PSP 2 001PSP 2 002

Is this the reason why Target pulled the plug on UMD movies? Is this why there hasn't been any price drop for the PSP? si1enc3ed from the QJ forums has posted magazine scans from PlayStation Magazine (not the official one though) with details of how Sony's plans on making "PSP 2." The scans are rather poor and it was hard to decipher what's written, so to spare you the trouble (and save your eyesight), here's the introduction to the whole of the article. Thanks to milkman for the tip!

Rather than follow the traditional five-to-six-year product cycle of videogame consoles, Sony is expected to introduce an upgraded version of the PlayStation Portable in Japan before the end of March 2007. It will not be the "PSP 2" however, as Sony is instead eyeing a page(?) from Apple's iPod strategy and upgrading the existing PSP's specifications while keeping the retail price the same. It is also expected that, as Apple does with its generational iPod rollouts(?) the current PSP configuration will be discontinued when the new model goes on sale.

Sales of the handheld continues to be strong more than a year and a half after it was released in the U.S. It is believed that a combination of strong sales and plans for an enhanced version of the system is what has prevented Sony from dropping the price of the current PSP hardware itself. Instead, it introduced the PSP core pack earlier this year which offered a lower-priced alternative at the expense of previously bundled accessories.

The article in the scans goes into more detail of what changes are going to happen (The features they listed so far were built in 8GB flash memory, new configuration of the UMD slot -where The games will be inserted directly into the system- and a camera. The PSP 2 will be much smaller then the original. There has been no word about there being a second analog stick.) and what won't.

How come I feel like I've opened Pandora's box after writing this article?

To the author of this article:

You even quoted inside the article that "iIt will not be the "PSP 2" however". yet in your comment, you keep on refering to it as the PSP 2.... wtf.

 » Either way

This will be cool. If it's a whole new system then that's awesome, if it's a DS Lite-esque redesign I can use my old one for homebrew and the new one for everything else.

--->That didn't come from me. That was in the article. Here's what I said "The scans are rather poor and it was hard to decipher what's written, so to spare you the trouble (and save your eyesight)"

however". yet in your comment, you keep on refering to it as the PSP 2.... wtf.

---->Because as of the moment, there is really nothing to call it yet. The best I compromise I can come up with is to put in quotations marks. But thanks for pointing that out. ^^

» Not much wrong with the old one. Ok, maybe

Improve the analog stick and add a second, make the L and R buttons "feel" better, make the bottom buttons stick up slightly more, improve those sh*tty factory speakers, improve the square button if possible, and give up the homebrew battle and focus on improving the firmware features to ones that are actually useful.

 » PSP exchange

if there is going to be a PSP2 then we should be able to do what apple does when ever there's a new generation of iPod. We should be able to ship back to sony and recieve a new fresh PSP2 for a low charge and shipping and handling.

» to all that are complaining

Nintendo has been doing this since the first gameboy, they released the first one without color, then later in color, the mini, and others. Now they've done it with tha ds and ds lite

dah well. i dont think anything major will change...aprt from the camera and the inbuilt memory . maybe it will be smaller but they cant add a second analog stick because the first psp doesnt have one , same for the L and R buttons. it would be ridiculous for them to have a psp 2 becauuse they make thier money on games and the installed user base for the psp is already there for them to start making that. consoles have a life span of at least 5 years ( unless u r microsoft and arent making any money of of it ).

id have to wait and see if it can be hacked before i upgrade because although i play the odd game i mostly use it for reading books and comics and surfing the web.
itd be great iof it was hacked , then we could have the homebrew and itd be a lot lighter and thinner, right now its kinda bulky for a pocket.

 » it not PSP2

it will be just a revision of PSP (the same hardware, but more flash and some security innovations). Sony used the same strategy with PS2 (it also had a few revisions in the past).

Sorry about this...

#22 are you a tard? cartridges would be better. 1gb memory sticks are cheap now and they probably cost a lot less to manufacture, would make the PSP a lot easier to carry. 1.7gb really isn't needed, games just fill it with FMV.

 » New UMD slot

I don't know about everybody else, but the change to the UMD slot will be a great improvement. Wonder if they'll find a way to keep the UMD tops from popping out too :P..lol. Now if only they'd drop the prices on their freakin 4G memory stick pro duos to ,say, $80 then they'd have me sold ;-)

» Have long has the PSP (1) been out?

Like 2-3 years? So this mean the PSP2 will come out when the PSP is 4years old, maybe less. and I thought gaming console had a market life atleast 5years...

 » MORONS!

ITS A RE-DESIGN YOU IDIOTS NOT A PSP-2. GOD, PPL ARE DUMB! ITS GONNA PLAY THE SAME GAMES!!!!

ITS JUST GONNA HAVE BUILT IN MEMORY AND A FEW EXTRAS.

Sorry for the caps but people are seriously dumb.

Read the article, gonna have the same power, still uses UMDs.

 » umm...

I am so tempted not to spoil my own 15 minutes of fame but... I really don't think I tiped QJ in any way, shape or form about this article.

Atleast...i don't think i did...

Oh, and everytime I do give them a news tip I don't get a pinch of recognition. So i get recognition for an article that I didn't have anything to do with...

What's the deal?

   by yoshinatsu - 2006-08-17
 » Oh no...

Man, that's both good, but simultaneously, EXTREMELY awful... The original PSP will mean nothing for Sony anymore...
And maybe they come out with "PSP v2-only" games...
Maybe 4GB UMDs and other stuff like that...
Oh man... AWFULNESS prevails in this situation...
