Sony PlayStation Portable handheld - Image 1This article was originally posted on June 22, 2008 at 5:28 a.m.

With the code for Sony's official PlayStation Portable Firmware 4.0 already decrypted, it's only a matter of time before the next custom firmware finds its way into the community. To prove this point, homebrew developer Mathieulh recently revealed some of the new features that will be added into the upcoming Custom Firmware 4.00 that Dark AleX and team M33 are already working on.

One of the new features include an in-XMB recovery mode, which will allow users to change their settings straight from the PSP's main menu screen. This is definitely beats rebooting your PSP and entering recovery mode the normal way.

The other feature is the inclusion of savestate support for UMD games. Users will now be able to save their progress at any given time during gameplay and be able to load their game at that point after restarting. It has not yet been confirmed if the savestate feature will be integrated directly into the firmware or will be released as a separate plugin.

That's all the info we have for now on Custom Firmware 4.00, but we'll be sure to post more updates as we get them.

*UPDATE*: Dark AleX' recent blog post has clued us all in to a tentative release date for Custom Firmware 4.00 M33, which if met under optimal conditions, will allow us to see the CFW hit the Internet download portals by the end of this week.

But the early arrival of the first 4.00 M33 comes at another condition: the development of the features promised - the in-XMB recovery and savestates - may not be fully implemented all at once.

Dark AleX says that updates would soon roll for the homebrew developer's CFW, and you're likely to see those everything working with M33-2 or later.

And since the Team M33 is now picking up on the firmware that Sony fell short of, the developers are willing to go the extra mile. Now they'll be addressing issues of shell compatibility and internally induced hiccups (homebrew app crashed by homebrew app), and a built-in prx and pbp utility to boot.

Hey Sony We Need A Fast Internet Browser That Can Handle The Latest FLASH and or other media formats.

Good To Know DAX is still very much active on producing homebrew such as his great custom firmwares. Without your custom firmwares there wouldnt be much PSP sales! this is fact hehehe.
thanks alex and team!

 » I'm sure

That the savesate function works the same way as standby.
Maybe the PSP stores temperary savesate normally in the ram ready for you to turn it back on. I'm sure they've figured out how to get this data onto the Stick.

But that's only what I think.
Will be kewl

   Re: Nathanias - 2008-06-22
 » That's what I was thinking too

Hold a button going into Standby to save, and then at any point hold that button going out of standby to be back where you were

Hasn't they also said they may be thinking of dropping the 1.50 kernel add-on, so as to get developers to make brew for the higher kernels now...

   Re: akadewboy - 2008-06-22
 » Yeah

Yeah in the pspgen article they mention it. There's always Time Machine if you need to run the 1.50 kernel.

 » M33 All The Way!

Whew!

Lucky M33 has saved us
That GEN Custom FirmWare was very dodgy and even bricked peoples PSP's when they got out of games

With M33's solid reputation and excellent coding skills, this CFW will be out in no time and will be the best one yet

   Re: c74gta4smash - 2008-06-22
 » So true

Gen's firmwares were very crappy and full of holes. DAX M33's firmwares are always the most stable.

   Re: majorbb100 - 2008-06-22
 » yeah

yeah, but that is only because GEN is so new to the cfw game that they dont have any experience, dark alex's first cfw was the same way

   Re: Krisman - 2008-06-22
 » I don't think your being fair

I use 3.95 GEN-2 with no problems. Sure there were mistakes made but Miriam is still early in CFW development hasn't been doing it nearly as long as the others and Miriam is one person not a team of people like M33 so its harder to make sure everything is functioning properly.

   Re: Dragoon - 2008-06-24
 » Well..

While M33 is still the best, let us not put down other CFW devs in the *rare* occasion that DA disappears again. Where would we be then?
Sure, his stuff isn't quite as reliable, and it can also be directly linked to inexperience, but he is trying. And I'm thankful that he is even here at all.

