Pmp_mod_1.02

Raphel and argandona from PS2Dev forum has released PMP Mod 1.02 M4.02g3 for PSP. PMP Mod 1.02 M4.02g3 is a modded version of Jonny’s PMP Mod 1.02, a very famous full-resolution video player that is much better than MPEG4 or even AVC version the PSP originally supports. Here are the details:

Here is the waited for malloc MOD+GUI version of jonnys latest 1.02 PMPMOD.
This is version PMPMOD M4.02g3, thus contains all mods from mallocs M4 plus a bugfixed g3 GUI version with these fixes:

- Timezone bug fixed, time is now displayed correctly in file list
- Battery Time display bug after unplugging the power cable fixed
- Playtime display bug with some videos in infobar fixed (Silent Hill Trailer of jo2k)
- Fixed malloc_64 bug not allowing some videos to play on GUI version
- Fixed 0-size POS file creation bug
- Fixed color display bug when exchanging mallocs infobar interface with a non greyscale version
- increased responsiveness of the filelist, but lowered responsiveness of the triangle button for playlist add/remove because it was too easily double triggered
- Added a counter for number of playlist items

Thanks to malloc for merging my M4g2 code with jonnys 1.02 :) so I could concentrate on the actual fixes.

Can anyone post a link to directions on how to install this? I checked everywhere, including PSP Updates and the creators site but couldn't find anything.

This is the main reason I stay at 1.5. Great work guys!

Any news on compatibility with the eLoader for gta?

I'm thinking of downgrading from 2.0. I only upgraded for AVC videos. Do PMP's really look that much better? And does the higher resolution create massive file sizes as compared to AVC or does it compress them or something? Thanks for any help with this!

jerlandon.

I converted the DVD "Closer" to pmp last night following the excellent guide from max that was posted at pspupdates yesterday. FYI... I started encode at 12:30AM my time. when I awoke at 7:00am the encode was just finishing.

Final file size is 902mb... but god damn was it worth it. Audio is louder, clearer and the video quality difference is truly amazing.

Personally, i'm doubting it's worth for full length movies, less maybe sci-fi and action flicks... but there is no argument that this is the closest-to-umd experience available on the psp bar-none.

Looks as good or better then UMD video. PMP>AVC. File size is good too.

Thank you fixing the bugs such as the time zone bug and the display current date bug (European vs. USA display).

There is one bug that I noticed - the file creation date is still fixed as a European date display. Could you please fix the code so that the file creation date is read from the PSP hardware setting. That way, the date will be displayed correctly according to the local display for date.

In the U.S. the date is displayed opposite of the European way.

For example - February 4th would be displayed in the U.S. as 2/4/2006 while in Europe it is displayed as 4/2/2006.

Thank you on creating this kick ass mod. I love it and hope that you will fix the above mentioned bug. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

slokoski, apparently you can encode your video to include the subs from your dvd if you follow max's guide.

Hey Guys,
I wonder how to demux the pmp files if something goes wrong with the encoding and you already have deleted the necessary avi files for reasons of space.
Sometimes had problems with audio sync and had to encode the whole video again which took 8 hours. Would have been easier with a demuxer or is there already a command for that within pmp muxer ?

you see now this is a hombrew worth raving about, unlike PSP-OSS or PSIX which everyone will argue till their dying day about, but they actually dont perform any usefull functions.

I see that some of you have different methods and ways to convert your divx/xvid videos and even DVD(VOB)files to the PMP format for Johnny's PMP MOD player. Some of the methods some of you use may be simple enough by following the online guide that was provided by max, but still may be a lengthy process from ripping, to encoding, and finally converting to the desired results that you want to have in your video.
For example, it shouldn't take 7 or 8 hours to convert a full DVD movie to a PMP video file.

I'd like to share with you all, methods that I have used to cut down on the length of time that it takes to encode a full length movie from DVD and convert it to a format that the PSP can use. I'll start first with saying that it is more conventional to use the MP4 (MPEG 4) format to create movies with and still be able to retain DVD audio and video quality, while keeping the size minimal so that it can fit both on a 512MB and 1GB Mem Stick.
I wouldn't advise at all to use the method of converting a movie straight from DVD to PMP format cause the file size may exceed or go over the limit of what your Mem stick can hold. And to quote one user here: Chris (SupaDawg) said...

" I converted the DVD "Closer" to pmp last night following the excellent guide from max that was posted at pspupdates yesterday. FYI... I started encode at 12:30AM my time. when I awoke at 7:00am the encode was just finishing.

Ok, so here are some of the methods I use to cut back on time and size and still achieve the kind of quality that I am going for:

I use ImTOO DVD Ripper which allows me to not only choose what I want to convert, but also what codec I want to use as I'm converting my movie, and a choice to choose type of language and subtitles if I want them as well. Also, I have a preview and estimated length of time from start to finish to see the whole process in work. For example, I encode with the Divx codec (but you can choose to use whatever codec you like), when using this program.

