Maybe it means we're all downgrading and installing custom firmware so we can .iso's from the memory stick.
Things like DevHook and the custom firmware are designed for piracy, so no doubt there's a lot of people just doing that!
Another thing that I think might be a problem is that there's no way to currently hire a UMD (at least in New Zealand) and play it to see if you like it. Games are so expensive that you really want to demo them first!
Unless of course, you're pirating them.
Now I don't mean to suggest that *everyone's* pirating games, but people these days are so tech savvy that I'm sure it's a lot more rampant. Especially on the PSP where it's possible to install custom apps, there's no such joy on the other handhelds...
Cheers,
Tim
You bring a good argument, pirating does hurt game sales of course, BUT pirating is done on most consoles and to most games and software ANYWAY. So everyone is competing for that top 10 list while suffering from the same problems of piracy. In the end, it all factors down to price of game, and game quality.
Even though some of my friends pirate, they will still buy Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War, if and when it is released, to show tribute to a sweet game.
But for ppl like me who never intended to buy a single game at all since day we just add to the PSP hardware sales figures and give false hope for some stupid marketing guy in game company assume that if there are 100 PSP units out there there will be 100 ppl buying their game for the unit.
Yeah I pirate a couple game at the beginning, after summer of 2006 I don't even bother downloading anything. I am waiting for the GPS to come over and turn my PSP into GPS for my car plus watch a movie or 2 during driving.
Whether the game suck or not it is just entitled to personal opinion so I am not gonna give any lame excuse saying because they make crappy games that's why I don't buy them. I never ever intended to buy a single PSP since it was released. Never had, never will. For f*ck sake, I don't even bother playing pirates anymore.
it means that the PS3 is ubber crap.
PSP games suck (most of them). i mainly use mine for emulation (thank got we now have PS1 emulation and alot ofdecent games... MGS1!).
i meant psp.
Not really about pirating.. The PSP game library is pretty crappy at the moment in my opinion. I have about 30-40 UMD games and rarely even play them. In fact the only games I still play constantly are lumines and lumines 2. All of the other games are either ports (crappy ones with crap controls, glitchy GFX etc ) or games youd pass once and never play again. Don't get me wrong I love my PSP but with the games currently being offered for it, I'm using it more as a mp3 player nowdays :(
I have lumines (the first game I got, apart from Ridge Racer which came with it) and I love it still to this day.
I also love Pro Evolution Soccer 5 - I run it on my Memory Stick now with 3.03 OE and the annoying as crap loading times are gone. That was its worst feature.
The only other games I have are Loco Roco (love it), Mecury (excellent game, very hard though) and Wipeout (Just a port)
There's been nothing else that I've wanted to buy. So mostly I watch movies now...
Funny how both Gamerankings and metacritic say PSP's games are rated higher on average than the DS's games.
Then let them have fun playing the games. IMO most of the psp games are underdeveloped and just not that interesting.
Thank god for Madden, Tekken, and Metal Gear Acid (guilty pleasure of mine), and homebrew of course, or else I would be kicking myself for buying this system. Hell, the least they can do is give us a halfway decent RPG, I can't get through the 30 minute intro to Valkarie to see if its a good game...
(goes back to playing Minish Cap on gpSP)
Why own all of those games and not even play them? I own 32 UMD games, yes owned, not pirated, and I enjoy them all. I'm still looking to buy another 30 or so. So for me, I think that the PSP has TOO MANY good games worth playing...while I only saw three for the DS that I would like to play. It's all about what you like....Me...I use my PSP as a portable PS2/Homebrew heaven machine :D No pirating here though, it is illegal and hurts the gaming industry.
I HAVE played all of my games, just most of em don't have that much of a replay value or were outright crappy to begin with. I love Tekken, MGA, and GTA but other than those, nothing really catches my attention. On the homebrew side tho I cant get enough, it's amazing (emus, ir remote, pda apps etc). But as for official Sony supported gaming, I'll pass for now
I agree with you all so far, the psp games suck, only game worth paying for is either of the GTAs othrwise, download them cause you're not gonna play $20-$50 worth of gaming.
So Socom FTB 1 and 2 aren't worth buying? Along with MGS:PO?
Have you even tried playing Lumines, Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony, Killzone: Liberation, SOCOM FTB 1+2, MGS:PO?
i think what the PSP misses most is games really targeted for a handheld device. most of what i've seen so far looks like a minaturised PS2 title. would i want to sit through a 5 minute cutscene while playing in the subway? hell, no!
The games are good lol you buy 2 or 3 games for psp they're great there's no need to buy 30 games 3 will do. :P thts why they aren't seelling cause they're good. and no ds does not suck but way. psp games just have more replay value and longer playtime. Most ds games you buy you'll end up beating in an hour thus buying more games.
Piracy is a border effect
not so many users, comparing to the 18M psp sold, are using isos or Hombrew.
