PSP-3000 - Image 1

In a recent interview with Gamespot, John Koller talked much about the recently unveiled PSP-3000: the improved screen, microphone, bundled releases, and more. In that interview, he revealed that the battery life of the new PSP model will indeed be decreased by about 20 to 30 minutes.

Koller explains that this is because of "a larger power draw with the brighter screen." Aha, just as I expected. Well, "20 to 30 minutes" of a shorter battery life isn't that much of a drawback, methinks. And for those who think that it's the end of the world because of the decreased battery life, Koller confirms that there's still going to be other options out there:

That's going to be off-set because we're still going to have the extended life battery that's still available for the consumers, so they're still going to get the 8 to 10 hours out of that battery. Or the battery that comes with the PSP will now be right around three and a half to four hours.

As for other components, the PSP-3000 model will have the same compatibility with the Slim accessories - they want everything out in the market to work with the PSP-3000.

It's also been confirmed that the Slim will be phased out eventually. Koller says production of the PSP-2000 will cease by September. Already?! If you're a collector of sorts, better make sure you grab a Slim unit ASAP!

 » 1..2..3?

we had the fat , then the slim, so what's this one called?
the psp brighter-but-reduced-battery-life?

Re: Gino D. (QJ. NET Staff) - 2008-08-29
 » hmmm

I was wondering the same thing... PSP Slim and Brite, anyone? That's what most people online are starting to dub it as, anyways... ;-)

   Re: akeemb - 2008-08-29
 » i think...

... if they're gonna REPLACE it then they don't really need to have a new name (unless its the slim v2.0)

   Re: lusid - 2008-08-29
 » new name

How about PSP Lite-Brite?
+)

   Re: Metal Jody - 2008-08-30
» we had the fat, then the slim, so...

so this one is obviously called the slim-er.

   Re: DeathAngel666 - 2008-09-01

what about the psp anorexic? lol

Re: Gino D. (QJ. NET Staff) - 2008-09-01
 » Hehehe

No no no... Can't be a PSP Slimmer. The 2000 and 3000 will be having the same dimensions.

The PSP Slim + Brite will retain all features of the Slim and Lite, but have the new screen and microphone. Everything else stays, so in essence, it's still a Slim. (and then some)

LOL @ DeathAngel666 tho. Hahaha! PSP Anorexic FTW! ;-)

 » wtf!

Wtf sony!? if the battery life is any shorter than 30 mins then I am not gonna get another PSP if my slim breaks down on me.

   Re: GigaByte - 2008-08-29

It says it's been shortened BY 30 mins. Not that it's been shortened TO 30 mins.

this PSP is *****, "OMG OMG OMFG!!!!!! A BETTER SCREEN AND A BUILT IN MIC, AND OMFG A PS BUTTON, NO MORE HOME BUTTON!!! OMG OMG OMG!!!! AND ONLY THE COST OF ANOTHER $222/$300 DOLLARS AND LOWER BATTERY LIFE!!! YAY!!!!!!"

This PSP is sooo *****ing dumb, WHY get a PSP that is almost no different than the other models?! ooohhh a better lcd screen so i can watch movies in higher quality!!!! THATS WHAT A "DVD" PLAYER IS FOR!!!

ooohhh WOW a built in mic, so my friends can hear everything around me!!! My dog breathing, my cell phone ringing, porno pop ups on my PC, wow!!!

oh and a new PS button! thats GREAT!!! i suuurrreeee want a PS button insted of a home button:D Even though there is no difference in it whatsoever!

geeze if sony is gonna make a new PSP, there better be more power, ***** the 333 MHz, go for like atleast 400 MHz or even more than that. And maybe even more RAM

Why is it that the battery is shorter? a pointless LCD screen? how bright does it have 2 be??? i can see my PSP slim just fine:|

well, maybe, JUST maybe i will consider getting this PSP if its hackable, MAYBE!!!

He made good points, just sounded like an ass doing it.

But in all honesty, how bright does the screen have to be? I love not having to charge my PSP for a long while, and while 30 mins may not seem like a big difference, when you're out and about it will be.

   Re: omegaridley - 2008-08-30
 » sorry

sorry guys that i was an ass, and mr.x256, ***** u

Just, this PSP doesnt seem worth it cause its not too power efficent, like thelastguitarhero said, it will be different when ur out.

This PSP probably wont be hackable, until i know it will be, then i may get it, depends...

sorry again for being mean, and ***** u mr.x256

 » compatability

They said all the hardware compatible for 2000 will work for 3000, that might include pandora. I'd get one of these instead of a slim anyway if i were a collector, i still have my phat from 4 years ago.

   Re: acalora - 2008-08-29
 » Follow-Up

To save battery life, couldn't we just dim the screen?

   Re: Soupman - 2008-08-29
 » lol

if you dim the screen then whats the point of spending the money for a brighter one? :p
   by itzzspencer - 2008-08-29
 » slim and gay

the psp "slim and bright"? yeah right, that sounds way too good

   by Silver-Tiger - 2008-08-29
 » ....

