It seems that New Zealand has its own game-hating Jack Thompson
counterpart. Get a load of New Zealand Chief Censor Bill Hastings, who
says parents who purchase violent video games for their children should
be prosecuted."They might think the offence is silly, but it ain't," Hastings told The Dominion Post yesterday. If someone was caught knowingly giving a minor access to restricted video games, the punishment could be up to three months imprisonment or a fine of up to US$ 10,000. Fortunately, no one has been prosecuted just yet. Hastings believes that the prosecution would send out what he calls "shock value" to other parents, which would deter them from making the same infraction. "It would send out a message that the enforcement agency means business," he said. And here's Jack Thompson:

» This guy makes me angry
New Zealand is just a relaxed country who know that a restricted game wont make their child grow up into murdering person. I've never heard any bad news about what gaming has done to NZ kids.
I don't give a ***** what this guy says anyway, They overcharge games here way too much so I don't think they should care what we do with the game for the price they are charging.
Street Fighter 4 = $140 NZD What the f*ck is up with that.
I'm sure he might make a few parents stop buying restricted games for their kids but I think our country knows better than to list to this guy.

NZD and USD are completely different.
140 New Zealand dollars + 70.75600 U.S. dollars
So it's not THAT overpriced.

All this does is encourage further piracy.
The games are already overpriced to ***** in the pacific region and add in further politically based restrictions like this will only further people's resolve to acquire what they want by other means.
Kids are not stupid, but their parents usually are. Yes, they'll listen to this polly and may even decide the pull the pin on future purchases which will only encourage little Johnny to fire up bit torrent instead.
Well done.

» Here's what I'll say
If I end up getting a kid who gets interested in gaming, I don't care what he'll play as long as he/she has fun.
However, since I grew up with the older titles. I'd start my kid off playing the older titles first for a few years, then slowly progress through all the systems until getting to current gen.

I really want this guy to shut the hell up.
He looks like a bigger dichhead than Jack Thompson.
The rating systems on games were put in place by the gaming company to let parents know what games are for what age groups. Companies like Nintendo or Sony don't have to even use it!
The games can be legally bought in America (I'm pretty sure New Zealand too) anywhere as long as the store permits it.
There's no law against it. Jack Thompson's been trying to push that, though. This guy, oh this guy, this guy's taking it to a whole new level with actual punishment.
FREEDOM OF SPEECH FTW!!!!

This a$$ brings shame on us New Zealander's. Like the rest of the world, I'd like to think of NZ as a relaxed place when it comes to censorship *as we love violence in games as much as everyone else*, but this jerk belong in Australia with their crazy censors!
But i guess this nothing compared to the **** internet laws they're trying to pass.
There are too many ****wits tied up in the beurocratic games, trying to advance their own careers and not giving a flying **** about the common man who love to download pron and play violent games!

It's also ridiculous they are taking this decision out of the parents hands. It's ultimately up to the parent to decide what to expose their children to.
My mom let me watch Arnold Schwarzenegger, rambo/rocky and all other sorts of R movies from the time I was 8. If mario bros had decapitations and blood that would have been alright too. Basically since I can start remembering i've been seeing people get killed.....and I have no inklings to go out and kill, rape or maim anyone.....quite the opposite.

Hopefully these same kids don't have to survive in the wild and have to kill animals for food or something because all that these rules do is soften people up and make them not think of reality. I remember as a child, I used to watch a lot of horror flicks on tv and it was all in fun entertainment. Now it's sad that today children can't have the same fun without people butting in and trying to run their life. This kind of government has to stop!

Sex acts is quite another, kids will go out and fool around with each other before puberty even given exposure to pornagraphic material.
They're just playing generally but it can mess kids up for life, take a look at Britney's hurtling trainwreck a couple of years ago, that's a prime example of what carnal knowledge can do at too young an age.

Should both be fined for this stuff. I've said before on here there's a reason that we have a ratings system, it's so kids get to have a childhood. When they're older they have a core personality which was based around inocence. Giving underaged children pornographic or violent material damages their psyche. Our laws recognise that a child can not be charged as an adult for an offense because of this time we call childhood where inocent mistakes can be made and forgiven.

Jack Thompson would have these games banned fullstop not even adults would get to use them. Geez I hate QJ's inflamotory titles on things. I wonder how many people posting on this article are underage themselves and worried they're going to have their gaming cut.
To me that's not a valid reason to not enforce these ratings.

