Ó

Still remember Ben Heckendorn's "solder a PS2 analog to the PSP" project? Unwieldy as it was, dangerous as it could be (because you had to open up your PSP to wire the PS2 stick to the handheld), it was nevertheless a most welcome proof-of-concept that demonstrated that a PS2 stick CAN communicate with a PSP.

You know what happens to proof-of-concepts, right? They're the stuff of dreams! In this case, the dreams of Joe Stranger, who's been inspired by Ben Heckendorn's mod, took the idea one or two steps further, and modded a detachable PS2 stick that sits securely against the PSP! He's emailed us about it, sent us the YouTube vid, and from what we've seen, it works!

What Joe did was to add a USB junction to Ben Heck's schematics. The PS2 stick (and its USB plug) sits in a frame mounting that would also plug into a USB port that had been hacked into the left side of the PSP case. Okay, so the mod is still dangerous, since you have to open up your PSP to add and wire in the USB port. It's now immensely playable, however, and you can now think of the PS2 stick as a detachable "accessory!"

Joe even foresees that the setup could be used to create different add-ons for the PSP. One suggestion he had - since he's a fan of racing games - is a steering wheel. Let your imaginations run wild! He thanks Ben for thinking up the idea in the first place. We say Joe and Ben Heckendorn deserve their props for this one-two kick-a** control mod. Thanks for telling us about it, Joe!

 » best mod ive seen

this has to be one of the most usefull and best mods ive seen for the psp so far. its really cool and functional.

all i have to say is:

"I WANT ONE, I WANT ONE, I WANT ONE, I WANT ONE, I WANT ONE...!"

I'd have a shot at doing it only the last time i tried soldering my psp turned out a disaster (the modchip)!

 » That is awesome!!!!

ok think of this we could take that and put it on the other side and use it like there is 2 analoag sticks it could be done all you would have to do is rewrite some code just like he did for that jositiq that sweet

   Re: joesnose (Unregistered) - 2006-10-16
 » no code was written

Its a hardware hack, its just connected to the psp's analogue controller.

   Re: JOshISPoser - 2006-10-16
» that actually would be cool

I mean, imagine like SWBF: II on it. It would be so much easier than the other ways. and like some other games it would be easier. idk, this is just amazing

   Re: the3rd (Unregistered) - 2006-10-17
 » dual sticks

Since it is just basically taping into the psp built in joystick it isnt like creating another it's just allowing you to control the joystick another way, only way to do dual joysticks would be to have a port on the right side that when pushed donw it would tell the psp that the X button was pushed, when put up it would tell the psp that the Triangle button is pushed etc.

Re: mr toasty (Unregistered) - 2006-10-17
 » or..

instead of making the second stick register the
X O / [] buttons you could just use the D-Pad, so homebrew writers could make the D-Pad work like the right analog stick and the nub like the left.

   Re: the3rd (Unregistered) - 2006-10-17
 » second joystick

then that would be for homebrew and software made specifically for it, use a joystick that registers as X,O, etc then that can be used in games like coded arms, etc without having to rewrite any code etc. Be just like if the psp had 2 joysticks
   by shbnggrth - 2006-10-16
 » Wha?!?!

Nice, freaking sweet! All this software, homebrew hacking has gotten enought space here! Now this a freaking hack! How about writing a document on how you did it, with pictures of course? I would love to read it!

Much Props, Dude!

What else can we do?

   by FLai - 2006-10-16
 » .

Why do we have to go to these extents to get a good analog stick?
Why didn't they actually design the PSP well and have an analog stick that we don't have to warp our hands in a strange and ultimately painful position just to reach at?
Why do we have to do these mods just to be able to play comfortably?
This is a strange age where we have to solder and mod just to stop ourselves from hurting our hands after playing for 20 minutes.

 » tutorial request

I agree, we NEED a tutorial on how to do this. anyone know where there is a tutorial to change where the USB port is located?

