Next Gen Console race Banner - Image 1

The NPD date for the month of May is now out, and as expected Rockstar North's opus Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox 360 version) is still on top of the software charts, towering over Nintendo greats such as Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit .

On the hardware side of things, the Nintendo Wii is still on top (again, as expected), but the most surprising thing in May's results is that the PlayStation 3 managed to gain an upper hand over the Xbox 360, albeit over a slight margin. This is quite the change compared to last month's NPD numbers, where the Xbox 360 maintained a marginal lead over the PS3 by less than ten thousand units.

All of the consoles managed to sell less units compared to what was expected this month. The Nintendo Wii scored 675,100 units, which is just a few ten thousands short of its projected 722,300 sales numbers. The DS came in next with 452,600, and then Sony's PS3 with 208,700. Both the Xbox 360 and the PSP ended up last in the race, scoring 186,600 and 182,300 units sold, respectively.

As mentioned earlier, Grand Theft Auto IV for the Xbox 360 managed to secure its place in the number one position in May's best-selling software charts with 871,300 units sold, beating even Mario Kart Wii by almost a hundred units. Wii Fit, contrary to its apparent popularity with the intended market, came in at third with 687,700 units sold - a few hundred thousand short of its 1 million mark.

Check out the charts below to see how your favorite console/popular title is faring:

Just wanna see the xbox360 sales compared to the ps3 and sale of metal gear.Should be impressive

The x360 is still the winner since they sold twice the amount of GTA4 copies. Still, the ps3 is placing itself in a better position than what guys like patcher were betting, and they were alsso betting that the ps3 would win in 2k9. Still, I'm sceptical for the ps3's options. I mean, square-enix just annonced that star ocean 4 would pop on the x360 first, same for the last remnant, and they are popping an exclusive action RPG for the xbot as well... This could help M$ to take over japan. Still, I suppose that the final fantasy will destroy every JRPG M$ can get, but I want those other JRPGs! So me, a super big fan of sony, and playstation, is thinking about buying a chipped x360 (350$ chipped and tested), so this is a bad news for the every dude that are not fanboys like me. (I also like nitnendo, but less, I'm more hardcore). I just hope that MGS4 and the finals will get more devs to make games on the ps3!, or port current JRPGs on the ps3, like eternal sonata.

How can it be? PS3 cost more, and has no piracy.... Unbeliaveble! Maybe Microsoft should think about a new price cut...

at least ps3 and x360 hasn't been killed by piracy like the psp

Both 360 and PS3 sales are horrible when you take into account that the most successful console franchise (outside of mario) was released at te end of the previous month. GTA IV should of moved much more hardware then it did. What the hell is going on?

Well done to the PS3, but really the Wi's sales are a huge danger to our industry. Nintendo is make too much money of a crap console for Sony and MS to ignore. Luckly 360 software is picking up the slack.

Go Wii!
Its kicking xbawks and PStripples ass. And look how many games Nintendo has on the top charts. Nintendo are destroying!

Yup! I can't believe Mario Kart Wii is outselling PS3 GTAIV and so close to the 360 version. Incredible! But it's not hard to understand really if you've played Mario Kart online. It's more addictive than anything else I've ever played. If only they let you change karts/characters without having to quit :(

And did you know there are still people who think Nintendo will fall, Nintendo will go the way of Sega. Yea. Lol. With these hardware and software sales XDXDXD

» wii.... and ps3... arent amazing

the wii is garbage..... the only good game is smash brothers and thats because you dont have to use that stupid motion *****. all of their sales are exclusives and almost all of them suck. PS3 is alright.... but it has no good games and by the time it gets some this generation of consoles will be over. Xbox is the overall reigning champ and will be until this gen is over... the Wii may be winning in sales but... the only people who buy it are kids and losers and those two categories makes up a huge percentage of America. the Xbox 360 has a massive list of great games, alot of them even being 3rd party which is good they dont have to rely on their first party publisher, they can actually have other good games... plus they have the best accessories for any console, it has a great online service, and yea... who cares if it doesnt have bluray... dvds still look good on an hd setup... and the games dont even need that much space in this gen. People say that playstations online is alot better because its free..... would you rather have a *****ty service and pay nothing, or one thats actually good and pay 50 dollars a year (im sorry but thats not expensive.. if you can afford one game a year you can afford xbox live).

and i have mario kart. it is not that great of a game. it just sells so much because it has mario in the title and wii owners need something to buy

Best comments ever:

1. the Wii may be winning in sales but... the only people who buy it are kids and losers and those two categories makes up a huge percentage of America.

