PSM ScanJak_The_Man, An active member from US PlayStation forums, has posted a short article after reading the latest PlayStation Magazine. The information contained is very interesting...

  • PS3 will have online service that goes beyond Xbox live
  • PS3 will be a DVR (Digital Video Recorder)
  • It will be able to connect with the PSP
  • There are a lot of games being worked on for it right now in the US (a lot more then what people know about)
  • The final PS3 dev kit is a lot faster than they thought (according to the developer)
  • The PS3 will have an iTunes type service to let you download Hi-Def movies, music, etc
  • The PS3 will take the media center functionality the 360 has even further
  • PS3 will serve as a location free player for the PSP, means you can watch the DVD?s that you have in your PS3 on your PSP (from anywhere in the world), or any other video files you have on your ps3, though this is still only being planned.
  • PS3 will be able to send its files straight to the PSP from anywhere in the world, and it can also control its DVR functionalities
  • Firmware updates will add more functionality, much like with the PSP
  • The Blu-ray Player functionality doesn't cost as much as a stand alone player because the Cell and RSX can take care of a lot of the stuff the PS3 will need to do to be able to read the disks
  • Fall release date for PS3, no release date for online service, but expected to launch with the system

All these new features makes a PSP worth buying? together with a PS3. ;-)

As you can see, there are quite some strange icons we?ve never seen before in the photo of the PSP, a glimpse of the next firmware? This scan, as noted in the bottom left hand corner, discusses the CES (Consumer Electronics Show), held the beginning of last month. Sony definitely plans to keep updating their precious PSP and will surely use it to their advantage with the release of the PlayStation 3, interacting with it any way they seem fit. We are definitely interested to see what the future holds for the powerful handheld, and only hope that Sony will not quash any ability to play homebrew on a product we payed a good amount of money to do with as we please.

I don't really see the point in each side (i.e. the xbox 360 fans against the ps3) dissing each others consoles yet! Until the ps3 comes out what's the point?!

I own a 360 and im very happy with it :)

Despite alot of ppl here saying the games are rubbish, I disagree. Its got one of the best, if not 'the' best console game line ups ever! I already own four 360 games as I can't get enough of the things!

Im also quite impressed with xbox live. It is now reasonably established and will keep on growing. Microsoft are already planning updates for it. The ps3's is unlikely to be better though as they'll be newbies to online services!

I'll still probably end up gettin a ps3 coz i loved my ps2 till the 360 came out! I thought id give some of my opinions on the topics anyway!

OMG alot of you are plain fools. Xboxlive in comparison to what was current in online gaming, is sub-par at best. The new xbox live isnt that much better.

Every damn console game I have ever played seems half-ass, except few rare titles like RE4.

Halo had a half-assed nultiplayer, no downloadable maps even though xbox live was very well implemeted during its development. Look at the PC version, thats how halo is suppose to be with its current patches.

Xbox360 is nothing close to next-gen, graphics can still be compared to the best xbox games today. There isnt any game currently on the xbox360 that pushes it so far away from the original xbox that it can be called a breakthrough in graphics. In order to be next gen, it has to literally destroy its previous by bounds in every category.

PC games have gone through generations just about every single year. half-life 2 brought some of the most realistic physics, the best graphics for an open-environment, and a good storyline.

Then theres games like FEAR, great graphics, great story, incredible gameplay. What does the xbox360 have that deserves the name NextGen? NONE. There isnt one game thats totally next gen on the xbox360. In fact it seems that the Xbox360 is a inferior port of the PC because thats what most of its games are.

So what if they delay the PS3, this just shows they want to make the best system they possibly can. Unlike the Xbox360, its a rushed console. In order to push its release i know MS had topush development. take the Xbox Compatability for example. They promised us the Xbox360 would be compatable, what they didnt say is that only a limited number of games will be compatable.

You all say sony is full of ****, everyone knows how full of **** microsoft is. I dont even play my 360 anymore, its useless to me. If I wanna play real games I play on my PC.

well vietone, i guess the real dumbass here is you for spending 400 dollars on a system you dont play

   by Soopergooman (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

First post on this one. WHOOOOO HOOOO i can't wait to get a ps3 now, screw XSUX. Sony always comes through with the better system. Man are peeps gonna freajk out today when reading this. Glad I have two psp's. Homebrew and updates here I come!!!!!!!!!

   by Vietone (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

Well if even half of that stuff is in the PS3 it will be plenty worth buying.

Location free, wow thats alot and prob gonna be one of the reasons ill update my firmware. A DVR, are you kidding, you cant be serious, I paid 300 bucks for my Tivo years ago and now I find that I dont need it anymore. Well a Blue-Ray player and a DVr is well worth 500 all together not to mention Location-free.

Well xboxlive isnt that hard to replicate much less improve on. Building a system that replicates the way PCs online game would be a much better service then Xbox Live anyday.

Im sure there is alot more PS3 to PSP functions that arent listed. Im anticipating the interaction of games.

Don't read too much into this crap. They spelled Blu-Ray wrong in the title. Most of this will be the typical pre-release bull**** Sony done with it's older consoles. Remember, PS2 was suposed to render Toy Story in real time and be 50x more powerfule than Dreamcast.

