Looks like February was a pretty good month for video game hardware, despite the ongoing lackluster economic performance worldwide. According to NPD's released data for last month, hardware "strongly outperformed market expectations", with every console strongly outperforming their respective expected sales. So the retailers' fear that more people will buy less games was not as apocalyptic as they thought, after all.
For example, the Wii was expected to sell 669, 300 but instead sold 753,000 (oh, and yes, they do remain on top of the food chain yet again). This is followed by the Wii's next of kin, the DS, with an expected 492,000 sales, but exceeded to run away with 588,000. Software was also sparkly in February as sales were almost 10% ahead of expectations. In fact, total video game software sales jumped up 9% from US$ 673.3 million to US$ 733.5 million. Speaking of software, the Xbox 360 version of Street Fighter IV takes the second biggest slice of the pie, with 446,000 copies sold. This number translates to 65.5% more than the expected number of sales. Ka-ching! The PS3 version sat at number 3. Which title was the number 1? Wii Fit with 559,800 expected units sold, and 644,000 actual units sold. Well, summer's just around the corner after all. It's not that hard to imagine why people would be cramming to get fit (*cough*guilty*cough). As for the PS3's golden boy, Killzone 2, it broke the charts at #5, with a total of 323,000 units sold. Congratulations to the "winners" of February! Related Articles:

» I'm still so confused by Killzone 2's sales
What happened to the 1.1 million preorders in Europe alone? You'd expect them to have at least equal to that in the States, or at the minimum 800k, yet NPD is saying it sold less than 350k. Unless half the people didn't bother to pick it up, which is extremely doubtful
At first I thought VG Chartz made some kind of mistake with its numbers, but now NPD is also saying it really didn't sell all that well. Those preorder numbers must not have been true

Forgot Feb only has 28 days and KZ2 came out on the 27. So it sold ok, nothing amazing, but I still question the preorder numbers. I've never heard of anyone waiting 2 days after release to pick up their preorder

You have fallen victim to Sony spin. The 1.1 million europe preorders figure was not customer pre-orders. It was the number of units ordered by retailers in europe.

» ok, two issues
first off, these numbers only represent US, so EU is not counted in these numbers. Second, KZ2 did come out at the end of the month, so the numbers could be higher during March.

» Aboe two posters don't read
To sickofitall, if you read the first few sentences of my post, you'll see I said that the US should have at least equal to Europe's preorders. I know this article is not about Europe sales themselves, I'm saying US always preorders and buys more of just about any game than Europe, so if Europe had 1.1 million preorders then US should have around that if not more
to jac, yes I know that, but 320k sales over the first two days for a game as hyped as Killzone 2 are nothing earth-shattering anyway
And yea Devise I heard that rumor, but could never find any kind of confirmation on it. Looking more and more like that was the case. I don't think Sony would ever out right lie about preorders, since that can be construed as fraud

while i own all 5 of the current systems, i acknowledge that wii is indeed a lot of fun.. i use my ps3 and 360 a lot more (my psp gets used almost every day, while my ds sits locked up in a storage tote.. somewhere...) all in all it doesnt surprise me that a lot of families get the wii, and the wives want wii fit..
