Not long after Sony unleashed its updated model of the PlayStation Portable, affectionately named PSP Slim & Lite, there's an interesting placeholder image found on Sony Computer Entertainment's website for instruction manuals that raises eyebrows. The image says "3000 series" on the PSP website, and it's inevitable for people to speculate that a new line of the handheld is at least in the works. The sleek and lighter PSP-2000 was launched back in September across the globe and the portable gaming device is expected to run for 10 years, so it doesn't seem unlikely for Sony to push for redesigned models before unveiling a successor. Though the image could have been prepared for future plans, we'll just watch out for any possible announcements. Keep checking back for updates! |

» Well! Well more for Sony!!!
I am not interested if this model will not have a built in HDD and an added built-in video cam also, a second analog would be great and the price $ 300 would it be $ 350 no way.

But unlike where you pulled those figures, Sony's R+D dep. isn't located in your rear.
Built in HDD and second analog would be sweet. It'd also be sweet if MS made a 5.6 Ghz dodeca cored Xbox with a physics card and 3D hologram display, but it too is economically infeasible.
Also, to those saying UMDs aren't enough? The DS has one gig-BIT. It seems to do fine. How many cut-scenes does Crisis core have? And how much space do those waste? That's right. A lot.
UMD is simply the best option for portable games; people like having a PHYSICAL game, not everyone has an internet connection to DL full games, and it's incredibly impractical to sell games on mem sticks.
All digital-based games would benefit you 5% of the market greatly, and make the PSP utterly inacessable to the remaining 95%. Priorities, priorities.

» @barakku: just a little clarification :)
i'm not saying that the UMD is not enough for the current PSPs. it's more than a hella enough actually. it's once in a blue moon that a developer is willing to invest in a current-PSP-standard game that would stress the capacity of the UMD, so we need not worry much about 1.66GiBs of capacity
my comment about the ditching of UMDs was referring to future PSP revisions for the next console generation. that, however, does not mean that future PSPs should not have UMD drives. a better way to put it is to have a drive that is compatible with both the current psp UMDs and a new disk standard (bluray minidiscs, for example, or whatever they may have then)
why did i say that? well:
basically, PSP was developed in a time when the 6600GT was king. a time when 1gb ram costs $150 bucks each and pentium 3 and 4 systems were beasts. chips using 130nm fabrication process was the most fearsome things ever and crippled dual core processors costs like an intel c2q6600 now.
when the slim was produced, the specs haven't changed much. by right, the slim should not be costing as much as it is right now. you can pretty much say that the slim is old technology fabricated using new processes.
however, the PSP2 would be in the age of the 26.5nm wafer fabrication by the time it's out. the amount of transistors in chips would have nearly sextupled (6x) for the same cost. we're talking about the age where 60 or more gigabits of graphics bandwidth are on mainstream computers (not to be confused with graphics memory, for those planning to flame me later). where 8800gtx looks like a joke for the price. by that time, the PSP2 would be pretty much crippled by the 1.66GiBs of memory as games would be using much larger textures, models with more polygons, landscapes with more details and so on. the latencies of the UMD would also become a concern for the next generation of games.
as regarding my comment about memory card "softcopy" games: within the next few years, 32gb mspds would pretty much be mainstream (it took 4gb just 5 months to become affordable, and 16gb just got released and 8gb prices are falling like weights). i agree with you that it's impractical to phase out all forms of physical hardcopy games, but it would be a good idea to provide a secondary method of "downloaded" purchasing at a lower price. the same concept as the direct2drive.

I have to admit that I had been voting grey frownies for all your comments in this article, perhaps from the influence of Techni's comment.
But after reading what you just said, I've actually come to agree with you.
My father manages manufacturing plants here in Europe, and he feels that you do have a point there. Most of your predictions about hardware changes are pretty close to the figures estimated by tech magazines, so I would assume that's where you pulled the figures.
However, seeing the trend of Sony's portable device developments, the PSP-3000 may not make as big a jump as you may expect for a next generation console if it were to come out within the next 2 years, solely because the Slims would still be the low-cost device to milk the market for some time. Coming up with a PSP with next generation specifications this year would be a disasterous move for Sony as it would kill of sales for the Slims, and Slim owners would not buy the product.
However if the PSP-3K were to be released much later as a portable system with next generation console specifications, you've pretty much hit the spot there.

