PSP update iconAfter months of speculation and hundreds of articles speculating about the big 3.0 firmware update, it seems that the Sony JP site has finally released about it. This update is related to the 1.1 firmware update for the PS3, which was covered by us just a little while ago. Here's our trusty old friend Altavista translating it:

"In addition, since selling in late November version it raises also PSP "PlayStation portable" Advanced Capability addition and strengthening of security are done via the version rise of continuous system software, in 3.00 and starts raising the cooperation function of PS3. As for everyone of the PSP user with the update to of version 3.00, for  PSP which is transmitted inside PLAYSTATION Store "of PLAYSTATION Network"besides the fact that it reaches the point where utilization it can receive the game software, the remote play function of PS3*to enjoy 3 also it becomes possible to receive, (in PS3 of the HDD loading of 20GB from the fact that it is not wireless LAN function, it is not possible to utilize remote play,* 4)."

Yes, it's a bad translation, but you can still see all the juicy bits there. It seems that the PSP's 3.0 firmware upgrade will come a few days after the release of the PS3. You will probably be able to get it from the PlayStation Store. The 3.0 update looks like it will be big on PS3-PSP interconnectivity. Also there seem to be some kind of "security updates" in there. Are we people missing something?

But think about it for a second. We seem to be missing something else too. Go on, we'll give you a moment to think... Where's the PS1 emulation?! Frankly, we don't know. Did Sony forgot to mention about it? Possibly. Has Sony forfeited that function? We don't wanna bet on that either. From the looks of it, we'll have to wait until the release date for more info. Stay tuned, we're gonna be covering every bit of it.

I'm going to guess here that PS1 emulation is not in fact going to be built into the hardware, but is going to be a separate application. That'd make a lot of sense - the PS1 games never need a lot of memory, so the PSP has plenty of room to spare to just load in the application from software. And the application could be small enough for a memory stick at that. This would leave precious room on the Flash for the media features.

But we'll see.

this might be an misunderstanding but PS1 Games are freakin huge like 700 megs each and lets not forget ff7 which is like 3 discs so that rite there 2.1 gigs

Yes you will need like a 4gig memory stick OR store on the ps3.

   Re: GaveUpTomorrow - 2006-11-10
 » Chances are...

They are going to compress the games a great deal. Therefore, you would probably be fine with a one gig card and be able to hold a couple of games on it. They've released nothing about it at all though, so who know what their going to do...

Actually i heard they formatted the games to be muich much much smaller . Some games that used to be 400 megs on the ps1 are now even 40 mb or less

Why the f*ck do you keep hyping and hyping, about a stupid firmware update?!

You guyz haven´t hyped any homebrew application as much as you´ve hyped this, rediculess firmware update!

None of of us are going to update anyway...

   Re: Uzumaki-kun (Unregistered) - 2006-11-10
 » good point, no update

true nobody is going to update lol we'll just sit back and wait on dark alex or booster or cool people like that to get this thing on dev hook. p.s. whats the big deal about 2.71SE its pretty useless desho ne?
the joy of dev hook is that you switch from 1.5 to 2.71, isn't switching from a custom firmware 2.71 to 1.5 a bit silly? maybe its what you TA80.. people have to do. i don't get it.

   Re: shinbu (Unregistered) - 2006-11-10
 » maybe...

its coz there is no decent homebrew to hype about. everytime something gets near completion its dropped, or it runs into legal problems with sony and stops, or they just cant compete with official sony things (ps1 emulation, unofficial at 10fps, official at full speed, you choose)

   Re: jrfhoutx (Unregistered) - 2006-11-10
 » Uzumaki-kun

the point of 2.71SE is that you don't need devhook, and you don't switch between the two firmwares, they're combined into one firmware. you get the best of both worlds 1.5 and 2.71, including 'backup' loading straight from the game folder. I loved my 1.5 with devhook but 2.71SE makes 1.5 w/devhook a little obsolete, you get all the homebrew functions of 1.5 (99% of 1.5 homebrew works on SE) plus all the sony 'improvements' in 2.71 (like RSS, H.264, etc. without having to emulate a damn thing) if you don't get it and don't see the advantages (you also get custom firmwares recovery mode) it's cause you don't understand what it is, try actually reading the release statements.