2. [Mario Kart] just sells so much because it has mario in the title and wii owners need something to buy

Thank You! Im tired of ****ing Wii Fankiddies trolling around "The wii kicks the PS3 and the Xbox in the ***, its sooo much better and innovative..."

No I'm playing and loving Mario Kart Wii because it's an absurdly fun game to play. I've got about 8000 points online and that's when the fun starts, playing sub-5000 players is pointless and much too easy.

Best racing game so far this gen. Simple pure fun. Next purchase is Smash Bros when it's released in 2 weeks. Heh, I've bought more Wii games this gen than the other 2 systems combined. You can all talk about "not being enough Wii games" but if nothing appeals to you (just like your situation) then you won't buy them. I can only name 2 good games for the 360, none for PS3.

And I'd hardly call myself a child, especially considering I seem to have a better grasp of the English language than these claimed "mature people" who like "grown up" games. Ironic isn't it? Forget asking if anyone here has got their Masters yet, have you even finished school?

If you think Mario Kart is the best racer this gen you seriously must be on crack. Have you even played any other racing game? The wii is kid crap. Face it. There is nothing "awesome" about driving a go kart.

The PS3 sales are incredible, considering that MGS4 isn't even counted in yet. I think in June the PS3 will sell twice as much as the X360, just my bet though.

   by SuperQuest - 2008-06-13
 » Yess

I'm glad to see the PS3 getting stronger. With MGS4 june will be great again for the PS3

About the Wii ... i have one and only a few games are good , but it's not really a next gen console

   by Clixt - 2008-06-13
» PS2 is still going strong.....

100K+ software sales on ps2 means there's still a lot of guys using the ps2.. when those guys migrated to ps3, things might get great for sony...

 » no suprise

Of the "next gen" consoles we only have a Wii in our house. The biggest reason is as my kids get to an age where I can interact with them, playing "hi deff" games is the bottom of the list. I can pick up Mario Kart and try reasonably hard and still have the kids have a pretty good chance to win. We play teams. So I can race as hard as I can, and they get a combined score. This is something pretty close to impossible on the other systems. Their tiny hands are just too small to hold those big controllers.

I am NOT the only one in this situation, so its easy to see why the Wii is where it is! In fact, I was in a launch day lineup for my wii, and since then my parents have bought one, and ALL my brothers and sisters. My cousins bought one (after playing with ours) and as a result all his 5 sibings bought one as well. It should be noted that 2/3's of these people are NOT gamers, yet still find the wii to be fun. Its a great party system.

I have to admit though, I am VERY tempted to go pick up a MGS PS3 pack!! I even dreamt about going to find one today (if possible)

   Re: mercenarysolidsnake - 2008-06-13
 » you said it

the wii is more of a market for kids. the ps3 and xbox is more adult oriented. just look at the titles. i bought a wii for my wife and i have a ps3. and i don't really enjoy the wii much. i have been playing twilight princess and i find my self wishing i could just play it with a regular controler instead of the wii mote control. I really think that alot of people that are doing it as a fad, kind of a tickle-me-elmo thing, and you will find that alot of these wiis will end up sitting covered in dust.

» Math is not this blog's strong point.

"This is quite the change compared to last month's NPD numbers, where the Xbox 360 maintained a marginal lead over the PS3 by less than ten thousand units."

I think you mean less than one thousand units. I mean technically you are correct, but it makes the difference sound much larger than the tiny amount it was.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

WOW! 675,100 sales in ONE MONTH and that's US only.

675,100 versus 186,600. Wow! Only Nintendo can "fake" a shortage and still sell 362 percent MORE product then the competition....HAHAHAHA!!!!!!

I'm still waiting for the Wii fad to be over....HAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Anyway, these figures include vendor sales. So take 'em with a grain of salt.