It's pretty clear why they want to phase out the Slim.
The new PSP will be pandora-proof and they want to get rid of hackable PSPs as fast as possible.

   Re: roddollente - 2008-08-29
 » good insight

exactly what i wanted to say. of course they don't want hackable psp's roaming around the market. typical sony. lol.
   by kraft - 2008-08-29
 » lol

I thought one of the pros of having a lite/slim version was to reduce power consumption and save battery life

   by dazmo - 2008-08-30
 » hmm

"psp 3000 will be unhackable"
lets think about this logically.

the first PSP's WERE hackable BECAUSE sony understood that sometimes things can go wrong with the firmware. they dont want to have to trash every machine that comes back to them for warranty service jsut because some easily replaceable data became corrupted. that would be just goofy.

so the workaround that they were using (that being the magic stick and pandora battery) turned out to be the reason they were hackable.

so, they make a new version. what it boils down to is this, is sony going to make this machine unhackable? that would be bad for them. their pesonal revenues have increased as a result of the hacking, but the developers are irate.
if they make the machine unhackable, their revenues are sure to slow down, though the developers will be happier.
but the point is. .SONY loses money, and sony likes money.

so there are other ways to ensure that the machine is much harder to hack, such as doing away with the whol epandoras battery apporach and making modular chips that can just be swapped out.
but then sony loses even more money retraining service personel, plus the price of the chips (not much, but you can be sure that wuold add up)
if anyone has any insight in this subject itd be fun to roll it around.

   Re: DontCryIfYouDie - 2008-08-30
 » ...

I think they will just and a serial port or whatnot in the inside of the psp. but this port would require a modified cable which only sony has access to. that way they are able to reflash the psp to repair bricks that are sent in and block out the use of pandora

   Re: dazmo - 2008-08-30
 » hmm

that seems like a good way to do it, but will they?
that will mean training for their service personnel, not to mention the costs associated with manufacturing this cable. all to stop the machine from being hackable, which was hurting them little, if at all.

   Re: coolguy5678 - 2008-08-30
 » AFAIK...

Our Magic MS's aren't the same as Sony's. We still have to use an exploit to get the PSP to actually run the IPL on the MMS. Fix that exploit, and no more Pandora for us (unless we find another exploit), while Sony's technique that they've always used for unbricking PSP's will still work.

   Re: coolguy5678 - 2008-08-30
 » And about this:

"their pesonal revenues have increased as a result of the hacking, but the developers are irate."

This is a debate in itself, but I don't think it's likely. Sony makes a loss on each PSP they sell, and make it up on UMD game sales. And it's likely that the money they lose due to piracy is greater than the money they earn due to people buying a PSP because of homebrew, then buying games. But you need real stats to say that.

   Re: dazmo - 2008-08-30
 » ahh

best post on the topic ive read so far. looks like if youre right then theres no reason for sony to make the mistake of creating another hackable machine.
btw.
what does "afaik" mean?

   Re: DontCryIfYouDie - 2008-08-30
 » AFAIK

(is a shortened phrase - as far as i know) atleast i think it is?
   by Aphex85 - 2008-08-30
» ok, so this is i'm gonna do...

so from what i have heard, the parts for the psp 2000 and the 3000 are interchangerble (not sure how reliable that info is tho) but if that is the case, then why not just swap the screen from the 3000 to the 2000. that way you can have the new screen and still have a hacked psp. the mic can be added easily as proven on acidmods.

   Re: core2kid18 - 2008-08-30
 » maybe

but when Sony said that the parts are interchangeable, i think they meant the external accessories only. We'll just have to wait for it to come out and then see what it can do. If it's hackable I might think about getting one, only for the screen though, I hate my original PSP's screen in daylight.

 » Nice Play Sony ?

Not really! Well They made minor Improvements, but to sell this more Expensive than the Slim already will be a rip out!

SONY:Brite LCD, Built in MiC and PS Button n_n"! See Sony Understand your needs Gamers.

Gamers: Sony... ***** U! Why don't you think of this long time ago! I mean Nintendo DS has Built in mic Since first Fat DS! They made a Smaller DS with Mic too! Sony Made Smaller SLim with Same Buulll ***** of Fat! (except for the 1.50 K) Ohh Right is SONY, they r so dumb they didn't notice! or They are so Ambitious that they still want to RIP people money for adding just few features that Moders already had...

What about a Second Joystick!
a SSD (SOliD StaTE Disk) or Internal HDD

Yeah Sony, UMD has to go, at least for this New PSP!

We still have Old PSP and Fat that runs UMD..

Make Playstation Store more versatile to download PSP games at Average Security for your own needs(Piracy)

The positive side of this is that SONY will release a PSP-3500 or PSP-4000 to FIX some Errors of Hardware and compatibility....

I guess I'll buy one when thy be Custom and Lower the price...

No Sony doesn't take me as Moron Twice! lol

They did once but not Twice with the Slim!

I never bough one!

YES!

Thats why I'll buy this one if sony doesn't plan in making another one so fast...

Unbelievable SOny!

Thanks