» i had always...
i had always had the impression that the next psp on the shelves would be a next gen instead of a simple remake and resize actually.
they've already resized the psp once i doubt they're gonna do it again or they'll look like they're just blatantly coming up with new ways to milk the sh1t out of the market with 5 year old hardware hidden in new shells. people will just get pissed off
and if they actually release a new psp this year or somewhere next year i'd get pissed off too rofl
well actually i dont think anything we say would make much of a difference anyway. thanks alot for your much-needed edification +)

it may as well just be another future MOTHERBOARD REVISION.
remember sony consoles always do that without concerning the public (only modchip makers and hackers are alarmed).
if there is a sony product to drool about that maybe the Sony Ericsson - XPERIA%u2122 X1
http://www.adonismobile.com/2008/02/sony-ericsson-experia-x1-specs-video.html
almost double the cpu
double the memory
nearly 4x screen resolution of the psp
and its gonna keep bill gates wealthy too!

Price is no issue to me. I get tons of cash from www.swatcash.com/admin
and in addition to that, their "Swatcash" point system can also be redeemed for all kinds of great prizes. So, I'll probably be one of the first adopters of this next gen PSP if/when it ever comes out :)
Here's to hoping that the DS also gets a more power evolution; preferably with dual touchscreens, and a nice 3d gpu. Well... a more 3d gpu with antialiasing, at least :)

let's hope they ditch the UMD crap and shift to the more promising SSD (memory cards etc) media. maybe in the meantime introduce a second analog stick, secondary phone function, touchscreen, natively unlocked homebrew capable firmware and more attachments (like a foldable keyboard+stand attachment for use with text editing or organizer software) and PDA manufacturers would have to make a run for their money

I don't want the amount of games I can bring with me to be limited by how much I'm willing to pay for memory sticks. And I don't want developers to take a step backwards development wise and go back to being pressured by publishers to limit themselves to smaller file sizes so people with smaller cards can fit more games.
Ditching UMD is retarded

i hope you realized crisis core was cut 20% because the 1.8gigs of UMD was too small
i also hope you realized that dj max portable and portable 2 was cut because of the 1.8gigs umd limit

umds are limited in reading speed
easily damaged
expensive to produce
limited in capacity
a recent article also reveals official word from sony about the idea of scrapping the UMD. according to them, the benefits outweigh even piracy, so maybe it's time you learn to read and stfu ;)

» Cut 20%?
Uh, false. If it were cut 20% to fit on the disc, that would mean that it takes up the whole disc.
It doesn't. It's only 1.59 GB.

the original japanese release was 1.66GiB (gibibytes, not gigabytes.)
1.66GiB translates to 1699.84KiB and 1740636bytes. the umd holds 1.8GB (equivalent to 1800000bytes, which is essentially just 1.71GiB).
the same reason why a 160GB harddisk shows up as 149GiB in your comp, if you haven't realized it yet
the game was cut during finalization for the japanese locale, and the size was further optimized during localization for the US market

it's only 0.01GiB short from hitting the max capacity of the UMD.

US crisis core is 1.59GiB, not GB
GiB means gigabinarybyte btw, which divides in steps of 1024 instead of 1000
US crisis core being 1.59GiB translates to 1716843548bytes (which is 1.71GB SI Unit) just about 90MB short of the full umd capacity. (the "gigabyte" used in windows, btw, is actually gigabinarybyte)
and again, that's due to optimizations during localization for the US market.
if you were wondering how i pulled 20% out of my ass: slightly less than 2 chapters worth of content were cut, and multiplayer mode was scrapped. so there you go
ps there's a typo error in my earlier post rofl

@strongbadunit
the JP release of crisis core does pretty much occupy the entire disc.
the reason why the US release does not occupy the entire UMD is because it's been optimized during the localization for the US market. the Hard Mode does not add much to the size because it's essentially just applying a multiplier (or a formula) to enemy stats
since nothing much new was added to the game and that it was localized and optimized (compressions, fixes, tweaks here and there), you can expect it to be much smaller

one last explanation in simple english
the capacity of a UMD is 1.66GiB (equivalent to 1800000000bytes)
the size of japanese crisis core is 1.65GiB (equivalent to 1787723776bytes). it is just 0.01GiB from hitting the capacity of the UMD.
the 20% cut was done to japanese crisis core, NOT the US version. the US version was just a "port" of the japanese version, no new content was added (hard mode is just a multiplier/formula to the enemy stats so it doesn't take up space), and the game was optimized so the filesize can be expected to be smaller.
just so you know, wildarms being 1.64GiB from the "windows filesystem" is equivalent to 1760936591 bytes. that is just 0.02GiB from hitting the limit of the UMD.
read/google or don't even comment next time. it just makes you look stupid. yawn.