1. The ratings system is NOT A LAW. There should not be fines.
2. Childhood is defined arbitrarily.
3. Jack Thompson does not want to ban games. He wants the ratings system to be legally enforced.

Tell parents how to take care of their children! I personally wouldn't care if my kid is playing Grand Theft Auto or watching porn.. at least he or she isn't smoking crack with his friends.
And avatar76.. Stop trying to tell people how to care for their children. I've played violent video games since I was like, 10, I got into college for free, I play piano pretty well, I'm a solid student, I have friends.. My psyche isn't damaged at all.

Yeah but some kids don't know the difference between good and bad. Were not all the same.
I am 28 and I have been playing video games as part of my life since I got my first Atari when I was about 6. I myself have graduated from college, and I am in a career I love.
But there are still the ***** ups, like the kid that shot his parents over halo. Some kids aren't as smart. It's really hard to draw the line.
Some parents depend on using the TV and video games to babysit and that's where the problem starts to kick in.

I've never stolen from the store, so I don't understand why Walmart has all that detection stuff to stop people from stealing...I agree that all games with a M rating should not be sold to children. But if a parent feels their child is mature enough to play a M game, then they have that right. There is a line between protection and controlling, and i think this one passes it. If we cant trust parents, then all kids should be raised in camps...jk

If the kid watches adults smoking crack on GTA though he's imediately been desensitised to the idea.
PS success in not a measure of how damaged your psyche is or is not, look at Hitler. Successful yes sane probably not... not that I'm comparing you to Hitler just making a point.

You have a point.....because if the gov doesn't trust parents to make the right decision, than ya, why mess around with these little restrictions.....just throw everyone in camps.
We are all products of our environment. As children our environment is controlled by our parents. So the kid that shot his parents over halo, I blame the parents....if he was raised properly that would not have been a problem. It does not have anything to do with being stupid or not.
Raise two children in two different rooms.....one watches people helping other people in different situations all day....this is all he knows. The other watches people maim and kill people in different situations, this is all he knows. Let them out into the world at 18, and see how they react.....since they don't know anybetter one will help one will hurt. It's up to the parents to tell kids this is fictional, this is bad, this is good, this is reality....blah blah blah.....
If parents are not involved....ya, might as well put all kids in camps.

I accually agree with this on terms of teaching kids to cuss is apperently child abuse and you can be fined and put aways for that. This is basicly the same it really annoys me when i see parents of 13-16 come in to the store and buy rated M games for there kids. We are required to tell them the rating and they just shrug it off ratings DO need to be legaly inforced that ways we can get more rated M and maybe higher games in the market.

No, I, unlike you, think its right for every person to have RIGHTS and not be restricted worse than what a black man would be in the 1800s. Just because YOU think everyone should have a "childhood", which is completely determined by the parents, doesnt mean that everyone wants one. Did it ever go through your *****ing head for a half a second that perhaps some 15 year olds would like the right to vote? And the right to be treated like a mother*****ing human being? I seriously cannot believe how well this world has managed to brainwash so many people into believing ageism is right and that numbers are literally magical. And I believe that any person with the ability to consent should be allowed to have sex with any person they choose, as it has been happening for 2000+ years. Numbers do NOT determine the ability to consent, as they do not determine a SINGLE OTHER FACTOR, nor will they ever. Numbers do NOT make a person magically able to do something. It may come as a surprise to a brainwashed monkey like yourself but MAGIC ISNT REAL.

Pedophile is nothing but an ageist word for a rapist. All rapists deserve life in prison. I do not support rape but I suppose you think I do. I dont really care. I dont really expect many people to support me right now, I can only hope that 100 years in the future when ageism is (hopefully) abolished and the world finds something else to discriminate against, that people remember me as one of the few people that was against it first. Please do check out www.youthrights.org, you will see that freedom for 'children' is not just something that I thought up, thousands of 'children' want freedom.

Kids shouldn't play games that aren't meant for them to play. At the same time how dare them take rights out of the parents hands.
It doesn't even sound like lawmakers are trying. All they can think of is banning more and more stuff. Think outside of the box. Why not make the games in stores that are M rated (for example), be behind curtains or something. Kind of like the porn section in the video rental places. Out of site, out of mind- y'know?
How many kids can goto those places and rent Debbie Does Dallas? None.
Besides how much of a douche bag would you feel going into something like that and picking up "Manhunt 2" for your 5 year old?
Something like that would have more control over this kind of thing than any law that takes away parents' rights as parents.

