Ó

Let's take a break from the usual conversational tone we have here at QJ when it comes to posts, and let's get, for the lack of a better term, "stiff." Moreover, just in case you're wondering, there's a punchline at the end of this in the form of a video. The punchline er, hook, isn't really meant to be funny, just mildly amusing. Also if you're going to be quick to complain with something akin to "what? This is supposed to be news?" Do not fret; this post is listed in off-topic.

Okay, we suppose it is safe to assume that all of us are familiar with NASA World Wind right? In the unlikely-hood that you aren't here is a quick description of the program:

World Wind is an application developed by NASA for use on computers running Microsoft Windows. The program overlays NASA satellite imagery and United States Geological Survey aerial photography on a 3D model of the Earth, Moon and Mars. The user interacts with virtual planet by rotating it and zooming in and out. Overlays of political boundaries, five million place-names, and lines of latitude/longitude are included in the application.

Now that's out of the way, here's the punch: a video of somebody operating it using their PSP.

Well what do you think? Video fake or authentic modification? Anyway, let me degenerate a bit and end this article by saying: kewl, w00t w00t!

Could you do the same thing with portable VNC?

But if you did that you'd see it on the PSP display as well. (As long as the video display of the software does not work in as an "overlay" system.) Things like DVD/Video Media players work like this. If the NASA software works in overlay mode to display it's info on your screen, then the VNC setup would just show a back screen on the PSP in any parts that actually display the map content. Anything that's not in overlay mode (like menus and such) would still display properly on the PSP. This is one of the reasons why you can't use VNC for PSP to display videos to your PSP which are actually playing on your VNC server's screen. With all that said, it really just looks keyboard/mouse controls being sent to the laptop via the PSP. There's nothing really special there... the software (if real) for the PSP that does this could easily be tailored to do that with any software running on the PC. It's basically VNC without the video display... in a way.

It is fake.

Use your eyes people.

At the very end, he lifts his hand away for a second.

All that is flashing is the Memory Stick light, not the WLAN.

Are you saying the PSP can communicate without IR, WLAN or USB?

FAKE.

Everyone saying it is fake is retarded. This would be easier to actually do than to fake, WiFi remote is old news. If he faked it good for him, it would have taken twice as long to do. Who videotapes this anyways, its sorta lame.

He is just mindlessly hitting buttons, I dont think hes controlling it.

   by Hi (Unregistered) - 2006-10-29

Even I could do that too. you can easily have wireless keyboard or mouse on the back. and controll. or that could be video editing. easy..

» wow you are all wrong

YOu all are either children or just plain haters. The video is real. No one would take the time to make fake carp like that. You can use the PSP as a remote for just about anything if you still have the 1.5fw. Obviously this guy is good at programming so he can do what he does depite the beer belly.

He was not mindlessly controlling or button mashing. He did it to the effect of authenticity. If you follow he was using the analog stick to move the camera forward or back. He used the buttons to zoom in out and view the landscape from vertical to horizontal view. If you guys think it's fake. I seriously don't know how else to convince other than tell you to watch it again.

» its not fake, its just nothing...

he is not faking anything. he is sucessfully using wifi remote to control a program (thats what it is suposed to to, but shh dont tell anyone). u can see this as his wifi light is going crazy, he also put a earth wallpaper (not the non moving crosshairs in the top left of the screen).. I dont see what he is faking, his post on youtube is exactly what it says "World Wind remote control With PSP"... and to whoever above said that faking it would be harder, umm, no it wouldnt, you just have to know how to download and install haomebrew, plus alittle configuring.. trust me, coding something from scratch for this purpose would take longer (but also probably not hard as similar programs already exist, and the homebrew community shares sourcecode (for the most part)..

but all in all, Why wouldnt you just use the mouse or keyboard, u still ahve to look at the laptop monitor....

» It's not fake, but WHO CARES?!

Why would you want to turn on and waste the battery on your PSP when you could just use your keyboard/pointer? Seems kinda pointless to me. I DO think the Xbox Media Center remote idea is cool. I also used the Wega remote ONCE when my tv remote was MIA.. It was found the next day and my eboot was quickly deleted.

With Wificontroller, ppJoy and progs like Joy2Key you can controll almost anything on your pc. But about this one, the pic is just a stand still, has nothing to do with World Wind.
