Kas Hirai showed off the upcoming PS1 emulator for the PSP at E3 tonight, giving PSP fans everywhere something to look forward to. He downloaded the game to the PSP's Memory Stick, chose the game from the PSP's menu and started playing. The title he demonstrated was the original Ridge Racer for PS1 and according to all accounts the game ran smoothly and looked great on the PSP.

This is good news for all of us who have been waiting to learn more about Sony's PS1 emulator for PSP. Now all we need to know is how much it's going to cost to download games!

Interesting. So they're demonstrating it now? And one already runs smoothly? My only hope is FF7 comes out for download. That does, and I will finally believe there is a god out there. Playing FF7 on the go...just WOW.

A PS1 emulator is much better then any homebrew out there. being able to play FVII on the PSP would be so godly id buy a 2nd psp for it.

» Time to buy another PSP

Yep this is gunna need a new firmware to run I bet....but the devs have got a lot on their plates with this one!

 » My hopes.

I watched this live and yes it looks amazing, but my real hope is that we get alot of games for no, or atleast a reasonable price. I wish they'd just allow for the conversion of games, and the option to remap controls so you can choose when you need the R2 L2 and such.

 » Questions...

Here are some questions I have for $ony..

How much will each game cost?
How big will the games be?
Will you be able to transfer them off the memory card (backup)?
If you can back them up, what would prevent people from "sharing"? The only thing I can think off is the encrypted file will somehow "tie" itself to your MAC address. What else is unique to each psp?

I will be getting Suikoden 1 & 2 if they are not released in english on UMD by then. :P

I'm buying a nes psp tpday from a dude at school, just in the nick of time. To bads it's a 1.50 and I'll have to up grade it since I already have a 1.50. Sike If it was I would never up grade it, but it's already at 2.50 so it will probally stay there untill this ps1 emulator comes out.

 » PS1 Nice but...

PS1 emulator sounds nice... but...

-Chances are, there will be a playable homebrew PS1 emulator which will allow you to keep all your current homebrew and you won't pay overinflated prices (and use your legally ripped isos from your old ps1).

-N64 emulator!!!

-SNES emulator!

-No other homebrew of any kind (at least until a new exploit is found) which means no more psp stepmania :(

I'll stick with 1.5, thank you very much :)

PS1 has tons of great games, reguardless of graphics, the games are still fantastic. this is going to be one major psp update feature, in my eyes, and may be a key in getting me to upgrade from 1.5.. or just buy a 2nd psp!

   by drew4237 (Unregistered) - 2006-05-09
 » yeah

i am not gonna upgrade for a ps1 emu. it might be because i never owned a ps1 or am i really into the whole ff series but anygame that i would really have to play that is ps1 i could just find it for really cheap at a store adn play it on my ps2 and who really needs portable ps1 games anyways

   by Illegal Machine - 2006-05-09
» Now heres the real question...

Does anyone think that this emulator will open the door for homebrew on 2.7+??

I'm hoping that someone figures out how to hack this, and then EVERYONE can upgrade/enjoy all the homebrew... It would be nice to have all the new features/codecs, AND all my emulators too... Now it would be a realllly hard decision if that meant that I had to say goodbye to my iso loader.

Would you trade iso loaders for JUST homebrew?

 » Oh I forgot....

How many games can something like this support anyway???

FF7 was something like 2+ gigs and on 3 discs.

And Armored Core uses L2, and R2. so that's out... so are Colony Wars, and Blast Radius for the same reason.

I dunno how excited I am for the actual emulator... maybe just the possibility of a new exploit

 » HOMBREW HISTORY

Maaan I would love to play nightmare creatures and twisted metal one or two on my psp. But Hombrew enabled psps are priceless right about now. They practically can go in a museum. They Show how far weve come as gamers and programers. Some dedicate their life to hombew and its because of the psps now that we know great guys like pocs and regible. Sorry. Ima buy a second psp so i can play all of the newest games and such.........yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!

i saw this it ran at atleast 60 fps it ran really smooth if its impossible for 60 den sorry dun flame me but thats how smooth it ran and sound was perfect also i doubt it would open ***** for 2.7 no offense but remember wit loco roco it was signed by sony thats the reason it worked i think itll be the same with this id like it to open a way for homebrew but i doubt it i just hope someone would be able to see how they made this emu or something like studying the files maybe and making a free version of it that would be nice

 » Awsome.

I want to play vigante 8 or any rpg game like tales of legenia or legend of dragoon. Those games are awsome.

 » 1.5 4 life b1tch35

i think once this is released and the hackers get a hold of it, us 1.5lifers will have acces to a ps1 emu.
and i bet our version will own sony's. imagine the possibilties....
probably rip iso right off our old ps1 discs
copy thier emu n make it better
all the hombrew ish we've come to love...

man thx sony but homebrew owns ur a$$

 » ~sigh~

to all the people that say they wanna play the big rpg's it all comes back to how will you possibly fit (esp legend of dragoon which is 4 discs ~2.6gb?) on a memory stick granted all of us who have a 1.5 use atleast a gig but theres no way i'm shelling out another 200+ for a 4gb memory stick. and as people have said theres no way i'm giving up all the homebrew that i have on the 1.5.

This is starting to sound like when sony announced the AVC codec compatibilty or the browser or even the flash player ~sigh~

   by douche (Unregistered) - 2006-05-09
» 1 gig will probably do the trick

I doubt memory stick space will be as big of an issue as you think. You have to consider that when those games were made they didn't have the compression technology that we have today.

» $ony, give it a rest and allow homebrew on 2.7

If you had to chose between a limited amount of priced ps1 roms and an entire library of n64, snes, nes, genesis, neo geo, and hombrew games which would you chose? I think we all now what $ony hopes we answer. If you have a 2nd psp go for it if you dont mind paying for games that you already own. My guess is the roms will be worth 10$.