Next, after the process of the DVD movie has been converted to Divx the final file size averages 600-700MB, a fair size to fit onto a CD-R.
I then take the newly converted Divx movie which I just made, and I run it through PSP Video 9 using these settings:

Resolution: Good For 16:9 content (HDTV, PDTV, DS, DVD, Widescreen)
Video Quality: Normal - More Fluid
Audio Quality: Normal - Stereo

After it finishes converting to MP4 (MPEG-4)format, the final size I achieve is 300-500MB for a full length movie. A perfect fit for a 512MB or a 1GB Mem stick. The Custom Bitrate I use in PSP Video 9 is Video = 480 kbps, Audio = 32 kbps
The time that it takes for me to use both ImTOO DVD Ripper and PSP Video 9:
1 hour movie = 1 hour to encode to divx + 1 hour to convert to MP4 format. Total Time = 2 hours from start to finish.
A 2 hour movie would take 2 hours to encode to Divx, and 2 hours to convert to MP4, totalling a time of 4 hours in total.

Now, for what I use to make converting PMP videos for use with PMP MOD v1.02:

3GP Converter v0.34
PMP Muxer 1.02
Transcoding_PMP_mod_v1.ini (not included in 3GP Converter, need to download this seperately).

For this example I made a high quality video from an existing Transformers (G1)Season 1 Episode which was originally encoded in Divx format. The file size of the Divx video was 170MB. When I ran it through 3GP Converter v0.34 to convert it to PMP format, the final size came out to 167MB.

Here is what I did to achieve this:

Took pmp_muxer.exe and pmp_muxer_tk.exe and placed them both in GP_Converter034cores (this folder is created when you unzip 3GP Converter). Then downloaded the file, Transcoding_PMP_mod_v1.ini and placed it inside GP_Converter034default_setting.

Next, ran setup.exe inside the 3GP_Converter directory. Chose "Model: PMP, for jonny's PMP mod v1.00."
Ran 3GP_Converter.exe. Chose my selected video output; which is "16:9 23.976fps @ 896kbps(2-PASS)," for widescreen.
Dragged and Dropped my file to convert into the Drag and Drop window of 3GP Converter and started up the process of converting to PMP.

I was amazed at the quality of the final results. Video and Audio were both crystal clear.

I totally agree with what Chris (SupaDawg)said in his comments, " Personally, i'm doubting it's worth for full length movies, less maybe sci-fi and action flicks... but there is no argument that this is the closest-to-umd experience available on the psp bar-none. "

Precisely ! IMO, I think the PMP format is best left for short TV shows or Anime if you like, but for full length movies it's best to stick to just using MP4 format.

For those that wish to use 3GP Converter to encode their videos to PMP format in an easier method, you can get the PMP transcoding configuration file from this link here: http://rapidshare.de/files/10363653/Transcoding_PMP_mod_v1.ini.html

Hope this helps everyone out ;)

How do you get it to work? i have installed the homebrew in my psp/game folder.. and i have tried placing AVI, WMV video files to the psp/video folder but still when i run the PMPmod i cant see the files. the playlist is empty. i have tried with all video formats but nothing. how do i make this promising homebrew application to work? help pls! and what do i do with the source code download? do i have to place the contents in a folder inside the memory stick? pls help...

   by supersonic (Unregistered) - 2006-02-02

WOW! Impressively detailed explanation!
Thanks a lot for that. Will try it out now. I always use PMP for full length movies because I really think that the quality is superior over mp4 and for me quality is everything.
I don't mind having 1gb sized movies as I'm going to get a portable hard drive to carry my movies around.

"Personally, i'm doubting it's worth for full length movies, less maybe sci-fi and action flicks... "

Converting from DVD to standard MP4 will take just as long and the output file will be roughly just as large, for a drastic drop in resolution & detail.

It's a no brainer. That and 320x240 looks like crap after using PMP Mod. I will never go back to avc mp4 ever again thanks to jonny. :)

when will this work on 2.0, or will it ever work in kernel mode?

   by prchulo (Unregistered) - 2006-02-02

actually i did my own test mp4 vs psp mod and found out that the pspmod was better. I converted the incredibles using the tutorial by max dvd to psp and oh my god the psp mod looked liked a umd movie. first of all you can adjust the bitrate, on the turorial max uses 1300 bit rate thats why people are getting huge movies. There is a tab to change bit rate i used 905kbps bit rate on both mp4 and pspmod. I found that the movie on psp mod looked sharper and brighter than mp4. Not to mention it was also smaller in size than mp4. One other thing is that psp mod has cool features like adjusting the brightness of the movie and volume to make it sound way louder than original. I too was a skeptic but just see for yourself and covert both mp4 and pspmod using the same bitrate and iam sure you too will see the difference.

people have SOOO many different methods and settings. there should be a thread for all this

and does anyone know of a GOOD program to convert to AVC with? Ive been using Max Media Manager, and its kind of sucky.

any GOOD alternatives out there?

I like PMP a lot but I did some testing, and I think AVC on highest quality looks about the same as med quality pmp format, and a little smaller on top.
the only thing I DON'T like better about AVC so far is that one can't jack up the volume by considerable amounts like you can with Mp4s made with pspvideo9 or PMPs.

AVC converter anyone?
