Okay, if it doesn't look WonderSwan, then there's at least one improvement. - Image 1

Perhaps Square Enix is intent on making 2007 the Year of the RPG PSP... or the Year of the Square-Enix PSP. Either way, when word broke out that Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls would be coming to the PSP to celebrate 20 years of Final Fantasy, let's say people wanted to know what's new with this version, after having appeared on the GBA and PSOne (and the WonderSwan Color). Anyway, we've got four direct screencaps of FFI & II: Dawn of Souls from Famitsu, of which they proclaim as "becoming beautiful with PSP," but no (easily translated) additional details to satisfy our curiosity.

So we did a bit of digging, went over to the official Squeenix.jp site for FFI & 2, and went through their promotional stuff. Here's what we found... presuming what very limited Japanese skills we have in the room right now hasn't failed us (It's under the "New Information" hotlink bubble). If you want, head on over via the link and give your own linguistic skills a shot.
  • "2D dot graphics"? Well, the graphics are certainly hotter than usual, especially compared to the GBA version (let alone the NES), but no comparisons to the PSOne port (itself developed from the WonderSwan port). We detect a subtle improvement there, if any.
  • "High-end" renditions of the PSOne cinematics. Also two scenarios from the GBA port, including Souls of Chaos and Rebirth... and something about a music player (but the GBA had that, too. Perhaps the PSOne-quality OST?).
  • Artwork gallery, presumably accessible from the game - which was on the PSOne release as well.
From the info gleaned, what we can make of this so far is that the PSP remake will contain all that is in the PSOne Final Fantasy Origins and GBA Dawn of Souls remakes in one package, probably/maybe spruced up or given an extra polish for that "20th anniversary" feel (higher graphics and audio quality, etc.?). If there are more bonuses to the game, we've yet to see them, and Squeenix hasn't let slip on them yet. Hey, if it's 20th anniversary, the least Squeenix could do is celebrate it with a bang.

Dawn of Souls redux. But the widescreen tells you it's the PSP. - Image 1 Dawn of Souls redux. But the widescreen tells you it's the PSP. - Image 2 Dawn of Souls redux. But the widescreen tells you it's the PSP. - Image 3

 » WOW

To say the very least, square has been severely dissapointing me the past 5 or so years... they cheat and take old games and port them, add a gimmick, barely update it and cal it a remake... I was afraid this "remake" was gonna be another direct port of the PSONE game, but based on the screenshots, the sprites are COMPLETELY redone in a much fuller resolution... and I have to say they look GREAT and I am SOOOO impressed. (Just look at the battle screenshot!) Good on ya, Square. It's time you start making up for all your bloody mistakes.

1st poster, Get A Life, you dirty scavenger

Back to topic.

Yea, it seem to look a lot more detailed... or at least more crisp. I might end up getting these afterall. Here is hoping they also do FFIV, V, and VI remakes for the PSP.

Cheers!

"We detect a subtle improvement there, if any."

Obviously you didn't play the Wonderswan -> PSOne -> GBA ports. These are not subtle differences! Every sprite has been redone in higher resolution :)

There's not much there written in Japanese. Aspect ratio is now in Cinemascope (widescreen), improved graphics and music.

I'll definitely have to pick this up. It'll help me catch up on my final fantasy history since I only played 6 & up. I refused to touch the older ones because of the outdated looks. The gfx of my generation truly spoiled me. This edition looks good, and the best way to thank Square for bringing the FF series in my household for all these years is the buy their releases.

The gameplay in the "Dawn of Souls" is butchered from the original NES version. You'd be better off breaking a few copyright laws if you want to catch up on the FF history.

 » How do you know?

It's not even out yet, but you feel it's fair to judge the game. Despite whether your statement is true, I'll take my chances and purchase the title. As I said, it's the best way to thank the company for bringing the world of Final fantasy to us in the first place.

add FF I, II, and III(VI) if that were/is possible. Now that would be great.

» Probably the ultimate port...of a couple obsolete games.

Crap. I just bought this for the GBA on eBay. But I'm so obsessive from a collector's standpoint that I'll probably buy this just to download a saved game with a full bestiary to ogle.

I don't care to play through the entire games again for a second time though. Classic games, but not much replay value given their barebones stories. Final Fantasy I is boring enough as it is. The NES game was hard as hell, but most bosses on the oft-ported remake are too easy, killed in 1 turn if you have a Warrior and Fighter, maybe 2 turns with a Warrior and Red Mage equipped with the best swords found so far.

Note to Square-Enix: if your ignorant asses want to make money, remake Final Fantasy VII. These past few years have been like Ford shipping Escorts to a classic muscle car dealership. Square-Anus needs to wise up. These fools keep putting out lame spinoffs of FFVII, fail to update the one game that a.) has the biggest collection of fanboy zealots and b.) made them the most money, and keep on porting this pair of duds. At least the morons got Final Fantasy Tactics right.

We want 3D!!
If I wanted 2D, I would've bought a DS instead.
Square, stop laughing at us... I'm not buying such game when I already have the GBA rom...

No 2D is just fine thank you very much, it's new games that people want.

 » Who told you?

I'm expecting a REAL REMAKE, not a port...
They should have done what they did to FF7, a PS3 remake!!!!

» I would have rather had no improvements

It would have been way better for them to put Final Fantasy 1-6 all on one UMD, with the GBA port features for each of them. I guess that would mean that they would need to remake FF3 with GBAish sprite graphics, but I'd pay 100 dollars for such a compilation! As it is, I've already bought these particular games three times. I'm not buying them again one at a time!
