Recently PSP Developer Dark Alex announced he was leaving the homebrew scene to pursue other endeavors, noting conflicting differences between Sony and developers who decide to expand their console to its full potential via homebrew in their spare time. This left many PSP gamers wondering what would happen with the OE aka Open Edition, the PSP custom firmware which he worked on. As it stood the Open Edition firmware source code had never been made public, which means that no further work could continue and no future custom firmware revisions in the Open Edition line would be released.

PSP Open Edition Firmware is now Open Source - Image 1However, in an unusual turn of events Team Wildcard, who had been working on reverse engineering 3.10 and 3.40 OE firmware, in addition a new custom firmware has decided to release the source code to their work thus far.

"We had to release our work because of a leak done by a lame website which we wont name in order not to bring visitors there. This work was a full 3.10 and 3.40OE reverse done by us as well as new features for a future custom firmware which was meant to be closed source."

The perpetrator (who will remain unmentioned) used a exploit in another PSP website database to hijack one of the Team's accounts and gain access to the teams work, which then was posted on the perpetrator's website without the developers permission. Thus prompting Team Wildcard to make an official release of their work in progress for the rest of the PSP community to benefit from.

Shady PSP websites and drama aside, Team Wildcard's now official release contains source code which is sure to be of particular interest to anyone who dabbles in custom PSP firmware development or modification. In addition to the reversed 3.10 and 3.40 OE firmware, they have also released work on features which were to be built into a new custom firmware.

Team Wildcard's source code, which mathieulh informs us "The code is legit. It is a complete reverse of the OE and other stuffs." could possibly be used by PSP developers to further the Open Edition PSP custom firmware development unofficially or to create a new custom firmware using contributed code. Well folks, It looks like new custom editions (and additions) to the OE firmware might be back on the menu.

Note: Even if you know the website that was involved in leaking Team Wildcard's custom firmware development work DO NOT mention it in the comments and keep it to yourself. Not doing so may result in loss of commenting privileges and is also going against the developers wishes.

 » There is some truth

.... It's true that sony will look at the code but on thing I don't get is.. CAN'T SonY reverse enginer OE firmware ? (I am sure that those sony programers TEAM can do it) so really this does not help sony much ... but will help more to people like booster, and new programer that want to try to to go into cfw coding.

Let's face reality booster can emulate new firmware without problem..but he CAN NEVER make the PS1 pops to work because of "keys/encryption" with this maybe booster can do it finally EMULATE pops.. :D

But there might be a chance that sony can't reverse enginere...so they dont' know how DAX break the pops code... then we are in big trouble....

I mean.. the psp1 pops still work because of dax previous coding..if they come up with new pops protection..I don't think ANYone..can hack it...

This file release here can be a Double Edge Sword , (it can help the community or ruin it)

Let's hope it's for "helping" :)

 » yup

if you have done ANY coding that you don't want released, then you will understand why it pisses coders off, they spend hours if not DAYS coding this stuff, and they know they won't get paid, but they do it because its for people to enjoy and their way to give back, by getting ripped, it doesn't help encourage them to keep coding.
my conspricy theory for the day: Sony sent out hackers to rip these guys code,by doing that they are preventing (or trying to) stop another custom firmware

>: makes me sick
I hope you sue em for this Wildcard

Well This seems to be a good sign that others are working hard to reverse engineer DA's CFW. It is a shame that the news was released because of leaked information but oh well, whats done is done. Oh btw, wtf to the post above saying remove it.....its not gonna stop future cfw from being made....it will actually help it. This is something Sony has nothing they can do to stop.

it's good that this is out there, but i would prefer dax's original work, rather than reverse engineered code. the more oe's the better

 » Fools

Doesnt it seem fishy that this has come up after the CFW has started to evolve forward since DA left? Also just think if he left due to issues with Sony would it not be likely that they could have gotten their hands on his work which was the reason for him leaving. This would make it easy for them to catch the next fool in line to try and copy the work of DA with his source codes.

For those who say do not leak this source because Sony will get their hands on it. Think about for a sec...what Sony's engineers could not reverse D_A work themselves. In fact they have done so since the beginning of the CFW/OE.

   by Ranguvar (Unregistered) - 2007-08-06
 » ...

While it's sad that some lamer had to hack/release the source...

Open-source is the way of the future.

All in all, this will hugely benefit the community. This means more custom firmwares, which means more options, and hopefully those new CF's will also release their source.

So, everyone wins, everyone gets better features.

