PS1P new version depends on users' suggestions - Image 1Homebrew developer ZodTTD just announced that Anonymous Coder is back and is ready to work on PS1P application again. For PSP owners new to the PSP homebrew scene, the said application was a pre-Popstation PS1 emulator for the PlayStation Portable.

ZodTTD also shared that Anonymous Coder wouldn't be working alone on PS1P this time as he had decided to re-unite with the psx4all team. Even as of this writing, the whole team is hard at work - doing some debugging and possibly a PDA port for PS1P.

And what about the PSP scene you ask? Well, here's ZodTTd has got to say about that:

Sure we have Popstation, but there comes a time when it's done for homebrew sake. So I, ZodTTD, will leave it up to you the reader, to decide whether we chalk one up for homebrew, or let an existing commercial emulator lead the way for PSP emulation. Your feedback will be directly related to what we do with this project.

If you are interested for this project to push through, leave comments or suggestions here or at the developers' personal online site via the Read link below.

 » why?

what could it do that popstation can't do & if there's nothing, surely not that many people would use it? a bit like devhook nowadays, great app but fairly pointless for most people.

wouldn't your efforts be better spent & better appreciated by working on something new, i.e. something that the PSP doesn't already have?

 » ..

agree. It's cool to know that the team is working again but Popstation can play every game fine ( well, mostly) and there's no need for another emu.

So I appreciate your hard work,

 » .

Actually, with the PSP emulator, games that can't change discs using Popstation would be able to change discs, and most multidisc games on the PSX force you to change discs.

Final Fantasy isn't the only decent RPG series on the PSX. There are plenty of better ones infact. Some are actually multi disc. Grandia and Wild ARMs 2 for example.

Anyways. While the emulator is a good idea for changing discs. I do agree with robbuccket. Bringing something new to the PSP scene would be alot better.

I can't talk unfortunately seeing as I'm terrible when it comes to any sortof programming and wouldn't know the first step.

So I appreciate your hard work, but a Playstation 2 Emu would be way cooler xD

*Only kidding*

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-16
 » with all due respect,

I think that all we need you to do is to "reverse engineer" popstation, and add the following features, if implementable:

- save states

- slow down/ speed up (I guess frame skip is what it's called)

- maybe a "playback mode" and "record mode", you know, the stuff used for tool assisted speedruns. It's be fun if it was possible.

BUT, thanks for your willingness to further the development of the homebrew community.

 » Not a Joke

I think the popstation is adiquate. I would love to see a team though make a 3DO emulator or a working port of freeDO. The 3DO is one of the consoles I play the most and I would love to have it in a portable form.

Otherwise focus on making an emulator which can handle Um Jammer Lammy or Vib Ribbon, I'm kinda annoyed the PSP still cannot play either game.

I will wait and see what is the new about this, i will rather happy if there is like save state feature like the pc versions of emulators. by in the end lets just wait and try that project.

We already have a perfect PS1-emulator for the PSP and no one needs another emulator. So instead of wasting your talent and time, continue another project or start off a new one.

They should be adding features to popstation, custom firmware style. Like Pocketstation support, save states, multiplayer, disc switching, etc

I'd sell my soul to the devil if it gets me a fully functional Chrono Cross on PSP. POPStation has issues - I want to see the homebrew devs rub yet ANOTHER crushing defeat in sony's face.
I really can't stress this enough: This needs to be made!

   Re: akuma2099 - 2007-10-16

The homebrew devs have already rubbed it in the face of Sony by allowing us to use our own PS1 games on the PSP. We don't have to wait for them to decide what games get released through the online store.

CC works on the psp... pretty perfectally last time I checked... Theres about a dozen ways to get it working the way you'd want it. Especially if you can use popsloader on your psp :D

or an N64 emulator? I mean if your skills are up to the task of making an emulator for the playstation, then surely you can make one for the N64

   Re: enigmaticdude - 2007-10-16
 » i completely agree

the last i heard, current cfw's already let you play psone games, so why ressurect this app? Sony kinda beat you to it. and its pretty close to flawless emulation.

