it be rigged to play DS games?

The iPhone is a very pretty and very savvy multi-functional handheld device that can be used as a phone. (Yes, we want one ourselves.) The PSP is a very pretty and very savvy multi-functional handheld device that can be used (or is primarily used) to play games, or given the homebrew community, used for a whole lot of things.

Garbage? Someone's being a bit too hasty, or a bit too boastful.

if vista is a remake of some old osx, why allow it to run on apple (boot camp)? allowing a competitor's os to be run on an apple is a company weakness so he has no right to thrash talk vista that way.

im surprised apple resorts to cheap marketing strategies to sell their products.

» actually, running the competitors OS is smart

Considering that most people hesitate buying Macs for the operating system and fear of it being harder, this encourages more people to use Macs.
I actually bought a Mac cause I knew that worst case scenario I could just run it as Windows. I'm in media and though Mac is the favored one in the industry, I still use Windows apps to get stuff done. I could not do this with a normal PC.
So the Mac and it's ability to handle it's competitors operating system actually gives it more of an edge.
And wasn't the PSP early on talking about possible phone usage?

but from what apple have on there site about the thing, the screen sounds awesome! twice as many pixels-per-inch than the psp, its screen is as high as the psp's is wide, and wider than the psp's is high... its bigger, sharper, and touchyerer!
no way i would trade in my psp for one, but i really really want to get one.

 » LOL

Comparing the PSP to the iphone is stupid. The PSP is a console and the iphone is just some ghey overpriced phone with a gimmick. I dont need a new $600 phone, the one i have is smaller and easier to carry AND my psp handles everything else I need just fine.

   Re: Jake (Unregistered) - 2007-01-11
 » I wouldn't consider the PSP a console...

in fact, Sony would prefer you not think of it as a handheld, so much as a multi-media portable. I think the comparison is valid, and I can't really say the iPhone has a gimmick. All handhelds that acts similiar to the iPhone have some sort of touch interface. Treo for instance.
You do make a good point with the price though, what we sort of have here now is a weaker/cheaper can do everything PSP and a stronger/pricier can do everything better iPhone. It'll be like the DS vs PSP. Cept switch the touch interface.
Though with the iPhone you get rid of having two devices as you pointed out. Which use to be the argument for people saying the PSP was great cause it can play music, watch videos, check email, play games and all in one device. So gimmicky? I can't agree. But the price is too far high, and even then, it's not that high considering other high end phones.

Re: some random guy (Unregistered) - 2007-01-11
 » re

stronger/pricier iphone? pricier maybe but stronger than psp. it depends what context you are talking in.

The psp does not even fall in the same category of portable electronics as the iphone. the iphone is a phone and the psp IS a console. as for media, the psp has the same to offer as the iphone. and as qj pointed out, you cannot play psx games on an iphone.

Also with the 32gig memory stick soon to be released, the psp will be pricier than the iphone, if not the same price.

 » Nonsense !!!

I would trade my psp right away for an iPhone!!!! And I'm on 3.03 oe-B, but the iPhone is going to cost WAY more than $199. Get a used psp and flash it, there are still alot of 2.71's>- out in the used boxes. Simple logic

» From where has left those words? I want sources.

First, sorry for my english, google translates from spanish (sigh...):
It is very easy to say that “somebody” has said “something”, but I doubt much that Steve Jobs has said that the PSP is garbage. From where has left those words? It sounds to me to that is “somebody said to me that Steve commented…” Rule number 1 of the media: check the sources.
Despite this, I Love apple, I Love PSP, and i Love iPhone... (and i Love you too, Miriam)

   Re: Erekiddo - 2007-01-11
» youre right about the source but....

youre right he certenly never said that psp was garbage but he didnt tell that apple products are not that cool..... in fact there not at all......with a high price compared to any similar products....i cant see why apple products would be "cooler" just because they have always way too simple basics controls....fact is this apple offers a great visual show, microsoft brings us hardware performance, sony tries to do so and Nintendo is always on lead (to me) with all sorts of gadget they know we really want....

   Re: jake (Unregistered) - 2007-01-11
 » It's all convenience.

People want the simplest, easist way to get enjoyment. Apple, when designing anything (OS, iPod, Hardware, and now the iPhone) always aim for a high level of "ease of use".
With any MP3 player, you don't have a uniform way of getting music. It might come with it's CD full of apps to rip music, and even tell you where to legally download music. But then you factor in the compatibility. Maybe the CD also gives you a audio convertor so everything works with your player. And it's own media manager to boot.
But with the iPod, you get just iTunes. And it's that relationship that makes the iPod so dominant in the market. The program will rip your CDs. It has access to the store where every song, regardless of what the RIAA wants, will be 99 cents or 10 bucks a CD. And when you bring in your own music, iTunes will not only add it and organize it, but convert it to AAC if need be. It's less work on the consumer. That's it's appeal. And you pay for convenience. That's why a friggin gallon of milk costs almost 1-2 bucks more at a convenience store.
Cool is just a matter of opinion, but to the real reason why these products became dominant is for their consumer design. Popularity of a item just tends to follow afterwards.

 » ...

Surely he must mean the features the iPhone and the PSP (without homebrew) has incommon like music and video playback, image viewing and internet browsing and in those areas I'm sure the PSP will be crap in comparison.