   Re: joesnose (Unregistered) - 2006-10-16
» this is not using the psp's usb

another port has been added, its a usb style connector simply because its small enough to get inside the psp and it takes the 4 wires needed for this hack.

that tut is for UP, all you need is a male USB mini B port and wire it to the existing one

   Re: joesnose (Unregistered) - 2006-10-16
» that tutorial has nothing to do with this mod!

nada!

» Two Analog and tutorial please

Hi
I hope you can make two analog both left and right?
So its easy to play ghost in the shell and coded arms.
coz it's hard to play on the right buttom for up and down left and right.

nice hack, hope to see a tutorial real soon...:)

   by .A.J. - 2006-10-16

Great job on that. It appears to be sturdy. A tutorial would be fun to read, although I doubt I would ever perform it.

 » OOH!

i'm not interested that much by the ps2 controller but what caught my attetion is the side usb port on the psp :) .

   Re: joesnose (Unregistered) - 2006-10-16
» its not a usb port

its just used as a plug its not usb, its a usb plug and socket used to attach the ps1 analogue controller to the psp's analogue controller!

   Re: Joel (Unregistered) - 2006-10-17
 » yeah?

that's not a very good explanation dude, a plug like when you plug your usb cable to your psp so that you access the memory stick? details! be indepth.

   Re: Edlad (Unregistered) - 2006-10-17
 » usb port

He means it's not connected up like a normal usb port, it's just being used as an adaptor to connect the ps2 analog stick to the psp one.

Fantastic mod by the way Joe, I'd definitely love to see a tutorial. Fair play.

   Re: Joel (Unregistered) - 2006-10-17
 » ooh!

i get it now, but can you connect your usb cable on that port? or is it ONLY for the ps1/2 controller's analog?

   Re: joesnose (Unregistered) - 2006-10-17
 » just the controller

its not usb its just a connector for the stick

yo that is freaking amazing!!!

   by NJisMYhome (Unregistered) - 2006-10-16
 » xcxc

they should put the usb port where the charger port is that way you can have dual analog sticks......and u can use it for ps1 emulation, and other *****, because i hate using the "R1 lock on" bull*****

 » Hey...

Does anyone remember Robotron? Two joysticks and a pocketful of quarters?

Come one silly girls that is your project! Make Sony not only pay attention, but wish they had thought of it!

If I worked for Sony, I would be contacting this guy for his ideas. Keep it up dude!

Wow that came out looking realy nice and I could see using it myself if I was willing to dremel and solder on my psp.
And im glad to finnaly read through the comments without people criticising the work or the person.

 » FINALLY!

People are starting to understand how awesome that is. I don't see any stupid comments, makes me happy.

That is a nice mod, I would want to install something like that. I think that'll be a good project. What are the chances of success with no solder skills? x.x

   by GameLordOmega - 2006-10-16
 » Holy crap

This is freaking awesome. Using that and a USB PS2 plugin, and the DDR pad, one could successfully play PSPRevolution at like Wal-Mart or something. Imagine doing that to show off your "leet skillz0rz".... heheheh...

   Re: UnKnOwN_sOuL (Unregistered) - 2006-10-16
 » no...

you can't do that, it's wired to the analog control. you have to use something like PSP2TV
   by PARRANOYA (Unregistered) - 2006-10-16
» This is the top cheese here

Great job. I think I will try this. Dual analog joysticks would be nice...show me how Obe Wan!

   by MagicZipper (Unregistered) - 2006-10-17
» You should show this to Sony!

This is DEFINATLY something Sony should add to all future models of their PSPs. They could make money on selling the detachable Analog stick!

   Re: Sembazuru (Unregistered) - 2006-10-18
 » Change of connector

As long as a "production" version uses a different type of connector. Joe used a USB type connector (I'm sure) out of convenience and size. But as one can see from many of these coments it is too confusing to many people to have a USB connector that isn't a USB connection.

But, doubtful that Sony would pay attention to any advancement from the homebrew (hardware or software) crowd. :`(
