There is nothing new about a TV series launching, but Memoirs, a bio-series looking at the lives of contemporary music artistes, is unique in that it will debut on the Sony Play Station Portable (PSP) before traditional TV channels.

By launching its programming on the ARM powered Sony ’s PSP, the Tokyo based production company Flamingo Features has taken a significant step in changing the way TV programmes are distributed.

“We believe Sony ’s Play Station Portable will revolutionise the video industry,” explains Masaharu Kawakami, CEO of Flamingo Features Japan, who predicts the impact on the video industry will be similar to that experienced by the audio industry with the onset of the Apple iPOD .

“It’s all the excitement of the big screen and the home entertainment system; sized to take anywhere,” said Memoirs creator and executive producer Austen Tayler, of the Sony PSP, which includes an ARM7 and an ARM9 processor.

The Memoirs series launches in Japan in January 2006.  Each programme is 90 minutes long and will be available from the console’s retail chain.

Actual PSPUpdates user comments:

"as portable as it is, i never carry it anywhere with me...

By TheCheeks, at 8:52 AM"

"I never take my psp anywhere either. At almost $500 with 1 gig stick and at least one game in the thing, it's not worth getting mugged over if the wrong person happens to see you playing it on the go. It's portable from my living room up to my bedroom and that's where it stays. I've seen people get mugged for alot less..

By Ceno78, at 10:51 AM"

"But really...only the GBA is portable. People don't really play games for totally 'on-the-go' scenarios, such as when you're walking around town and happen to sit down at a coffee shop for a while. That's why the GBA Micro isn't insanely popular. However, for longer, more routine trips where you need to carry around a bag of some sort, the PSP and DS are wonderful systems.

At any rate...I sure wouldn't carry around those huge systems in my pocket.

"I would never dare to take my PSP out anywhere coz it would get stolen pretty quick...

Not everyplace in the world is a hotspot for people stealing expensive electronics you know. You can carry the system in a case with a beltclip and not your pocket if you don't want to either.

@Godmedia...

Think your missing the whole point of the playstationPORTABLE...yes thats PORTABLE...as moogle & richyt rightly said, if you wana play games at home, thats what the ps2(or xbox) is for!! also, im pretty sure you have a computer at home, so that makes the use of the PSP in the house pretty much redundant(unless ur on the loo!!).

i only hope Sony doesnt pay attention to your views and caters to the people who bought the system for what it was designed for....to play games(aswell as the other multimedia functions) on the go. If your wanting more features for your home console, then jus wait for the next generation consoles to drop, the PSP was designed to be portable, and it doesnt have the capabilites to match either a nex gen console or a home computer, so to say 'The demand is for LESS portability, not MORE!' is crazy!!' coz thats what im waiting for...and im sure are so many others.

just wana comment on a few of your comments..

Leif said: '“It’s all the excitement of the big screen and the home entertainment system; sized to take anywhere,” is one of the most rediculous comments i've heard about the PSP.'

Why is this rediculous?! the PSP plays games, plays music, plays videos and you can access the internet...um, that statement sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Godmedia said: 'PSP users don't want a home entertainment system that they can carry places, they want to take a portable and hook it up to their home entertainment system.'...um, again i dont think so. we already have home consoles!(and better ones coming!!!). Altho i also want the psp to be able to hook up to my home entertainment sytems,i would much prefer more development into the portable side of it,as afterall, thats what it was designed for!!

Godmedia said: 'Most gamers spend countless hours locked up someplace with a game console, not out on the streets getting any kind of physical activity. If we could be out and about doing something cool, we wouldn't have time to game.'

Not meaning to sound offensive...but dude, get a life.

lol, and 4 quotes from gamers isnt really conclusive is it?!..not sure your (self-appointed)role as spokesperson for the whole community is needed.

Peace.

i agree with Skye1, but sony is basicly testing their version of internet tv out in japan and we're left with nothing... so what do the hackers do to overcome this? WinAmp's internet tv on the psp, thats what!

Are you guys stupid or something?
This article is totally rigged.... you can tell me the ignorant mention of ARM7 and ARM 9 processors in the PSP. (Which, by the way, THE PSP DOESN'T HAVE!)

   by vm-01 (Unregistered) - 2005-11-01

You know what does have an ARM7 and an ARM9? A DS, that's what!!

Talk about an automatic press release.

First off, Winamp's internet TV sucks. You can never get on a channel that has anything good on it.

Second, Austen Taylor shows us how little Sony and it's affiliates understand about their own product. When he says, "It’s all the excitement of the big screen and the home entertainment system; sized to take anywhere," he clearly shows that he is ignorant about PSP users. PSP users don't want a home entertainment system that they can carry places, they want to take a portable and hook it up to their home entertainment system.

There are no less than three individual products currently on the market to take your PSP and hook it up to your television at home and one even lets you hook up a PS2 controller to it. The number one feature request for the PSP is a way to view the PSP on a regular home video setup. The demand is for LESS portability, not MORE! Most PSP users don't even carry their PSPs with them anyways, for fear of loss or damage.

Sony and it's affiliates need to be producing new products and services that cater to the real lifestyles of gamers. Most gamers spend countless hours locked up someplace with a game console, not out on the streets getting any kind of physical activity. If we could be out and about doing something cool, we wouldn't have time to game. Couple that with the PSPs notoriously bad battery life and susceptibility to damage and you will find that portability is really an afterthought from both the designer and end-user point of view.

I agree with godmedia, I love my PSP, but I dont want to take it out with me. I'm 31 years old and carrying a 300$(CAN$)toy around with me isn't going to impress the ladies. Maybe if it had more 'PDF-like' functions I could get away with it but anyway...

“It’s all the excitement of the big screen and the home entertainment system; sized to take anywhere,” is one of the most rediculous comments i've heard about the PSP. I actualy play my PSP while watching my big screen TV or listening to music on my entertainment system.

   by Moogle (Unregistered) - 2005-11-01

I'd have to disagree somewhat with godmedia and leif. I bought a psp for portability, if I wanted to play something at home, I would get a console instead or play on my pc. I don't mind bringing it out when I'm bored out in places, when I have a long bus travel, I sometimes take it out to play to pass the time. I also take it out when I'm in long waiting lines or when I'm generally bored outside. As with the ladies comment, I doubt your going to take it out just to show the ladies or use the psp as a lure for them. If your going to be talking with ladies, you aren't going to be taking out your psp and playing on it hopefully and why would a random lady care if you take it out on bus, it won't leave that much of an impression as you think as they are usually doing their own things. As for your streets comment godmedia, your not going to be playing the full battery life all at once when your out. Usually your going to be just playing for 30 minutes to an hour a couple times a day max. When you go out you usually have something to do, and if you happen to be bored, you can play your psp.

Yeah, who would buy s PSP for home? what a waste! that's what I have my TV, Computers, or pimped-out PS2 for... added they do way more, so to keep a PSP at home would seem pointless. Also if we all never took them out, then why would we stick emulators or applications on them that we could just use a computer or laptop for? theyed handle them far better anyways.

And hey! Its a moogle!!! :D