fail.
It appears as that much because the file allocation tables or other system junk has to use up the space due to formatting. After all, any data, even an index/fat/mft will take up space on a harddrive.

you might want to look at bytes
if im not mistaken, xp file check will return a result calculated in binaric MB's and GB's, even though it doesnt say GiB it still uses 1024bytes to a kilobyte not 1000
its because of the way binary works
in metric it's 1's then 10's then 100's then the metric kilo at 1000 in order of place value
however binary uses 1 then 2 then 4 then 8 then 16 then 32 then 64 then 128 then 256 then 512 then your binaric kilo 1024

i streamed a copy from my local game shop to see for myself:

Crisis Core US: 1,716,713,472 bytes (1.71GB or 1.59GiB)

i did not have a copy of wildarms, but from your post, you were implying that wildarms is much bigger than crisis core
i streamed a copy from my local game shop to see for myself:
in BYTES/octets
Wild Arms US: 1,629,333,504 bytes (1.62GB or 1.51GiB)
Crisis Core US: 1,716,713,472 bytes (1.71GB or 1.59GiB)
how is crisis core US larger than wild arms?
so much for you "knowing the difference between gib and gb".

forgive me but it's quite difficult to distinguish the intended audience of your post.
were you trying to say that freeplay is right from the start and me and ace didn't know what we were talking about or is it the other way round?
just to uh.. make sure yknow :p

you got me wrong. you, popson and ace said it right and i've got no doubt about it.
i'm just sayin that freeplay surely knew he made a mistake after reading your calculations, but like ace said, he's human after all.
heh i understand words online can sound a little foggy sometimes, no worries

"who the hell using the Bit GiB FS Management numbers"
to clear the confusion, the GB unit you see in windows is actually a GiB. windows filesystem on all versions are on GiB default and there is no way or reason to change it. microsoft adopted this to make things easier for programmers. also crisis core is larger than wild arms unless you downloaded a rip. the KB in windows is also KiB, so you cannot convert directly to GB from there.
basically all UOI in the windows shell is missing an "i" in between

it always been 1024 because its always been understood that PC's read binary, simple onoff gates within the processor
1000 is kilo to us because its neat
in binary 1000 is 1111101000 which is not too neat
10000000000 is 1024 and is neat so therefore became the binary kilo
gibibytes and other bi's come from a lawsuit filed against hard drive manufacturers when poeple noticed after paying for 20GB they only have 18.7GB of space
they were selling 20,000,000,000 bytes as 20GB
when windows saw it and broke it down to 1024 some consumers felt ripped off
also some hard drives are up to double their said capacity to increase the integrity of the hard drive
if you get a bad sector it simply reallocates that sector to the unseen part of the hard drive
theres a trick to open it for full use using norton ghost, if you google im sure you'll find it
but its not recommended
one bad sector and data is lost instead of reallocated

forgot to mention is the hard drive manufacturers that pushed for the renaming from megabytes to mebibytes

» Your still not getting MY argument
capacity of UMD:
1800000000bytes approx (1.8gigabytes - SI unit)
1757812.5 KiB
1716.6 MiB
1.67 GiB
Correct BUT US Crysis Core is:
1,716,713,472 bytes
1,676,478 KiB
1637.2 MiB
1.60GiB
Even if ur argument holds theres still like 7-8 megs left its not full
My Argument is the UMD is not full, some of you are saying its full >.<
Also Maybe i have a weird Copy of WA:XF but no matter how many time i rip it off the UMD i get 1.62GiB

Lol i thought it was a picture of a psp-3000, not just an image that says series 3000... And as flammingcowz has said, they could be talking about the ps2-3000 instead.

if you look at the URL of the image, it's put in the PSP logos folder
http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/psp/current/img/in_3000.gif
if you change in_3000 to in_2000, you will see the psp-2000 logo used to indicate psp-2000 here:

It's too early for a PSP2, so it might be another redesign with some more hardware enhancements, who knows. Personally I want them to just stick to the Slim model (psp-2000) and just keep working on making the best possible successor with major updates/changes to really make it worth it.

I don't seem to see this on their website...
Either way, 99% chance its an April fool's joke. Why the .*****. would they make that and put it onto the internet before they have announced anything, and even before their PSP-2000 series has finished its lifecycle? Sony isnt that dumb. Nobody is, hopefully.