The iPhone won't play any games though, atleast they haven't announced that it will, which is what most people who have a PSP use it for.

   by LOL (Unregistered) - 2007-01-11
 » iPhone is gay

i don't know about others, but i don't want to be carrying a brick in my pocket as a phone. My slips in and out of my jean pocket nicely because it's compact and light. It's a phone...Making it into all these other bullcrap features the iPhone will have is just useless. For people like me in Australia, only 1 network is going to support the 2.5G network that the iPhone uses (i think) and the network is total scum. So really, this piece of $600 crappy hardware is a total rip off.
The PSP on the other hand, I don't mind that it's big. It just means i get a bigger screen. If the iPhone supports playing games (decent games which I doubt it will), then it can have some comparison to the PSP. Otherwise...

 » Job's the old fart

Dude is old and needs to head over to the glue factory.

He's shooting off words to drum up press for his new gadget.

PSP is in a whole different category. It's a portable game machine not a freaking over-priced phone with a screen that will probably break like his lovely video I-Pod's did when they first came out.

Japan and Korea has way cooler phones that never make it to this market I wonder how he'd do marketing that thing over there. I bet they'd laugh him out of the country.

Western countries lag behind because our infrastructure sucks and cell phone companies don't give a damn as long as we continue to give them money for antiquated service and technology since we have no choice.

 » Cell phones

Hey,

I've been living in Japan for 2 years now. Just so no one has the wrong idea, there are a lot of phones that come out in north america that are truly more capable than any phones I've seen here.

The majority of the phones here are basically beta's since there is a new model out every 3 - 6 months. The phone I bought when I arrived is a Sharp 902SH. The follow up versions of this phone not counting the 903SH have gotten progressively worse.

The main reason we don't get any of the north american and mainly good sony ericsson phones in Japan is either they don't want to convert it to the 3G networks or... they think they can't compete with a bad phone with a 3 megapixel camera in it.

Ya I know I'm way off topic...

I think the PSP and the iPhone would make interesting babies... ones I could be willing to buy. Just gotta make the screen to be able to roll up to reduce the size of it. Use your imagination...

 » Jobs is probably right

The quote is a bit out of context, so probably looks inflammatory.

The point Jobs made was that the iPhone is all about usability of the interface and converging various technologies in the easiest way for users.

On that point, all of the mentioned devices (including PSP) are garbage in comparison to the iPhone.

Just try browsing the Web or typing anything on the PSP - it's a ballsache at best.

So in terms of converged technologies and inteface design, iPhone beats them all hands down.

Of course the PSP is a great games machine. And the iPhone isn't (yet!). But that wasn't his point, so flamewar over I guess.

 » Dude

Dude, are you serious?

1st off, how hard is it to type or surf the net on the psp? Is it really that hard to type with a keyboard like that? If so, you shouldn't be using the console to surf the net in the first place.

Secondly, Interface design? haven't you noticed, the XMB of the psp can't be anymore friggin simpler?

Thirdy, you said that iPhone isn't a great games machine (yet), how do you know that? Do you know the specs of the iPhone? Have you seen homebrew on the iPod? I think i'll go back to playing on my SNES.

Lastly, How convient is the iPhone? How convient do you want it to be? Do you want the iPhone to talk for you as well? Would you like it to play music without you touching a single button? You'll need a Psycommu for that

» not greated for the same reason

The psp and the Iphone were not created for the same reason.

Convergence has been a buzz word for a long time.

It is only natural the Apple goes and makes an Iphone. Look a what Motorola, Samsung, Nokia and the rest have been making for the last few years.

The Iphone has no innovative features. It just has better packaging, nothing more... and a bigger price tag.

The psp is a gaming device with media functions.

Now the next battle is ALL ALL ALL in one ultimate portable devices.

The next 2 years we will see the battle start.

Apple, Microsoft, Sony, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola will all try to make the ultimate portable all in one device.

Gaming
Online gaming
Transactional device
Web
Wireless
Phone (cell or maybe VOIP with wifi)
PDA
Media
GPS
Wireless charging

And what ever the future may hold

The war has been declared by the players.

Lets see who shall win the war...

iphone by apple is nothing new at alll. the iphone just copy the treo, the new samsung coming out before the iphone, the ppc6700.... and i dont see how on earth u can compare the iphone with the psp. the only thing the psp is not made for is to work as a cell phone. come on i cant even write it make no sense, is like comparing a tv with a rock.
the psp the treo the ppc6700 and a bunch of other things are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better in what they do and have wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more features. example, the new treo and ppc6700 by sprint are both excellent and superior cell phone than the iphone, they both play any ANY type of media file and they both are extremely reliable and last forever. if u compare the spec with the iphone, the iphone by apple is trashh.. $600 for a 8gb iphone?????
the treo and ppc both have expansion slot both have gps, and now we got 8gb on a tiny mini memory card and coming soon the 32gb this yr.

I feel bad for anyone who buy the iphone. apple has never made a cellphone and not to mention how reliable every single ipod are, except the nanos.

I get tired of people saying how good apple is and yes it is good to an extent. Using it myself at various times, it's always a ***** to find things that cooperate flawlessly and what not with the OS. The Ipod is the best thing apple's got and it will probably always dominate the mp3 player market but as for phones and such, they will land on their face. The psp isn't a phone so there is really no comparison but as for myself, I'd like the psp to play games and Homebrew and a freakin' cell phone to call people on, jeez... just another way to get thousands upon thousands out of consumers.