1 Anyone could reverse engineer Dax's work with some skills.

2. STUPID FOOLS, if this get's in the wrong hands Dax WILL be sued, that's what you want ?

He is legally responsible for this firmware and any harm to Sony Corporation worldwide.

I hate those lamers. It's best NOT to leak anything anymore.

What kind of idiot writes garbage like that? If Sony was going to take any legal action against Dark AleX, they would do so on the basis of his work and their investigations; not the work of some group claiming to have disassembled his released code. You even recognize this when you say "Anyone could reverse engineer" his work. Gee, you need to stop with the toothgrinding and bedwetting, kid.

I am the 42nd person to post. 42 is my favorite number and I will not post if I can't be 42. This is good and bad all in one. good that oe development will/can continue. bad that sony will get ahold of it and reverse reverse engineer it to prevent any further cracking by the teams around today. take it down qj, take it down. as a concerned pspupdates reader for the last two years, pplease for the love of god(dark alex) take it down. we want further oe fw but sony will definitely figure out how to block this now and with the up and coming 64mb of ram to be on the psp2000 this will help them to prevent it from becming an oe. the next fw number is 4.20.

   Re: I (Unregistered) - 2007-08-06
 » Agree.

I totally agree with you soopergooman qj should take this off before Sony gets there hands on it! I would really like to have my new psp (when it comes out) with oe fw as does everyone else so please take it off.

   Re: :tards (Unregistered) - 2007-08-07
» Sounds like bloody Father Jack!

Reverse reverse (nuns) engineer! Yes! We should prevent Sony from ever *forward* engineering anything!

Newsflash for you dullards: Sony owns the copyright on Sony PSP firmware and can engineer it anytime they want, forward, reverse, sideways, submerged, on crack, or anything!

Sheesh. Go and play with your dollies, kids.

 » Source Code is great

It's better to have the source in the open and free.

The more people working on it the better it will get and the more choices we will have at what we want to run.

The more people involved someday sony will get the idea of delivering what the consumers want.

   by freyyr890 (Unregistered) - 2007-08-06
» A step in the right direction.

Those of you who condemn this to a bad idea clearly don't know what you're talking about.

There is nothing wrong with a source release. FOSS is the way of the future. Now that the code is out there, people can develop and modify it as they please.

I'll admit, most of this source is over my head, but it's understandable.

Pretty soon we could even be getting into the golden setting - many teams with their own versions of the firmware and weekly builds. Competition is good.

I think things will change after that release and i´m not sure in what way ... i think in a bad way

   Re: :tards (Unregistered) - 2007-08-07
 » Which bad way?

Like, the way to San Jose? That sort of a bad way? Or the way your uncle looks at you and puts his hand on your thigh? That sort of bad way? I'd say you're just not sure of *anything*.

omg dark alex got hacked xD

   Re: ugh (Unregistered) - 2007-08-06
 » ugh

not anymore illegal than any of the other stuff on here...

worse case scenario: sony uses this to stop OE from working on the PSP all together with future firmware updates. which is possible.

and no matter what anyone says, another custom firmware is the LAST thing we need.

   Re: blade2577 (Unregistered) - 2007-08-06
 » I just that a while back

more cfw are not needed, one main one has made everyone happy for now and having two will just split us in between in choosing. and it's pointless +/

for everyone that wants multiple cfw what about if they separate you between your two fav. games?

i posted this back on the website that wasn't named but they just deleted the post lol. guess no one can defy the admin or he throws a fit XD.

Imagine two diff. cfw from two games like FFVII and Chrono Cross. And imagine one plays one but not the other and vice versa. choosing between playing those two games might just 'cause me to revert back to 3.40-OE or something. it's ghey. either way I'm staying with Team m33 cfws
   by jchaike (Unregistered) - 2007-08-06
 » well...

i dont think M33 CFW is the best it can be. I think DA's cfw will continue to be superior, other then the fact that M33 will continue releasing newer CFWS for newer firmware allowing us to play UMDS that require us to upgrade our fws.

But personally...i dont even use my psp for new games anymore, just internet, the current games i have, and emulators

How the fruck is 64mb ram going to stop the CFW?!?

@the few who think sony can now stop it:
Very unlikely, $ony will only use harder encryption, which the psar can be modded to decrypt.

   Re: nieve (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10

yeah .. its as easy as that .. sony press the big red "encrypt" button and ship the psp's. then the community press the big green "decrypt" button and its all done.. magic