The only true reason for upgrading to 3.0 would be to play a brand new game or to use the new PS1 emulator. If the latter isn't in the firmware update, no one will really care about it. I mean, face it, if I wanted connectivity between a handheld and my console, I'd own a Gamecube and a Gameboy Advance (Note to Sony fanboys who love PS3-PSP: Didn't you guys call the GCN-GBA connectifity "a gimmick"?). Give me e-distribution and a PS1 emulator in the palm of my hand (WITHOUT the need for a PS3) and then I may pledge to upgrade like a religious fanatic.

out of all the people i know, (with a PSP) ill be the only one not to upgrade. im smart ill wait about 6-8-or maybe 12 months for it to be cracked :D. because that is how long its going to take, unless sony made a big bobo in this firmware that was so obvious it was too good to be true... ahem but PS1! ahh!

retards sony has stated that ps1 is coming with about 10 games per month etc etc. *****ty games to start with. If they dont have it ready at 3.0 it will be soon after.
JUST BECAUSE they dont immediately mention it DOES NOT MEAN that they cancel it :P Screaming queens!

the playstation store is the psx emulators your retards, they already said the downloads woiuld be disponised trough playstation store, 3.0 firmware gives you the options to acess it and download into your mem stick

   by Bored (Unregistered) - 2006-11-10
 » PSOne emulation

It's pretty likely that the emulation code is embedded in the EBOOTs that they distribute, no need to load it on the firmware. Making the PSP ready for the Online store seems to be the only thing needed in the firmware, in that case.

f ps1 emulation. just buy the stupid game for a penny and play it on your ps3. i will never upgrade, why? i got it all with homebrew. old ass games, who cares.

   Re: GaveUpTomorrow - 2006-11-10

The only homebrew that is worth playing would be the emulators....meaning old games... IMO, older games PS1 and back are the only games I truly enjoy on consoles anymore..

 » you people are *****s

Because you wont update because you prefer on playing old ass games, that doesnt mean anybody is not looking for news about fw3.0.
I myself am hyped about this because of the ps1 emulator and stuff. I cant wait to play FF and GT again on my PSP. If you dont like news about fw3.0 because you are a cheap bastard and prefer downloading illegal ISOs, fine, thats your problem.
But dont complain about 3.0 because some of us are really looking foward to it.

Re: Mr. Common Sense (Unregistered) - 2006-11-10
 » not ready

The PS1 emulator is obviously not ready yet or not going to be released with firmware because sony would have made a big deal about it. I'm sure they'll find a way so it will only work with 3.0fw. I'm waiting until it's playable on 2.71se-b.

» Not an Emulator as we know it....?

I was just thinking about this for a while, and Something clicked on...

if we're going to be able to buy and download Playstation 1 games for use on PSP, you can bet your arse it isn't going to be in an easy to copy and distribute archive, i.e. Zip or .ISO, It's more than likely going to be some kind of new propriatary file, and more than likely, the PS1 games will be in eboot form, with the actually emulater componant part of the games themselves, as opposed to an emulator built into the firmware (afterall how are they going to squeeze the PS1 emulator into 2 megs of onboard flash out of the 32 that the psp has available...)

   Re: capagotks (Unregistered) - 2006-11-10

the latest updates are 20 or 21mb, not 30. so they have 12mb of room

   Re: GaveUpTomorrow - 2006-11-10

that 2.82 took between 26-28mb on the flash (or something close to that). The 20mb you are thinking of are probably before the updated flash files are extracted to be installed ;)

retards.. read about what the emulator is -> IT IS NOT an executable with distributed isos! It's an eboot PER GAME. There is no magical "emulator built into firmware" it's all in the eboots! So sony doesn't have to update ***** for that, all they need is a safe way to distribute them! REEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDD

   Re: WarLord - 2006-11-10
 » Good job

Thanks for clearing that up dude. On Sony's part, that makes alot more sense than for them to embed an emulator in the 3.0 fw.
   by jrfhoutx - 2006-11-10
 » ...

First of all Sony has NEVER said WHEN the PS1 emulation would be available or HOW it would work (actual emulator or signed eboot, etc.), so you should probably take your own advice and read, yes it will probably be encoded in the eboot, that makes the most sense since they will be signed eboots (official) that you are allowed to make a limited number of copies of (yes they said that could be an option in a previous press release). Second, the Playstation Store is not the PS1 emulation, it's a damn electronic distribution site. Third, If you go back and read previous articles they have said that initially you will most likely need a PS3 in order to download the PS1 games (I assume so that they can limit the number of copies that can be shared, kinda like they did with the check-in/out function for DRM protection with the first couple of SonicStage releases) and then transfer them to and from your PSP. Fourth, who cares if they will be copy-protected are you people really that cheap that you can't pay $5 to download one? If so, you people are the reason that, as you say, Sony has failed or Sony sucks or there are no good games. Of course they haven't made any superb ground-breaking games and why should they when you're all to cheap to buy them. I didn't hear anyone complain about paying $300 for a PS2 and $50 for a game when they came out, people lined up around the block to get one. Factor in technology and inflation (an economic concept you kiddies don't seem to get) and the PS3 and PSP are both comparable to the launch of the PS2. Suck it up and get some real jobs you dead-beats.
