PSP - Image 1More news from the PSP homebrew front. Mathieulh has explained on the Devsgen PSP forums that Sony has included an official ISO loader in PSP firmware versions 3.50 and 3.51. The loader is called np9660.prx and will apparently let PSP users load ISO files off their memory sticks.

The first explanation that comes to mind regarding the official ISO loader is that Sony is planning to release downloadable PSP titles either through PSN or a similar service geared exclusively for the PSP. The company has already mentioned earlier this year that a download service for the PSP is in the works.

French PSP news site PSP-Generation also notes that Dark AleX and Mathieulh will be patching the np9660.prx file for use in custom firmware 3.51 OE.

Thanks to whoelse for the tip.

Dan asked "could we exploit this and load lumines iso and downgrade or something cause lumines is gone everywhere?"

It sounds like you want a UMD-less way of using the Lumines exploit. If that's the case, the answer is no. You'll need Lumines to downgrade first, and then you can install 3.51OE. It doesn't work the other way around.

Im still at 3.03 OE-C. its much easier to use and install things like custom xmbs, im pretty sure alot of people are still at 303OEC.

but what I dont get is this update. why would sony do this? dont they know that iso loading on psps mainly deals with playing copied games?? this would seem like a bad idea, unless they were planning to put some kind of security check on the iso's like with the ps1 emlator.

   Re: vincent (Unregistered) - 2007-07-01

Truthfully you have no idea what an iso loader is. The psx loader is an iso loader but the iso's they use are encrypted and its a custom file format. This would be the same and this would allow people to buy games off the PSN store and upload to their memsticks. The games will probably only register to one PSP and other psp's trying to access the same file on the same memstick would probably be denied.

you know that could be a cool thing, but i would ask dark alex to not unlock it, i dont want people pirating easier. I do want it to be avialable by sony. you may think it would be cool but to me it just doesnt seem right to unlock to the public. I understand that the PS1 emulator should be unlocked because its an old system with no new content being released on it, but if you unlock somehtign that allows anyone to play any new game without buying it... well you see where that COULD be really bad for the industry right?

   Re: Sentinel (Unregistered) - 2007-07-01
 » My 2 cent...

I think this is Sony's way of attempting to go head to head with CFW users.
They'll probably begin to incorporate CFW features to their official FW releases.
It makes sense, Imagine having the feature of CFW (ISO loader, executing un-signed codes/homebrews, 333mhz, etc..) on an official Sony FW. What would you need to run CFW for if that's the case?
The only thing I can imagine is the custom XMB themes. I don't think Sony FW would EVER support access on Flash (1 + 2) files. But then again, a year ago, I would've never though Sony would ever release an ISO loader. But it's here now...
If not, Sony would probably re-write their FW to support customization (XMB, gameboots, etc...) via the memstick or even the flash itself.

I think this isn't a mistake from Sony that everybody is claiming it to be.
It's probably an attempt to better their services and features which also in the same time have an official FW that could stand a chance with CFW.
If my theories are even close to the truth, then this has got to be the beginning of Sony MOST EFFECTIVE/REALISTIC approach towards CFW users.
Perhaps Sony PSP Project leaders had FINALLY realize that ISO loaders and un-signed codes are here to stay for good. Why compete with it if that's what's the public/users REALLY wants. So they might as well accept their losses and cooperate this feature and who knows probably ditch it/enhance it later on when no other devs could be bothered cause Sony just adapts on CFW's main feature.
(As any major industries does once they have complete control of the situation)
Because right now, I think CFW Scene is MUCH larger and BETTER than what Sony had EVER release(d).
Why else would Sony release an ISO loader module?
Would the head CEO's and board leaders even approve something like this if they don't have something BIG in mind?
As yourself this. If you get the same (and legal) features that CFW benifits from future official Sony official FW's. Wouldn't you just do the right thing and support the company's FW releases instead that brought the idea/unit in to the real world in the first place?

Think about it...

Re: mr toasty (Unregistered) - 2007-07-01
 » jixxer

it really doesn't make a difference. It's already extremely easy to pirate PSP games. Usually a matter of downloading a CSO off a torrent site and putting it in a special folder on the memory stick.

That's a pretty sweet thing to add I guess, us guys using 1.5 and custom firmwares have been doing it for awhile now. I'm guessing this will work like the PS1 Emulator though, you're probably going to have to have a special file to play it or some BS. I'm glad I have a CFW, I couldn't imagine not being able to play my backed up games = load times on UMD are horrible.

Sony should make i so you can play and rip any iso from a umd.
They should just make it so you have to put in he umd of the game you want to play but it will load from the mem stick.
That would be a sweet feature.
and they could make it so you could copy __% of the game to the memory sick for faster loading.

   Re: pj1115 (Unregistered) - 2007-07-01

You're right. SCE will not allow you to execute unofficially created disk images. They will likely be in a closed-source format, and will definitely be encrypted. Besides, we have an ISO loader already. DaX is patching this probably for the same reason he patched the PSX loader - so we can use the official ones without authorization.

   Re: whoelse (Unregistered) - 2007-07-01

If you have UMD games already, then you probably already have a PSP anyway. Though yeah, if you bought a thin version and it had no UMD player, then you couldnt. Maybe they should make a UMD add-on for a non-UMD thin PSP.