I remember playing Resident Evil 2 when I was about 7 on my Nintendo 64. And, you'll never believe this! I've never killed a person! Though I would certainly like to see idiots like these shot, I would never kill a person, EVER. Yet that game was rated M for 17 and older so surely I should have killed someone by now? Right? Or is it, perhaps, that a number based restriction system will always fail no matter what because NUMBERS DO NOT REFLECT KNOWLEDGE.

So, what your saying is that the average person under 17 would go out and kill if they played an M rated video game like GTA IV? And yes, I do believe in some sort of restrictions for violent media, just not based on age. Perhaps some sort of test or class would work. Age means absolutely nothing and believing that turning a certain age magically makes it so you are able to understand if something is right or wrong is just insane. There are plenty of 30 year olds that cant handle M rated games and plenty of 14 year olds that could.

Absolutely not!
You took what I am saying out of context. Younger age groups don't have the same type of life experience. The line between what is right and what is wrong is not as clear as it might be for a typical adult.
What I am saying is that younger minds are much more fragile and should not be tainted by crime, violence, horrible language and drugs.
Also it is not just 17 year olds that are affected by this, but also young children like 6 year olds whose parents do not know any better.
The debate can go forever, and this isn't solely based on age. There are a number of factors that matter.
In the end sheltering our kids from the bad things in life, and making sure they grow up to be good people, that is what a parents job is.
To debate that would be surely be impossible for any parent that loves their children.

The debate can go forever, and this isn't solely based on age. There are a number of factors that matter.
In the end sheltering our kids from the bad things in life, and making sure they grow up to be good people, that is what a parents job is.
To debate that would be surely be impossible for any parent that loves their children.

Exactly, and I like your idea about the "curtained" section for games.
I also agree with you about making sure children have an actual childhood. Carnal knowledge at a young age definitely is not a good thing. As well as that the reason that we have laws that prevent a child from being trialled as an adult is because the expectation is that a child didn't really know what he was doing. A kid who has been trained to kill efficiently in a movie or in a computer game on the other hand turns all that on it's head.

"I want to make sure this poor black man has a good 'job'." as they would say back in the 1800s to persons who were against slavery. I am guessing that 'childhood' is the 21st century equivelent. Please do describe your idea of 'childhood' and why you think that every single human being wants one, as you seem to know exactly what every single human being wants.

Back in Black + White TV age some parents were trying to stop kids from watching The Three Stooges. Because, some kids know not to hit a person over the head with a hammer, but what about the others kids who might copy it?
When I was a kid only Atari 2600 was out, so not too real violence in video games, but I did sneak porn mags since 6yrs old :) I let my 7yr old son play Grand theft auto 4. Yep, because as a good parent of a smart kid I taught my son right from wrong. He knows video games aren't real (just like star wars isn't real).
I have no more fear of my son being violent from video games, then I'm scared he's going to push a safe on my head because he watched "Tom + Jerry" cartoon!

Age of consent is not the same as race you're either a pedophile yourself or you sympathise with them. If either of those things are true GTFO of here you're not welcome.

I personally would describe childhood as the age of innocence and carelessness. Young children who are in the process of learning, and growing. Expanding on the information we feed them daily as parents, teachers and adults.
In a sense I see what you mean about grouping people by their age, but in all reality life as an adult doesn't start until you move on your own, have a job and do your own thing without support from family or anyone else. It is fair to say that at 18 you are an adult. Maybe not always in the mentality of an adult, but you are free from that point on to make your own life decisions. I think that is why it is easy to group people by their age.
To put such brutal ideas in the eyes of children is a shame, and I don't feel it is fair for the kids. I think the problem you are having Justingraziano is that you are keeping your eyes closed to the fact that this also affects not only 17 year olds, but young kids. That is where the problem all stems from. I personally don't think my 11 year old or my 4 year old are ready to learn about life and death from a video game that uses such profanity it would make my Grandmother cry.
I just don't think strong content like that is a good idea for young children. That is why I am against this guy trying to tell parents what to do. Because that would leave parents with no jurisdiction to say when their kids are ready to be presented with these games.
Or did you not realize what this whole debate is about?