Firmware updates, I swear, one ****ing "security update" and it's revolution for me.

by Jonas Lindgren (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

Yeah, this sounds like a lot of speculation. Still, I think the PS3 will be a great console and I'm sure I will buy one as soon as they get to Europe.

by Illegal Machine (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

well... I can't believe that I'm actually considering upgrading for these features.

or perhaps buying a 2nd PSP... that's some cool mother****in ass **** there. I mean I'll buy one, and MAYBE there's some kind of exploit in the new firmware that will make it just that much better..

keep those fingers crossed

   by Vager (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

It still plays games right?

lol

   by comedy (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

i wanted to buy a ps3 cos of the games and if i have one i'm super-cool... any more functionality is just a bonus. i would dearly love it to be a dvr but doesn't that mean it needs a hard disk? and, they said that you could get expansion hard disk for it which are 2.5" (laptop stylee)... and those don't come so big. but it would be well good if you could encode the video on the thing so that you could fit hundreds of hours of stuff on it... so you can play dvds in ps3 over your home network? or do you even need a network? i just wonder how long a psp would last constantly streaming video via wlan.... it uses a lot of battery.
firmware updates... hmm...

did anyone here play copied ps1 games? i know i did, backups you see. but how many played copied ps2 games? i never used my ps2 for anything illegal whatsoever... the games and dvd player were enough. so i reckon that ps3 won't need homebrew or cracking or mod chipping or whatever. who would mod chip it? and risk breaking their ps3... bad idea.

yeah, pinch of salt for some stuff, but exciting times!

   by someguy (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

lol they are taking an advantage like xbox did to the ps2 and this system is going to pwn all. XBOX is the most stupido system ever!!!

   by Maxcre8 (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

Darn... if this is true! Amazing..
... ... :D :D :D

have in your PS3 on your PSP
you mean...

I think this is all bullsh*t to get people to wait for PS3

   by comedy (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

i don't see how ps3 can lose... it will be backward compatible, it will play blu ray out of box... it's wireless. it can have seven controllers or some weird number. lets face it, the games on ps2 walked all over the xbox games, i wondered about buying xbox once, but then realised it only has a couple of good games.

xbox 360. anyone see gamespot's 'best games of 2005'? well, it shows the best games on xbox 360... and they're rubbish.

hd-dvd... it does have the name, it isn't one quarter the size it goes like this: single layer 15gig, dual layer 30gig. blu-ray single layer 25gig, dual layer 50gig. sony have made great systems and published some truly excellent games, there's absolutely no reason to doubt that their commitment to making ps3 totally amazing is anything less than 100%. i am going to get a job to pay for ps3, but it's going to be worth it.

the playstation network (the name for playstation live) may be ok, i am still a sceptic, but then again i don't think much of xbox live either.
i think psp connectivity could be really cool... if it actually does something.

how many people out there would jump at the prospect of a ff7 remake... i know i'd buy it regardless. i reckon it would sell ps3 without a doubt.

I want a game machine... I have a DVR, I have a multimedia server, I don't want to pay for all that plus online stuff I don't need/want. I already have iTunes. Looks like I am passing on the PS3, unless they have a version without all that stuff for less than the $800 this is sure to cost.

   by derek (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

i heardthat the PSP is going to be some sort of controller for the PS3 on I4U Technology News

   by Tsukai (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

^ or maybe you can see it as bonus? well your loss ;/

   by soadnation (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

none of those are very specific.

- a service better then xbox live

how specific. doesnt say how its going to or anything. sony is just trying to make some propoganda for the system. they dont care if its true or not.

if 'having better online than Xbox Live' means 'ripping off consumers by releasing half-done versions of games and using their money to finance the other 50% through expansion packs' then I'm just going to stick with Xbox Live

   by Sousanator (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

all i want to know is price,,
with all these fancy features its going to be one hell of a expensive system

   by DJShrimpy (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

H E L L Z Y E A H ! ! !

And I was thinking about getting a Revolution, pfft.......

   by RaiderX (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

All this extra stuff is gonna justify the inevitable high price of the PS3. By the looks of it, the PS3 seems worth a firmware update on ur PSP!

   by Robert (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

ack!

New Icons=New Firmware
New Firmware=No Homebrew
No Homebrew= :(

   by Lexiticus (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

"if 'having better online than Xbox Live' means 'ripping off consumers by releasing half-done versions of games and using their money to finance the other 50% through expansion packs' then I'm just going to stick with Xbox Live"

You do realize that Xbox Live is EXACTLY set up to do that, Their microtransaction system is just a way to disguise releasing incomplete games, and making you pay to 100% them.

Everyone buy a 360 instead, which you can connect to with your psp, then when the sales are slumping for PS3, they'll allow homebrew. ;-)

   by soadnation (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

what are you talking about? the demo are free and the xbox live arcade ae full games. they are mainly for games that you wouldnt want to by on a disc(like joust) or for indepoendent developers to sell their games without having to invest the money on a dvd printing proces

   by PimpInDaHouse (Unregistered) - 2006-02-04

look here guys http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18222 then see what you think of the PS3.
