The much-awaited December 2008 sales figures are out courtesy of the NPD Group. Nintendo dominates the hardware sales as usual with the DS and Wii. Interestingly enough, the Wii is the only platform to fall behind expectations. The Xbox 360 and PS3, however, are pretty much in line with market expectations, although the Microsoft console sold twice as much as its Sony rival. » Non-Wii? You mean non-Nintendo titles are all FPS's
And, none of the Nintendo titles are FPS's. Pattern?
Young kids = Don't like scary war games = Wii.
Older gamer = Doesn't mind scary violence = PS3 or 360.
I don't get it....How the hell is the thing still selling? God, there must be four Wii's for every child in NA and Africa by now. I would have thought the good consoles would have taken over by now. I mean, the software is undeniably weak. Hardcore first-party titles, and then No More Heroes. That's it. Just gimmicks after that.
The most dominant genre in video games now is FPS's. No getting around that, they've been popular since Wolfenstein, DooM, and Quake. The Wii has crappy CoD ports, that have no online, and features removed (No zombies in CoD5? That's the best part!). It's amazing how far the "I WANT IT!!!" factor has carried it.

» Well
The price has also carried it. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it doesn't generally matter what games are on the console, if it's cheaper it sells better. Especially in this economic climate

» True, but...
Still, the 360 arcade sells for less than the Wii. It is bare basics, but if price was all then the 360 should sell like hotcakes.

» Not entirely
More people in more age groups trust Nintendo than MS, and are more familiar with their games (Mario, Zelda, Wario etc) and that also makes a difference. People remember playing the NES and SNES, and decide to pick up a Wii to see if its as good as they remember, or get one for their kids or other young family members.
Even with all of that, the 360 is closing the gap with the Wii thanks to being cheaper. The ratio used to be much worse than 2:1.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!
You answered your question:
"I don't get it"
That sums it up right there.
"but if price was all then the 360 should sell like hotcakes."
Bingo! Now put two and two together and come up with the fact that the Wii simply caters to a MUCH LARGER group of people then what you THINK you know.

» A much larger group...
Yeah, the much larger group happens to be a non-core audience. Casual gaming should belong in it's own console, which I guess it is with the Wii. It caters to a non-hardcore base, and is selling because of mini-games. I guess MGS, Halo, Devil May Cry, and CoD fans will never understand what people see in casual gaming, but it is causing wars everywhere.
Wii + Casual mini games on a $250 platform.
360 + Hardcore games on a $200 platform.
Bingo. You put two and two together and realize that the Wii has only first party semi-hardcore games, and terrible online. Only little children would enjoy it, and there seems to be an endless amount of them.

You fail...
"Yeah, the much larger group happens to be a non-core audience."
The CORE audience is the LARGER GROUP! I think you meant HARDCORE.
Two completly different things.

» Yeah Im confused
The Wii caters to casual gamers, new and old alike, which is an exponentially larger group than the hardcore who buy 360s and PS3s. So, it sells better.
Plus in the fact that it isn't just casual gamers who buy Wiis, "only children enjoy it", which is also wrong even if we're not talking about hardcore gamers, because there are millions of casual gamers over the age of 12. People in their 40s enjoy the Wii. But some hardcore gamers do too. I'm about as hardcore as they come, I own 360 and PS3 and about 60 games between the two, I am extremely competitive in every game, about the only hardcore thing I don't do is playing game tourneys for money. And I owned and loved the Wii, until I exhausted the 4 or 5 amazing games it has. Twilight Princess was one of the best games I ever played.
Combine all of the things mentioned and the Wii's dominance should come as no surprise

» Damn
8.3 million consoles sold... Crazy
Both the 360 and PS3 sold twice as much as in Nov. Still 2:1 360 to PS3 tho. Sony really needs to consider a price cut, even just a $50 one