@ avatar76: I assumed you would start with the pedophile bull***** because, as an ageist, you were taught that if anyone disagrees with ageism in anyway, they are automatically a rapist. What a *****ing idiot. And yes, ANY TYPE OF AGEISM is the same as racism. It is a form of cruel and completely useless discrimination that only leads to problems. For literally everything that currently has ageism, such as the viewing of violent media, all people should be required to pass a special kind of test or class to prove that they can handle it. If you seriously disagree and believe that turning a certain age automatically makes it so you can do something with absolutely no negative side effects, you are either far stupider than I originally thought or your just what I assumed you were the whole time, a *****ing Christian trying to push his/her anti-freedom views on the only group that you can, children. If you are the first, please check yourself into a local mental hospital. If you are the second, please check yourself into a maximum security prison.
@ failtorespond: Some 11 year olds can handle violent media just fine, and some cant. Weather they can or cant isn't something that a parent should be able to decide (as they can certainly be wrong). Instead, like I said earlier, a class or test should be given to them and, if they pass, they would then be able to purchase violent media automatically, without any parents ever involved. It would work like this: If the person failed, they would have to wait a period of time in order to retake the test or class. If the person passes then they would be given some type of certificate that they would show, along with ID, to a retailer and only then would they be allowed to purchase a violent video game, movie, or whatever else you currently deem inappropriate for children. This would work great. Honestly, you really have to be ageist to think this would not work great.

People pass driving tests to get licenses, and still can't handle driving. Tests don't always allow for perfect results. Your dream of everyone being tested for their mental competence is nothing more than a hope. Here in the real world, I have to say I would want control of what media my children have. When they are ready to accept responsibility and live on their own, then they can play whatever the hell the want.
Until that day I still say young children should not play graphic games. Children are young, impressionable and parents and all adults should defend that innocence with their lives. Any debate on that is foolish, and immature.

Your right, people do pass driving tests and there are still plenty of driving problems but imagine how it would be if there was no driving test and only an age limit. Imagine that. It would be far worse. No tests can guarantee 100% that if you pass, you are definitely able to do something but they would be far more efficient then an age based system and they would also not discriminate like age based systems do. Think about it like this, a mentally retarded man with a history of violent crimes can easily and completely legally buy any GTA game anywhere while an honor student who has never done a single thing wrong cannot. And heres the thing with parents having full control: A parents job is to teach a child whats right and wrong but most parents attempt to implant their opinions and beliefs into children as well. For example, many parents will tell children that there is definitely a God and that they must be a catholic or they will go to Hell. This is plain wrong and should be illegal, they are clearly pushing their religious views on the child. They could say "there might be a God, and we believe that there is, but there also might not be" but no parents do that. Nobody should ever have full control over anyone else, ever. It only leads to problems.

And you pretty much confirmed what I thought about you.
I do believe in Jesus' teachings but other then that I dance to the beat of my own drum, I'm not a member of any church nor do I attend any gathering of like minded people to discuss what to hang ***** on next.
I am still dirty with some supposed "Christian" groups that burn Harry Potter books. Possibly the best chance the current generation of children have had to become literate. So no I'm not the sort of Christian that you would be refering to in a negative context.
These are simply my own views, if some whack job Christian out there agrees with me good, I might not agree with him/her on everything else but that's my perogative.
If you can't understand why children should not be able to view adult media then there's little or no helping you at all. I know there's no magic age number but we have laws that are there to protect the innocent, all I'm saying is let's respect those laws by enforcing the ratings system. This is not discrimination this is protecting the integrity of our society's future.
I do strongly believe there is a place for adult media (porn/violence/drug use) but I don't believe it should be in the hands of children ever and that's not discrimination at all. What would be cruel is showing that stuff to young developing minds. I love that artists can express themselves in our society but it should not be at the expense of one single child's mind.
IF they want to bring in a law to enforce that harder then the wishy washy cr4p that's been around before, good.
As adults we currently suffer a half assed adult games because everyone in the world's ratings boards are still of the mindset that kids are going to play these games and realistically at the moment that's true. Game designers should have the same level of freedom as Stanley Kubrick had when making movies like A Clockwork Orange or Eyes Wide Shut. Instead because we have ***** head parents buying games for kids that they shouldn't be we're stuck with games like Leisure Larry Magna Cum Laude as the pinacle of adult games (which was censored or banned every where in the world except for europe). Or the watered down clothed sex scenes and strip shows in GTAIV.
IF that makes me some sort of Christian radical (which I doubt) so be it!
I'm saying let's have adult games, but let's not let kids ever see them let alone play them.

