Well, another bit of hot news from E3. Someone videotaped the PS3's interface in action. And it looks just like the PSP's XMB/Interface. Keep your ears open, a lot of important information is exchanged.

  • There is the User Personalization thing, with your photo shown along with your username.
  • If you'll see properly, you'll also notice the Keyboard/Mouse settings
  • Apart from the normal Music, Movie, Game, Web Browser icons, there's also the Friends icon which means that there will be some integration into the User Interface itself.
  • And, there's that infamous Network Update icon. Does that mean that it will be able to support new things in the future like the PSP's firmware updates? Only time will tell.
And just for the record, I don't see any Location Free reference in there. So that bit of functionality, which had been speculated in the past, is most probably not present at this stage.

 » Firmware Update

So there is also a network update for the PS3. Do you think this will prevent modchips and other hacks like it does for the PSP ?

We don't have an idea ;)
Why not wait for it to come out before speculating about modchips? :)

It seems like the embedding isn't working in IE.
I'm working on it ;)

 » Great Stuff!

I liked the part about being able to hook up your own keyboard and mouse to it to surf the net because that seems a lot more realistic to do than these idiots that think a mouse and keyboard attached to the tiny PSP is practical.

Although the lady who was demonstrating it didn't seem to actually know many technical aspects of it...

god thing of something original the psp one was good but they should come up with something original if there gonna charge that much for it. Just goes to show how lazy they are

What about linux? They didn't even mention it!

To be honest, I'm not a very big fan of the XMB interface. It wasn't too bad on the PSP, it allowed quick access to all your files etc and was very simple. With PS3 I was hoping for something a bit less boring, something similar to the Xbox 360 interface, which I really like. Ah well, it's all about the games I guess, the interface doesn't matter too much I suppose.

 » cmon..

Only reason why i would buy the ps3, is if it had linux capabilities, or some way to play some of my favorite pc games. I would rather buy a 600$ ps3 than a 2000$ pc to play games with top notch graphics

 » Pretty nice.

XMB... I think they're just lazy to make a new idea or they don't want to take someone else's idea for the first time.

And system firmware! Putting homebrew on your PS3 through the new Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Stories!

 » XMB

They said long ago that tjhe XMB will be the standard Sony interface for the PS3 and the Sony TVs.

the XMB works great, the PSP functions are so easy to access so why change it?

The New Sonys TVs that have integrated Cell processors will have an XMB interface. It works. Its user friendly and it speaks for itself.

 » KICKS ASS!!!

I love this interface...short, simple... and I am sure they will still add some features that aren't ready for showing....

Looking at the specs though, it says it has IEEE 802.11 b/g --- so will this be a wireless router as well? Not just bluetooth wireless capabilities?

 » Good work

Daaaaamn. I'm gonna get one 4 real. I think the Internet Browser will be much better than the psp's one, because it has a hard drive. The keyboard and mouse settings look really good. It will be worth the 599€/$
