 It seems that New Zealand has its own game-hating Jack Thompson
counterpart. Get a load of New Zealand Chief Censor Bill Hastings, who
says parents who purchase violent video games for their children should
be prosecuted."They might think the offence is silly, but it ain't," Hastings told The Dominion Post yesterday. If someone was caught knowingly giving a minor access to restricted video games, the punishment could be up to three months imprisonment or a fine of up to US$ 10,000. Fortunately, no one has been prosecuted just yet. Hastings believes that the prosecution would send out what he calls "shock value" to other parents, which would deter them from making the same infraction. "It would send out a message that the enforcement agency means business," he said. And here's Jack Thompson:

New Zealand is just a relaxed country who know that a restricted game wont make their child grow up into murdering person. I've never heard any bad news about what gaming has done to NZ kids.
I don't give a ***** what this guy says anyway, They overcharge games here way too much so I don't think they should care what we do with the game for the price they are charging.
Street Fighter 4 = $140 NZD What the f*ck is up with that.
I'm sure he might make a few parents stop buying restricted games for their kids but I think our country knows better than to list to this guy.

If I end up getting a kid who gets interested in gaming, I don't care what he'll play as long as he/she has fun.
However, since I grew up with the older titles. I'd start my kid off playing the older titles first for a few years, then slowly progress through all the systems until getting to current gen.

The rating systems on games were put in place by the gaming company to let parents know what games are for what age groups. Companies like Nintendo or Sony don't have to even use it!
The games can be legally bought in America (I'm pretty sure New Zealand too) anywhere as long as the store permits it.

Hopefully these same kids don't have to survive in the wild and have to kill animals for food or something because all that these rules do is soften people up and make them not think of reality. I remember as a child, I used to watch a lot of horror flicks on tv and it was all in fun entertainment. Now it's sad that today children can't have the same fun without people butting in and trying to run their life. This kind of government has to stop!

When they're older they have a core personality which was based around inocence. Giving underaged children pornographic or violent material damages their psyche. Our laws recognise that a child can not be charged as an adult for an offense because of this time we call childhood where inocent mistakes can be made and forgiven.

This is basicly the same it really annoys me when i see parents of 13-16 come in to the store and buy rated M games for there kids. We are required to tell them the rating and they just shrug it off ratings DO need to be legaly inforced that ways we can get more rated M and maybe higher games in the market.

It doesn't even sound like lawmakers are trying. All they can think of is banning more and more stuff. Think outside of the box. Why not make the games in stores that are M rated (for example), be behind curtains or something. Kind of like the porn section in the video rental places. Out of site, out of mind- y'know?

Why not make the games in stores that are M rated (for example), be behind curtains or something. Kind of like the porn section in the video rental places. Out of site, out of mind- y'know?
How many kids can goto those places and rent Debbie Does Dallas? None.
Besides how much of a douche bag would you feel going into something like that and picking up "Manhunt 2" for your 5 year old?
Something like that would have more control over this kind of thing than any law that takes away parents' rights as parents.

I personally would describe childhood as the age of innocence and carelessness. Young children who are in the process of learning, and growing. Expanding on the information we feed them daily as parents, teachers and adults.
In a sense I see what you mean about grouping people by their age, but in all reality life as an adult doesn't start until you move on your own, have a job and do your own thing without support from family or anyone else. It is fair to say that at 18 you are an adult. Maybe not always in the mentality of an adult, but you are free from that point on to make your own life decisions. I think that is why it is easy to group people by their age.

I think the problem you are having Justingraziano is that you are keeping your eyes closed to the fact that this also affects not only 17 year olds, but young kids. Recent stats show that 76% of the UK's parents admit that their children are SMARTER than them. This is because we grew up with a different background. When my Dad was younger, he used to climb trees in the forest and drive tractors, all these things that we can no longer do because ADULTS say it's too dangerous for our "fragile" minds.
I don't believe in killing someone, but I believe anyone with the amount of ignorance Jack Thompson and this guy have should be shot.

they probably don't know a thing about gaming legislation. i can assure you. if we youngsters (if they are here) grows up. we'd know what to let our child play. no games until the age of 4-6 (barbies and legos and mario). 6-10 (only pokemons) 10-15 (RPGS) 15- 18 (relaxed FPS) 18 and above (GTA for you). i am probably unfair. but. well. if this is implemented in the law. i for sure do not want to pay that huge fine.