More than that most of us with DH or custom fw are buying more sony product than the average consummers.
I spent 500€ ths year in my giga pack, 2 games and a 2GB card.
So yes piracy is a border effect, all the game plateform are/will be cracked soon or late.
And so far i don't know any of those plateform that piracy had killed.
Please reconsider your point of view ..
but the thing is that most system must be modded in order to play isos, the psp you just need to install a custom firmware and thats it; making it easier for everyone to run isos. and thats the what's killing the psp and all of us that want to play games. I mean with the poor sales of mgspo I dont think we will be seeing another one.
What good is hardware sales if no one is actually buying the games? Do you think the game developers would continue to come out with new and good games for the psp?
Maybe if the publishers / developers lowered their prices, more people would be willing to actually buy their games. Maybe have the games downloadable from their online shop?
I think usa have some titles missing.
We have lotta of best psp game not yet in USA or others --
Example - Tales of Eternia.
I know you can get it for PS1 but PSP version have no loading screen at all, and all the PSP games should follow this game.
I don't know why people are so quick to jump to piracy when sales numbers like this come up. Help me understand plzkthx
When I see teh lows like this I think in my brain, 'wow, public opinion must be games suck or not worth buying.' I really really really doubt that the games aren't selling because a significant portion of people are using custom firmwares or iso loaders. It's because Sony and game companies are doing a *terrible* job at marketing. The psp is more alluring as a portable media device w/ the mp3 and the movies. I think that's what most ppl buy them for, and a few games like Lumines or w/e.
The psp is an awesome portable solution for all sorts of things, but think about it. Why do most people buy the DS? For the games that appeal to all sorts of gamers. The only thing about the psp that appeals to all sorts of gamers imho is it's media playback powers. You may find a handful of games with a broad appeal, but most of the games that take the limelight are ps2 ports which prolly many would-be gamers don't care about. What that mean? People buy a psp for just a few games, but mostly use it for other thing like photo, mp3, movie, whatever. Even teh stevejobs said that compare to iPhone, psp is garbage. wtflol he doesn't understand 3.03 oe-b, JUST LIKE MOST PPL WITH A PSP, but please understand i'm not say if stevejob doesn't know 3.03 oe-b (which is the only reason i can think smart person like him let overwhelming stupid fall from his lip) no one does, but i do say it gives you an insight to common thought towards the psp: it's only a media device, which why iPhone go after it, which why it used to be called iPod killer, which why...
So now, we have a probably huge demographic of people not buying many games b/c they use for a media player, and we have the target demographic who love it for the emulation and maybe, just maybe the *occasional* iso hehe so you can see what happens.
Also, people say that the piracy is probably what killing software sales, but look at the DS. Playing 'backup' copies of games is incomparably more easy than on the psp. For DS, get a slot-1 cart (looks EXACTLY same size as regular DS cart) put like 1GB of DS games (16~128MB before trim, most 32MB) by drag-and-drop. Put in DS and have fun. For psp, ta-082 you must FOLLOW EVERY SINGLE STEP to downgrade to 1.5, pray you haven't bricked, get firmware 1.5 and 3.03, pray they crc pass, make a pxar, move that pxar to another folder then upgrade again. Pray you don't brick. Get a 800mb rip from your umd that you bought, move it to memory stick (which is $$$$) then go and load it. Of course, you don't hafta do most of those steps too often, but still it hassles. Easier on DS, they still sell many games. Target demographic doesn't know what flash cart is. Likely demographic prolly could care less/isn't big enough to affect sales.
Oh, and game rating. Lame. if you buy a game based on game rating, you miss out. opinion lame, subconscious influence by free stuff from game companies, not understanding the beauty of true games can lower the game rating. that said i leave you with a nice pearls. if psp has five 9.5 games and twenti 7.8~8.2 games, then game list is average, no? but if DS has 12 9.5+ game, and 100 not so good ones, the average lower no? but listen this, who cares of the 100 bad games on ds or the 20 average game on psp? i won't buy them, will you?
i lost ya at "i dont know.."
Lazy ass game developers!!!
That better games need to be made for the system and stop with the ports. Period.
Piracy can only go so far. Out of all the psp units sold, only a small percentage of the total psp unit population out there deals with piracy. Out of all my friends who own PSP never knew the possiblity of actually playing PSP games via the memory stick with .iso's. The general public out there doesn't even know what "Homebrew" actually means. I'm not trying to say piracy is right, which it isn't, I doubt it affects sales...and if it does, only by a small percentage.
ISO's...... Hackers have been a major reason most the games on the PSP suck ass.
Who in there right mind would make a game for a system that is SO easy to steal games for?
if i bet that most ppl who have a psp have no earthly idea wtf homebrew, 3.03 oe-b, or popstation is i promise i'd win, wanna see?
hackers don't kill psp, psp kills psp kthx
