Canadian hardware, software sales: NPD Group spills game industry numbers for September 2007 - Image 1The NPD Group has just released the retail sales numbers of Canada's video game industry, and for the month of September, hardware sales of the Microsoft Xbox 360 have jumped to 51,200 units. The rise was attributed to the September 25 release of Bungie Studios' Halo 3, published by Microsoft. Over all, the game industry was reported to have met a 96% increase in total sales from US$ 66.2 million to US$ 129.7 million, year on year.

Throughout the retail sale categories that the NPD report covered, console hardware sales have more than doubled for the month alone, confirming Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter's prediction. The revenue hit a high of 244% from US$ 13 million in September last year to US$ 44.7 million in September this year.

With it, console software sales rose 79% year-on-year, from US$ 27.8 million to US$ 49.9 million in revenue. Handhelds in contrast performed in the lowest margins, though both software and hardware revenue increased according to NPD's numbers.

Handhelds sold in the nation hiked up 29% from US$ 9 million in September last year to US$ 11.7 million this year, while handheld video games rose by a slim 2% from last year - US$ 9.5 million to US$ 9.7 million. The hardware sales ranked by most unit sales for the month of September stood as:

  • Microsoft Xbox 360 - 51,200
  • Nintendo DS - 45,000
  • Nintendo Wii - 42,900
  • Sony PSP - 2,200
  • Sony PS2 - 16,500
  • Sony PS3 - 15,600
  • Nintendo GBA - 8,600
The top 10 video games for September 2007 ranked by most unit sales are:
  • Halo 3 (Developed by Bungie Studios, published by Microsoft Game Studios for Xbox 360) - 135,000
  • NHL 08 (Developed by EA Canada, published by Electronic Arts for Xbox 360) - 54,500

Once again, Nintendo triumphs over Sony. Long live Nintendo! (even if those fascists do make modding nearly impossible)

Wow that's nearly a 400% sales increase in 360 hardware over the last 2 months.

All you can say here for this 360 sales spike is " Wow that's nearly a 400% sales increase in 360 hardware over the last 2 months.", even though you know the spike is temporary because of the Halo juggernaut.

For a similar sales spike for the PS3 in the UK (story title: "Sony's PlayStation 3 sales rise 178 percent due to new models, price drop"), you commented, " Well the US had a rise of 135% after the 60GB price cut, and we all know how long that lasted."

You know just as well as anyone that just like the PS3 sales spike, this 360 sales spike is not going to last forever either, yet, biased fanboy that you are, you chose to ignore that.

Well, that proves once and for all that you are a biased hypocrite whose posts regarding the PS3 are biased bu1l5hit.

Me saying Wow + sarcasm. This statement was said in reference to those that criticized my comments in the PS3 thread. I don't usually comment on sales figures. I knew some Sony fanboy would bite.

Yes and your not biased, your too funny. Your name calling just highlights your discomfit of criticism of your precious console. The 178% increase story is lame, my comments were justified.

New facts just in: 90% of the 178% were 60GB consoles. This provides it was just a people rushing to get the backwards compatibility. Why did Sony exclude it from the 40GB? Jack Trenton's says ... drum roll ... so PS3 owners buy PS3 software.

"I don't usually comment on sales figures"
As I recall, after Constantinecy, you were the first one to comment on the Sony 178 percent story with your fanboy dribble. That kind of gives the lie to your statement here about you not commenting on sales figures, you know.

"I knew some Sony fanboy would bite."
I doubt you have the strategic foresight to lay a verbal/written trap. You are just making this up as you were caught with your pants down :).

By the way, yes, MY PS3 console is precious to me. After all, I spent upwards of 675 dollars on it (with an additional Controller and BR Remote). Also, my XBox 360 is precious to me as well. After all, I spent upwards of 500 dollars on it (with the 100 USD Wi-Fi peripheral). As such, I believe I am in a position to speak out on both consoles. You, my friend, on the other hand, just own the 360 and are bashing the PS3 BECAUSE YOU DO NOT OWN ONE.

As for the name-calling, I call it as I see it. When I see people like you using double standards, I express my opinion of what you are doing without reserve. You were being a hypocrite, so I believe I was justified when I called you one.

"The 178% increase story is lame"
From your (a devout 360 fanboy) perspective, any story showing PS3 in a good light must be lame. That is hardly an unbiased opinion. And no wonder you consider your opinions justified - you see the gaming world through 360-green lenses.

"90% of the 178% were 60GB consoles."
So what? Does that negate the fact that the Consoles WERE sold? If the Consoles WERE sold, how does that solidify your argument? Stop being silly!

The story was lame because it reported no sales figures for the PS3 or the other platforms.

I don't usually comment on Sales figures. The last PS3 price cut only gave Sony a 1 month sales spike before sales dropped back to poor levels. I'm surprised people are easily fooled again. I passed one side of an argument and people response, that's how a blog works.

Here, I provided the percentage increase in my comment to make the direct reference to the PS3 thread. I thought that was obvious. I knew fanboys that posted on the PS3 thread wouldn't like it and I was actually expecting some PS3 boys to say that sales will go down after Halo 3, and it's only a spike. Just like I said in the PS3 thread. Oh wait, whats this.

"You know just as well as anyone that just like the PS3 sales spike, this 360 sales spike is not going to last forever either, yet, biased fanboy that you are, you chose to ignore that."

Bait taken. That comment isn't much different than the one I made in the PS3 thread.

Sorry I forgot that I needed to own a PS3 to make any negative comments about it, silly me. My friend owns a PS3 and I've played his, does that count? LOL.

I think my comments lighten things up anyway. If people disagree they are free to comment. There's no real malice behind my comments, just a point on view from my perspective. If you don't like it, bad luck.

"Bait taken. That comment isn't much different than the one I made in the PS3 thread."
-> Yep. It's not much different from the one you made. The reason is that it was derived from your flamer post on the PS3 article. So what does that say about you?

"My friend owns a PS3 and I've played his, does that count? LOL"
-> Well, here's the thing. You don't own a PS3. You own a 360. As such, you have most of your ego and pride (as regards Consoles) invested in the 360 doing well and the PS3 doing badly, and it reflects in 99 percent of your posts. So your comments are not truly impartial, and your perspective is well, not to put too fine a point on it, biased, which is why I call you out.

Other posters like Unreg and Games4James say unflattering things about the PS3 from time to time. However, their viewpoints are mostly fair and balanced, not tipped way on the 360 side like yours. That is the only reason I called you a hypocrite. I get no pleasure out of insulting others.

"There's no real malice behind my comments, just a point on view from my perspective."
I'm not accusing you of malice. It's a usual reaction for people to start their thought process in the following order: I, and then Mine. As such, people start investing their ego in concepts like family, friends and property. As such, your offensive reaction to the PS3 doing well and your defense of all things 360 is understandable, but it speaks of immaturity.

Anyway, I don't think you are ever going to be able to see things from other people's perspective, so what's the point? Keep believing that you are a brilliant strategist who knows how to lure people, keep believing that the 360 is God's gift to humans, keep believing whatever you want. I give up.

 » no surprise

nothing or surprise here. We all knew Halo 3 would help the 360 trump the wii. Moreover, this is Canada. it's of no surprise whatsoever to see sony so far down. Since the launche of the first xbox Microsoft has seen better sales in canada than sony.

Still, nice to see the PSP still hanging in there. :)

 » wtf?!?

WTF is that? the GBA is much more selling than the PSP?!?

What's going on there?

 » Mistake

I think its typo in PSP's sale figure, It should be 22000 according to decreasing order and 22000 should be obvious after slim launched.
