No big surprises in the NPD console charts for January 2009. The Nintendo consoles are still going strong, with the Wii and DS only swapping their positions from December. This time, the Wii is on top with 679,200 units sold while the DS is in the number two spot with 510,800. Aside from claiming the top spot, Wii sales also exceeded the expected sales figures on simExchange by 16%. I guess it's no surprise then that top three software titles sold in the US in January 2009 were first-party Wii games. The only other console to do the same was the Xbox 360, which sold 3.34% more units than expected. Two Xbox 360 titles, Left 4 Dead and Call of Duty: World at War, came in at numbers 4 and 5 on the US software sales chart. Despite the recession, the industry as a whole also managed to increase its total revenue last month by 13% compared to January 2008. It also managed to exceed expected hardware sales by 1.41% and software sales by 4.39%. On the flip side, the PS3 and Nintendo DS both sold 3% less than expected. The big loser was the Sony PSP, which underperformed by 23.52%. No titles for the Sony consoles made it to the top ten software chart. Related articles:

» -.- down goes the PSP because of the unhackable mobo or semi-unhackable
As you can see one of the main factors of the PSP was being able to hack it to use its full potential but Sony gave us an unhackable mobo or was an unhackable mobo and still semi unhackable because Dark-Alex or whoever that other guy who stole it will not release the hack until a new exploit is found.

Do you believe that yourself? Its not like 90% of the PSP owners use CFW. Most likely not even close to 10. Don't you think it could somehow be related to the lack of good titles?

» Some of the people on QJ are so ignorant
Do you really believe PSP hackability influences sales that much? I guarantee you no more than 5-10% of owners have it hacked. Just because the majority of QJ users hack their PSPs, doesn't mean the whole world does.
Lack of great games is the problem, and has always been a problem for the PSP.
I see the Wii is still dominating. Shame that

And I bet devs are totally eager to develop for a platform so easily hacked for piracy...

There aren't that many CFW users.
Check Alek's blog, he once wrote an article about it.

Not that many users hack their PSPs. It has a negligible impact on sales. Likewise it has a negligible impact on game sales. After all, you need a hacked PSP to play stolen games.
PC game sales are the only ones hurt badly by piracy. It's just so easy to steal PC games. Just enter the name of a game followed by "torrent" in google, and you have yourself a free PC game, no hacking of any kind required.

Less then 1% of hardware owners hack or mod thier unit. That goes for ALL hardware and software.

WiiRolled: I saw that article and it was full of crap. It didn't take into account the OTHER sites people got their custom firmware tools from, or from friends of friends (...of friends) who never needed to use their own PC in the first place.
And was your point seriously that "Not many people pirate so it's okay"? I'm sure everyone who downloaded the patch for their pirated ISO of DJ Max Fever said the same thing. They're always saying "make decent games and we'll buy them"... well there you go.

How in hell did you come to that conclusion? Did you read my posts? My sole point was not that many people hack, at least not nearly as many as phyuku seems to believe, therefore it only makes a small dent in sales, hardware and software. Not that "not many people hack so it's okay", wtf. Poor reading comprehension

No one else will agree but F it. I, hate, Nintendo. I do, I love Sony and Microsoft, but damn do I hate Nintendo, I used to like them way back when, but now it's sickening. Wii Fit for number one sales? You've got to be kidding me, a bunch of people think they're going to get in shape with it or something? I swear Nintendo markets for people who just don't know gaming. From selling flash games on the wii to re-hashing old brands that they know will sell, I hate Nintendo. That's my opinion, and that is all, but in my eyes they're practically ruining what games should be, as long as people buy this bull *****, people will be scared to take risks to make ACTUAL innovative games. Finally, nintendo is for pu55y gamers.

Wow, thanks for showing us how ignorant you are.
Since last November I've lost a good amount of weight. The Wii Fit has been an excellent TOOL for tracking that AND giving me new ideas in my routine. That's exactly what it's for and that's exactly what it has given me. At the very least it's much more accurate at weighing then my $50 digital scale and my old $80 analog scale.
But it seems you are unable to understand that. How sad :(
Facts are facts. It's #1 for a reason. Now use your brain for something other then sitting on and try to figure out why.
I wouldn't expect Wii sales to remain strong, after all it's only a fad... HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!

» Nintendo equals Time-reversal
I agree 100% with TheLastGuitarHero. It's funny, because he wrote exactly what I was thinking when I saw the numbers in this article. 360 and PS3 fanboys can go at it all day long, but at the end of the day BOTH systems are at least engineered with the 'real gamer' in mind. And the games are serious games even adults like myself are interested in playing, not the 12th generation of Mario. ...Or some dopey-looking cartoonish Tennis game (because the system is too ancient in design to produce good-looking video) with 'controls' that you just randomly waggle-in-the-wind and you sometimes hit the ball. The Wii has 'fad' all over it. And, I've never (ever) met a Nintendo console I liked. They were always cheap toy-looking consoles. When the NES was big, the shiny/serious Atart 5200 was available, or the Sega Master System with lightgun and 3D glasses (way ahead of its time). When SNES was out, Sega Genesis innovated with CD and 32x. Then, when serious consoles like 3DO, and PS1 were out, Nintendo pulled out its marketing troops again to extol the virtues of "64bit". Yeah, too bad they had to screw everyone by making it a CARTRIDGE, when everyone else had long-since moved-on to CD. ....There is just no way that Nintendo ever qualifies as a 'serious' console. And, they've even been successfully sued in the past for things like deliberately holding-back supplies to trump-up prices. (Which, in my opinion, is probably secretly half of the sales-rush for Wii: the buzz is out there, whether warranted or all or not, and every parent has to 'jump' on buying one when they can because BIG HUGE Nintendo just somehow cannot 'meet manufacturing demand'.....for a yesteryear technology device. ---riggghhht.) ;-)