I get both sides of the arguement, and I agree that some parents don't pay enough attention to what thier children are doing, and when there kids play these games and don't get the difference between right and wrong and have noone to explain it to, they can be confused growing up. And then your kid that you've raised right ends up in the same class as the former kid.
However, I disagree with government getting involved and telling me how to raise my kid just because someone else doesn't know how to raise thiers. It's simply a freedom I will not give up as an American.

Ok, I have read all of the posts...yes I know I have too much time on my hand...or I've had too many "Full Throttles." Whatever the case may be doesn't matter. Justin isn't being a pedo he's basically saying that just because there is an age restriction doesn't mean that everyone younger than that age is unable to comprehend the concept of make-believe. The whole childhood concept is a load of bullsh*t to a certain extent. Sure I wouldn't let a 5 year old play GTA 4 but I have definitely played rated M games since I was 8 and rated R films since I was 6. I have no desire to kill, rape, maim, or commit any violent act towards someone or even see or hear about it in reality.
Now the whole comparing teenagers and children to the african-americans of 1800s is just wrong. There is no comparison because you really don't see kids who play video games being tortured. They are simply not being allowed to play certain video games. Seriously, the majority of the children who have access to video games shouldn't even be considered in the same category as a slave because if they have access to an entertainment system then they have a HELL of a lot more freedom than a damn slave. Watch what you compare your's and other's lives to because eventually you're going to look like an incompetent moron.
I believe that parents should have control over what they expose their children to however I also believe that these parents are completely oblivious to video games and their ratings and need to be educated. It should solely be their judgement on how mature and educated their child is. I myself let my girlfriend's 10 year old brother play GTA 4 and actually regretted it after the first 10 seconds because I didn't feel he was mature enough to handle some of the dialogue. I do feel that this happened due to the mother spoiling the ever loving sh*t out of him. These kids need to be given a chance to understand that these games aren't how life is really run and therefore will gain maturity. It doesn't in any way ruin a person's "childhood" In fact, it probably improves it.

» Well what you've said there makes sense mostly
But the fact that you regretted it says to me you think you made the wrong choice.
I never said that I don't believe that children are unable to comprehend make believe. What I am concerned about is that some ideas children should simply not be exposed to. Even exposure to drug use in a make believe setting desensitises a person to it. Same with sexual encounters in a make believe setting.
If Justin isn't a pedo he certainly sympathises with their beliefs (that children can have adult relationships and that should be ok). It's not ok and it will never be ok.

Damn I forgot all about these posts, anyway I still stick to my african american comparisons. The truth is that ageism is getting worse and worse as the years go by. If we continue letting *****s like avatar76 literally think they can 'own' children and control there every move until they turn a magical number, it WILL be like the 1800s with blacks. And again, like I said before, I believe in a test/class based system, NOT AN AGE BASED ONE. Age based systems will never work. Simple as that. All people deserve the opportunity for freedom if they can handle it, they should not have to wait till they turn a certain age.

I didnt read the artical but I agree that underage kids should not be playing adult games.
Why do you think they get so censored in the first place? Coz they know morons buy games like gta for kids.
If there was an adult classification then that would be great. No more censorships and we will get games like the creators want them in the first place.
Just stop buying your 12yo 18+ games. Would you buy them beer and pornos?

I've been playing GTA since about 7 and I don't believe I've killed one person so far...?
Hell, I don't even drink alcohol unless it's for a special reason. It's funny how adults nowadays always assume that because they've already grown up, they know more than their kids, but that isn't completely true.
Recent stats show that 76% of the UK's parents admit that their children are SMARTER than them. This is because we grew up with a different background. When my Dad was younger, he used to climb trees in the forest and drive tractors, all these things that we can no longer do because ADULTS say it's too dangerous for our "fragile" minds.
I don't believe in killing someone, but I believe anyone with the amount of ignorance Jack Thompson and this guy have should be shot.

they probably don't know a thing about gaming legislation. i can assure you. if we youngsters (if they are here) grows up. we'd know what to let our child play. no games until the age of 4-6 (barbies and legos and mario). 6-10 (only pokemons) 10-15 (RPGS) 15- 18 (relaxed FPS) 18 and above (GTA for you). i am probably unfair. but. well. if this is implemented in the law. i for sure do not want to pay that huge fine.