 » Regarding disc changes

wasn't the disc changing issue addressed?? I thought you could change discs with popstation now since it saves an actual 15 block memory card file.

I recall playing ehrgeiz and seeing my suikoden save from in-game.

   Re: kupomogli - 2007-10-16

You can only change discs for games that allow you to save before the disc change screen. The FF games are an example. You can't switch discs with games that ask you to switch discs midgame.

The PS1 emulator was really slow and unfinished by the last update. I'd rather use POPstation.

I logged into PSN finally and looked into the selection of PS1 games available for legal download recently. What a joke. I have triple that amount of games ripped onto my hard drive already I can put onto my PSP any time, and they're much better games than what sony chose to offer.

 » Why? - exactly!

You can't reinvent the wheel. Unless you can IMPROVE on it, why bother?

But don't me stop you from trying though.

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-16
 » wheel

like you said, it's all about improvements. The original wheel was simply a round stone or wooden object that easily broke in half. Later, spokes were added to help them work better, and later, tires were made... And in the future, they'll leave flames whereever you go, furthering our need to destroy the earth... Wait, what?!

...

...

Riiiigggghhhhtttt....

so, anyway, i think what I was trying to say is that they shouldn't do a complete overhaul, rather they should add functions to Sony's noobish attempt at a PS1 emulator (sorry, I like to make fun of sony for being corporate thugs).
   by Tristanm - 2007-10-16
 » .

I think if they can create an emulator that can run games on the level of Popstation, they should go for it. Popstation still has issues with many games, and Sony is not going to fix them unless they are planning to release that game. Chrono Cross is a perfect example. A homebrew alternative would be good because they could get better compatibility, and they'd be more apt to update their emulator than Sony. I say go for it.

Anonymous Coder, and PSX4ALL team...

Prove everybody here wrong! I'd love to see a really good homebrew PS1 Emulator working for the PSP, PDA, GP2X, etc.

why not, i'd love to see how a homebrew version turns out. Maybe you could add better support for PAL games, or different control configs. Just see how it goes...

 » To heck with POPStation--Bring on PS1P

I, for one, am glad that Anonymous Coder is going back into the fray. And to heck with everyone who claims that POPSstation is all you need. Me, I can't get games like Ghost in the Shell, X2, or Skullmonkeys to run on POPStation. I always get a stuttering crash on GITS, X2 and Butagei go white when actual gameplay begins, and Skullmonkeys just plain doesn't work on POPS.

Good on ya, Anonymous Coder! I'll be looking forward to the next version of PS1P. It shouldn't take much effort to make the emulator run "Klaymen Klaymen" or "Prism Land Story" at full speed (even without sound).

We seriously need this emulator ! Im probably repeating what a majority of people already said; however, its the truth. :p Sony's Popstation is awesome; however, not only is disc switching a problem; but, there several titles that still dont work for it. Dont know about you, id kill to get Megaman X3 and Ninpu Sentai Hurricanger working on PSP. Plus who knows, maybe a little multiplayer action in the future. ^_^ Best of luck and thank you for revivng the project ! :D

i get the whole "shoving it in sony's face" thing, but really- is this the best use of your time and talent? also- the savestate feature is really not that great- it actually takes the fun out of a lot of games...

that said- go for it if this is what you want to do. i think anyone willing to create free software- especially software that *can* compete with sony...

   by weapon33 - 2007-10-16
 » ugh

they didn't ask if what emulator we'd like for christmas they asked if they should pick ps1p back up. quit asking for them to start an emulator they have no code or work into. plus 3do totally sucked. if you're not interested in easier to use saves/ states, increased compatibility, remapable controls, then shhhhh, don't ruin it for the rest of us. actually popstation, while awesome, was stumbled upon, and could use a lot of the awesome features we use in other emulators.

» MAME is what we need!

why not team up with TTYMAN and work on a full mame for PSP? we have playstation games on the psp.

although TTYMAN has produced a decent attempt at a mame emulator, it's rather limited, mainly to the old smaller arcade games.