@damonous - How about explaining to us what the level of "circuitry" has to do with the price of tea in China?
It doesn't matter if it's complicated or easy. Manufacturing a product is automated and for the most part, all the same.
It's a matter of time, not complexity. There are only so many hours in a day. Let's do something you aren't used to. Lets look at FACTS.
1. Nintendo sells MORE then twice as many units as Microsoft. They sell THREE TIMES as many units as Sony.
2. MS doesn't manufacture a damn thing. It's all outsourced. Either way, the time is takes to manufacture a 360 versus a Wii is about the same. Yet Nintendo has twice as much demand.
3. If MS or Sony had the same demand as Nintendo, they would also have shortages.
You talk a lot of talk about how Nintendo SHOULD be able to keep up, but you back it up with nothing. You can't even provide logical reasons as to why they should.
Care to try again?

@steve_723 - Where exactly are you getting confused?
Wii - 679,000
360 - 309,000
309*2 is 618
618 is LESS THEN 679
Who taught you math? And why are you adding up ALL Sony hardware? In that case you MUST add in the DS. Gees dude, you FAIL!
Either way I was comparing just current gen consoles.

ISOHaven, since you got so upset that I mocked the Wii because, (honestly) everyone knows it's not for hardcore gamers. You can try to twist those words but we all know, despite the fact that some try to hide it.
But now I know why the Wii is for pu55y gamers, because you yourself, whined like a pu55y, all that I said was I hate Nintendo for what I feel like they're plaguing the market, and you get your panties in a knot and start throwing out useless things that don't combat my argument not one time.
Okay I get it, you were once a fatass now thanks to the power of the Wii you lost weight using a 200 dollar heating pad or whatever it is I don't really care. Join a fitness club. No one cares about the fact that you used to be fat, I was saying how it's sad that it's come to that fact where people buy something that stupid.
Now, I don't know if you were actually fat, and once again, don't care. You said you "lost a good amount of weight." Was it ALL thanks to moving from side to side, or did you combine other attributes to sticking out your leg and balancing on the other? In which case why did you buy something that expensive?
"Now use your brain for something other then sitting on and try to figure out why."
...I said nothing about I can't figure out why it's number one, I was just saying it was lame. That's my opinion, you just decided to cry about it. I say cry because you could have made your point much better without sounding like you're 13.

TheLastGuitarHero, I really think you're missing the point to the Wii. It's not hardcore nor is it for pu55y gamers as you oh so immaturely put it. It's for casual gamers - The ones that don't obsess about gaining the highest level or topping the leaderboard - The ones that want to have carefree fun. It's pick up and play. Flail about like a maniac with friends and family and have fun doing it. And we're moving about and exercising while doing it.
A lot of people don't get any exercise as is. Several major corporations could band together and produce several inspirational commercials, Or schools could heavily promote physical activity. No matter how you slice it, chances are, the majority of people would rather spend all day texting, surfing the internet, gaming, etc.
Nintendo has created a console that encourages us to be physically active while having a blast with friends and family. There's nothing wrong with that. Maybe even the people who obsess over using Wii Fit start to feel more energetic and lively after all of the exercise and decide to take get some fresh air, perhaps taking a walk around the neighborhood.
I don't know how you can think that this is plaguing the market. The majority of most American's are spoiled and deprive themselves of exercise - Obviously we shouldn't need a console in order for us to be healthy, but that's how it is in today's society and that's not going to change.
I personally love Wii Fit and I exercise daily. There's nothing wrong with having fun while being physically active. But by all means have fun with your PS3 and Xbox 360 if you really enjoy more hardcore and serious games. But don't you think for a minute that the Wii is plaguing anything. I didn't realize physical activity could be considered a plague.

» I have to agree with ISOHaven;
Fact is fact, just because a system cannot surpass the others in graphics doesn't necessarily make it a bad system. I own a Wii and PS3 and used to own a 360 until it bricked on me several weeks after buying it. Each system has it's strong points and everyone with the right mind to will agree with me. Wii has crap online but very simple and easy controls including motion. PS3 has a extremely powerful processor and graphics engine enough to run another operation system on it. That's pretty tough. The 360 has amazing community qualities that those of us who play for friends and with friends couldn't bare to live without. Stop bashiing other systems when it's obvious where each system stands.
FYI: Wii Fit has been proven countless times to have actually helped people lose weight and become more fit. The excercises are vigorous though.
