PSP hotspot - Image 1As you've probably heard, Sony released firmware 3.30 yesterday in the latest of their attempts to add new features to the PSP, and in turn keep up with the homebrew hackers.

One of these new features was the "Use Wireless Hotspot" option under the PSP Settings menu. In Sony's latest ploy to convert more people to the do the evil upgrade which prevents access to homebrew games and custom firmwares, it sat down with cellphone operator T-Mobile to get free Wi-Fi for 3.30 PSP users.

All you have to do is use the T-Mobile Hotspot locator and find the nearest Hotspot, go there, and select the "Use Wireless Hostpot" option in the settings menu. T-Mobile HotSpots can be found in quite a lot of places like Starbucks coffeehouses, Borders Books & Music stores, FedEx Kinko's Office and Print Centers, and more.

The free Wi-Fi promotion runs for six months, however as we said yesterday, be wary about upgrading your PSP's firmware. It is possible that you could go for a very long time without homebrew or custom firmware.

» Is this going to really work?

I dont believe that the homebrew community is going to fall for this trap. The possibilities with custom firmware out weighs a minor convenience of wifi, especially only for 6 months

I remember everyone loved the McDonald's hotspots for ds. Now sony has them and it's a ploy? get over yourselves.

I have to agree with you lawl, its so dumb that every new feature is a ploy to convert hombrewers. A large percent of PSP users dont use hombrew so PSP updates are all they get. Sony is just trying to give average users new updates not exactly convert people.

..yea, of course you can - anyone can connect to any unencrypted wifi hot spot. correct me if im wrong..but hotspot in mcdonalds, strabucks etc. are not free...they are run by companies like t-mobile and you have to pay for them. there are few free connection you could use in public places. this new feature allows you to connect to a t-mobile hotspot for free.

i live in the UK with an american psp, i wonder if i'll be able use the free access :P

 » So wait...

I can either use a normal wi-fi spot, or I can now use one with the T-Mobile brand on it? Is there something I'm missing here? (Besides the 6 months free thing?)

   Re: Dude (Unregistered) - 2007-03-30
 » Yes

T-mobile hotspots are at airports and Starbucks, etc. They require a subscription to use.

Sony has definitely given us a good deal, sure, though. T-moblie hotspots cost about $20/month

This shows the advantages of having a mod chip

=being able to have 2 firmwares on your psp at once. OO i want that baby

   by Hpo56 (Unregistered) - 2007-03-30
 » Modchip

It's not really like having two firmwares. You have to keep updating and downgrading(downdating). This t-mobile service is kinda useless it's the same as having normal internet. PLUS who needs internet so bad they need it on PSP and pay monthly fee

 » fuuuuck

this is the stupidest ***** ive ever seen
all you need for free wifi is a brain
download wifisniffer, find a wifi connection and badaboom

and if your smart like me, you would know on WEP, most people dont change the defaults ;) social engineering = getting the wep off of the bottom of their wireless router if its a certain brand ;)

***** you sony id rather shove pointy sticks in my eyes and ass than give up iso's and homebrew. *****es
