Left 4 Dead - Image 1

Yet more accolades for Grand Theft Auto 4 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC).

I know a lot of our readers have been disputing the game's GOTY status, so it may come as a disappointment to that part of the gaming masses that Rockstar's latest GTA has been crowned as THE game of 2008 in the New York Times' own Best of 2008 list.

Yeah, it's not exactly earth-shaking news, but what caught my eye in this list wasn't the GOTY, but the more unconventional awards that were handed out. Here's look at a couple of winners as well as a quick quote:
  • BEST ZOMBIES: Left 4 Dead - "Valve, with Left 4 Dead, demonstrated why it is the premier developer of first-person shooters (sorry Id, sorry Bungie). The pacing is taut, and the game is built around the ludicrous fun of its multiplayer modes."
  • BEST EXPLANATION OF WHY NINTENDO HARDLY NEEDS BIG GAMES ANYMORE: The Wii - "[Core Nintendo] players are finally coming to realize that Nintendo does not need to fawn over them anymore because the rest of the planet, which has never even heard of Zelda, is still clamoring for the Wii... These kinds of people don’t even consider themselves gamers, but they are why Nintendo can get away with neglecting its core fans. For now."
You can check out the complete rundown of winners by clicking on the Via link. And GTA 4? It won for being "one of the few games that even try to take on the real world in any adult way." Oh, and look out for QJ's own Best of 2008 article. That's due to go up soon, or at least as soon as the other bloggers hand in their choices (I'm looking at you, Gino D.).

» BEST EXPLANATION OF WHY NINTENDO HARDLY NEEDS GOOD GAMES

Fixed.

The system has the worst games out of any system that's been released(aside from the virtual console which doesn't count as it's games from other systems) yet it's doing far better than most systems have ever done.

Speak for yourself. I've played Brawl and Kart more this year than any other console or handheld game, maybe not PC game though. And even though I own all consoles and handhelds I can imagine them dominating much of my 2009 game time, maybe not Kart so much but Brawl for sure.

Then I have to 100% Galaxy, Prime 3. Like the N64 days there might only be a handful of great games (more higher rated exclusives than ANY other console though......) but theres nothing on the other systems that come close to Nintendo's main franchises (so you don't misconstrue that: not when they make spin-offs).

You're way off there, you've got it the other way around. There's nothing on the Wii that comes close to Sony or Microsoft's main franchises - Metal Gear Solid 4? Gears of War 2? LittleBigPlanet? GTA4? Even Halo! And I'm not that mad keen on Halo. The point is that no Wii games come close to the main games on the REAL consoles.

The only reason the Wii sells so well is because of all the kids asking their parents for one and the people who buy one just for the sake of it, because they think it will be fun, and then are bored of it within a month. Almost everyone I know who has one played it a lot for a couple of weeks and then have barely touched it since.

I'd choose Twilight Princess + Corruption over LBP, GTA4, Halo.

Left 4 Dead for Best Zombies? How zombie games were released this year anyways? I can think of Dead Space, but that's more like monsters than your typical zombies.

I don't think Silent Hill counts either

   Re: spicyhamster - 2008-12-22
 » well

i guess cod 5 might count. but yeah, it's pretty dumb. at least its not as bad as last years vgas when they gave halo 3 the award for best game powered by mountain dew

ahhhhh Silent Hill, that game flew under the radar. There was also Siren.

Way to go not releasing any big games, keep up the good work. You released two good games this year, next year you should aim for just one.

Translation:

Rockstar gave the NY Times some nice $$$ to downplay the massive problems with GTA4. Just like they did with IGN. They get an interview with those lying POS's at Rockstar (1% my big white a$$) and then give GTA4 9.0 scores... EVEN THOUGH IGN KNEW ABOUT THE MASSIVE PROBLEMS AND THE GAME NOT EVEN BEING FINISHED BEFORE RELEASE!

Looks like Rockstar is taking a page from Edios' book.

what MASSIVE problems are you talking about? My PS3 version runs just fine. I haven't encountered any bugs. If you are talking about the PC version, tough luck. Sometimes, but only sometimes, the mistake is right in front of the PC. You can't run GTA4 under 2 GHz CPU power.
Seriously, I heard complains from people, who tried to run GTA4 on a *****ing Voodoo 2. Imagine that. Guess where the problem lies now.

   Re: Neuromancer - 2008-12-23
 » ....

Obviously I'm talking about the PC version. If you have an attitude like "One system rocks, other system sucks" then your trollery is obvious. People on PS3 deserve a working game for $50 but people on the PC don't? Let's keep it out of the realm of the retarded, please.

Most of the time, but only most of the time, people on systems which BLOW AWAY the max requirements are having massive problems. You can't just assume everything is user error, there are way way too many people reporting problems. STEAM IS GIVING OUT REFUNDS FOR GTA4. Getting a refund out of steam after you have downloaded the title is UNHEARD of, but for some reason Valve is coughing up refunds for this game, hmm perhaps because it was released unfinished?

What are these GTA PC problems you're speaking of? Do you have any links I can read? I wanted to buy it for PC but if the problems are that bad I won't bother

 » For me...

Guitar Heros and Rock Bands of the world HAVE to be the best games on the planet. I mean, they're on display in a lot of the stores that have gaming systems...people are buying the overpriced peripherals...and there's a constant stream of DLC...and Metallica is supporting one of them (and these guys rarely support anything).... I know they aren't crash, bang, blow-up hookers games, but goddamn someone's doing something right.