In the end, it's always nice to have competition. Especially in the modding community, and when it's all 'freeware'.

rpg games will be good with savestates, ooo and fighting games when u need to be somewhere but u dont wana loose the fight, nice work, i never thought something like that would work

 » Yay

I've been waiting from an official CFW update from M33 since 3.90. I won't update from anyone else (including that guy who gave us that other update a few weeks ago). That savestate feature is awesome I might actually be able to beat God of War on God mode now :-D

   Re: Metal Jody - 2008-06-22

i've already beaten it xP

you never really beat that game until u play it on god mode. Its like the only mode that you really need to use the parry feature and fight with perfection in order to beat a bunch of ppl. Best game on psp without a doubt

This savestate support... I know at least one game it will be very useful with. The first Pursuit Force. Now I don't know about Extreme Justice, but the missions in first PF are just so long it's ridiculous!

I hope they fixed this in Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice.

» 3.93 cfw had these two features, impress me with these plus more!

i hope theres more addons than just inxmb recovery and savegame state.3.93 already had that, and no guys, teamgens custom firmware has never bricked my psp.chances are you just did something stupid.i do agree however 3.95 had a small bug whitch made you have to reboot to use mem stick after getting out of usb mode or booting with a umd disc in it,but meh team m33 and dax have had issues with their stuff as well.why you think they have 3.90 m33-3 etc.its trial and error guys.noones perfect.

team m33 might have made most the firmware,in fact the 3.93 and 3.95 were reversed 3.90 m33-3 with a couple added features and compatibility updates, but more or less the same as m33.ive used 3.93 cfw for some time now,and what they mention just sounds like 3.93 all over again.impress me team m33.you did create the best firmware dont get me wrong.but cmon now impress me with something other than the iinxmb recovery and the savegame option.add those but add some other things that will catch my interest.i have faith you can do it

   Re: GameLordOmega - 2008-06-22

 » Save state!

That is awsome!!

Now I may be able to beat Metal Gear, and also Killzone. I only can play my psp in 15 minutes spurts, so this helps a LOT!

I am sure it will be nice for other games too.

Also I doubt it has to do with standby mode on the PSP. but if it works, who cares how its executed.

   Re: majorbb100 - 2008-06-22
 » haha

why can you only play your psp in 15 minute "spurts"? haha

   Re: zoogr2 - 2008-06-22
 » @majorbb

I also have the same problem, I can only play like when im waiting in the bus stop or sometimes between clases (or in the can) , that made me play only hombrew games or little games like mario. This addition is AWSOME!!

   Re: m3rox - 2008-06-22
 » @zoogr2 and Stinky_1

wtf? Are your parents really that strict?

   Re: Stinky_1 - 2008-06-22
 » no!

Not parents that are that strict, its my wife!!!! I play when the kids are occupied. I mostly play it at work. I work in maintenance, so I can only play while things are working good. Some days I only get 5 - 15 minutes between things breaking. So I have to shut it off and go fix them up. The problem is I put it in standby and then forget to put the charger on, the next day the battery is dead, my clock is reset and my game is NOT saved.

So if I have this I can save my current state, then shut the psp down (not sleep mode) that way the battery lasts longer and I can always resume my game whenever I want.
   by DanWild - 2008-06-22
 » YAY!

Can't wait. I used GEN custom firmware and went back to M33 as it is more stable!
Hopefully the cxmb.prx plugin works on 4.00 M33!

 » Save States

Thats a great feature I was wishing that I could make savestates earlier today so this is great news. In XMB recovery is cool. Thats my main reason for using GEN right now instead of M33

What's your problem? You don't like people being able to run emulators?

   Re: Nathanias - 2008-06-22
 » show me an emulator

That hasn't been ported to 3.XX and I'll show you a liar

   Re: 73N5H1 - 2008-06-23
 » yeah

yeah, I've never understood why people are still hanging on to the 1.5 kernel either... There should be no reason to still be running it... most homebrew has been ported to 3.xx already and leaving the kernel just give's people a reason to still code things for 1.5 which is inconvenient for everyone.
   by redbrick - 2008-06-22
 » Amazing....

Sony posts a POS ware then comes CFW(DA) to save the stink from getting any worse. I'm impressed with the homebrew scene. I hope and pray that this scene cracks the PS3 to hell and the flood of crapware can then be filtered out. This save state feature is a significant feature you'd think Sony would have put out....but no...tsk, tsk. tsk....

 » skype for phat?

I was really hoping that DAX would find a way to put skype on the phat. I know that it only has 32mg of memory compared to the slims 64mg but I was praying for a way. I guess I'll have to let go of that dream :( On the bright side, woohoo 4.0 cfw sounds great!