Twould be nice to have virtually every arcade cabinet on your psp, would it not?

   Re: labowl - 2007-10-17
 » Dc emu

Mame would be cool :p. But what about a dreamcast emu, i know that the dreamcast is 128 bit and everything but sureley it would be possible say if they found a way to tone down the graphics on games like shenmue just like you do with pc games.

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-17
 » reminder

We *might* get a dreamcast emulator...

Don't forget, prior to the days of Daedalus when only "monkey" was around (or whatever the name of that discontinued emulator was), people said "no use in trying to make an n64 emulator. it's impossible. We'll never have a full speed emulator for n64, let alone one that can run at half speed". And sure enough, daedalus came around, and can run many games at full speed. It's pretty likely to be the next Dgen in terms of compatibility and speed. And don't forget the unhackable TA 082 motherboards which were hacked after just a few months. And then we had the unhackable 3.50+ firmwares, which got hacked.

Just give it some time, and we'll get it eventually.
   by WACOMalt - 2007-10-17
» go for it, but my hopes are low.

As much as I love seeing homebrewers own sony time after time, I dont feel that a "perfect" homebrew PS1 emulator is very realistic. Correct me if I'm wrong (and I might be) but isnt PS1 harder to decode and emulate than N64? And Daedalus is still far from being as good at N64 games as pops is at PSX (Sony made it... of course they could figure it out.. it's their system for crying out loud, and it still has problems!) Not saying it can't be done, but I dont think it is realistic to wait for this, as It would probably never deliver. I agree that focus should be on fixing sony's mistakes on pops, and adding disk swap, multiplayer, maybe more save formats for easy transfer from PC emulators, and maybe add different iso compression methods? Anyways, both of these paths are tremendously difficult, and I give you guys good luck on whatever you choose.

   by Blade Hunter - 2007-10-17
 » Why not?

POPS only gives you emulation of a PS1 game.

The hombrew emulators out there give you so much more. How good would adhoc mode be? If it is written by the people for the people then the potential is that much greater.

I think PS1 emulation has been overlooked because POPS "does" it but it only does a small part of what "could" be done.

   by gool91 - 2007-10-18
» Do it!!! (not too good english)

Ofcourse you should continue making one! The sony emulator lacks of many tings. It has no setting so that you use the analogue stick properly.(For the moment sony maps the digital buttons(arrows) to the analogue stick).
Many games don't even play all sounds. For example: Dino Crisis 1-2, Discworld 1-2, and the list goes on...
On those cd's there are two or more sessions burnt on them. One with the game and another with sound, speech or music (whatever is missing).
A very useful thing would be savestates/slots. Those would be great if you have to turn the psp off to save battery or go back to xmb and transfer files to your psp so you can catch the bus in time. I usually do the mistake of playing a game, being far away from a savepoint and a have to transfer some files to my psp and so there is no time left for the bus. Or you could implement a option for pausing all emulation and enable usb. This would be very helpful. (nobody tell me to buy a usbmemory becouse i always fill them, i have three with 512mb).
One of the most aprichiated things would be multiplayer-support. I would want to play armored core with my friends and destroytheir AC's. The man who did this I think it was Ahman with company, but I'm not sure. If you search in google or QJ.net you'll find it.
my text will continue shortly...(next stop toilet)

   Re: gool91 - 2007-10-18
 » Back from the can.

I have a suggestion. If you use reverse engeneering( like "iamback" said) on sonys emulator and use it and implement things in it, and make a few changes maybe. That would make it very easy to use.
Or you could look at how sony made their emu and implement the good things into your emu. *I take no responsibility for anything illegal in this. Tell me before you call the cops and I can change it. If it's not deleted*

I guess the wanted features are:

- Savestates/slots

- FPS : speed-up and speed-down

- Multiplayer support.
Up to 4 players would be like a dream.

- remaping of buttons and using the psp analouge stick as psx analougue stick with a button combination for switching(like L+Down)

- That missing sound -fix thingie.

- Gameshark

- usb output enabled. filetransfer.

Well thats it for me...for now.
