PSP Firmware update brings Go!Messenger icon, Skype PSP - Image 1Well folks, thanks to a tip from Shinbu-Otaku, we finally managed to find a Press Release for the arrival of Sony's 3.90 Firmware for the PSP.

In it, we found the well-known announcement of Skype for the PSP, but also one other thing that should be of interest to future-minded folks who want more functionality on their PSPs (or who can't use PSP Skype).

Call it a reminder of the future: it's the Go!Messenger Icon, a sort of placeholder for the features that'll be added in a future update. Here's what the press release had to say about it:

Go!Messenger, with the ability for video and voice chat, as well as numerous other features will be available at the end of February, and the presence of the icon not only emphasises (sic) its impending arrival but also allows users to obtain more information about the feature from a dedicated website, accessed via clicking on the icon.

In other words, it's a teaser icon for users that gives more information on the Go!Messenger product.

There is one thing that does give us pause, however. The press release also mentions that Go!Messenger will be available at the end of February. This might mean that another firmware update is scheduled for that time to introduce Go!Messenger.

We're not entirely sure if that's the case, but it's a possibility that can't be ignored. Till we get more answers from Sony about how they'll implement Go!Messenger, feel free to add your own thoughts in the comments below.

Thanks to Shinbu-Otaku for the tip!

 » Where?

Where in the world is this icon? I've upgraded my slim to 3.90 and don't see it anywhere.

We haven't upgraded our PSP either, so we're a bit unsure as well. It might be European only, but I doubt it. :)

in the "Network" tab, below the Internet Browser.
My PSP is a Eyropean one (model 1004)

It's definitely not in the US firmware.

All I did was install North American Firmware 3.90 on an Austrialian "PSP Slim And Lite"

Also when the icon is highlighted the info bar says you can press triangle for options, but it doesn't do anything.

I don't care what anybody says, QJ is still the best PSP site.

 » Thats the idea

Sony will continue to support the PSP-2000 because it is designed for more with its increased memory and flash space and they will reduce support for the PSP-1000 because they want you to upgrade. You are not being left out, you just simply need to upgrade thats all.

   Re: Mistabeen - 2008-01-30
» if they want me to update

if they want me to update, fine. But I would like a compensation in exchange for my old PSP, because I don't feel like paying the same amount twice just because sony felt like updating the PSP.
what they are doing now is a nice example of bad support and customercare

   Re: skoomaeater - 2008-01-30
 » Console Evolution

Not really. What they are doing is adding more functionality to the PSP which has reached its limit thus requiring an upgrade. I don't complain to Nintendo when the GBA SP was released that I should get some compensation for my GBA. You can always trade it at GameStop for 50 USD in credit and put that towards a PSP-2000. To be honest, you are lucky Sony is even updating the PSP-1000, and you can expect many more PSP-2000 only updates in the future and perhaps even some PSP-2000 only games. It isn't unfair, it's console evolution, something has got to be left behind.

 » ....

Sorry, but I have to agree with skoomaeater.

there will be always new consoles, by 2015 the PS3 will be old.
Doing what Mistabeen says is the same like you want to exchange your PS2 with the PS3.

   Re: GaveUpTomorrow - 2008-01-30
 » Don't count on any...

Slim only games...its not going to happen. Games will be developed for the slim, meaning that they will load faster, but the fat will still be able to run any game, just with a longer loading time.

   Re: Jonathanx7 - 2008-01-30
 » dont upgrade

original psp-psp slim.
ps1-ps2-ps3
xbox-xbox360

all except the psp, when these systems were upgraded they came with massive! and awesome! upgrades. what did the psp slim bring? slimmer lighter a little more flash. oooooo wooooow! thats sooo much! ***** you. thats what you call grade A BS. especially! since the original can do pretty much everything the slim can. so when you have the choice of paying like $300 for something slim and lite and more flash, OR paying nothing to get pretty much everything the slim can do and tons and tons more(or maybe even pay a few dollars to get someone to downgrade your psp for you), which would you do? 1 or 2?

i say until sony makes the slim worth buying or comes out with psp 2 or 3 or whatever, dont buy another one. cause when you really think about it, its for *****ing games. which at this point both systems are the same. you really think people would rather get on their psp's to call someone then on their CELLPHONES?

Sony is a pretty retarded company when it comes to the psp.

 » To: Jonathanx7

The PSP slim is not a new generation, like the PS1 to PS2, Xbox to Xbox 360 upgrades, etc.

It's just a hardware revision. Like the slim versions of the PS1 and PS2, the DS Lite and the Gameboy Advance SP.

 » Should be PHAT compatible

Now granted, I don't have any information, but I believe the Go! Messenger thing should work on the PSP Phat... The reason I say this is because this feature was announced at a European conference a while back, before the Slim and Lite was even released. It was when they announced the Go GPS, Go Camera, and Go Messenger all together. That being said, they had videos of it being used on PSP Phats, which gives me hope that us Phat users will be able to use it as well.

I wish this gives someone out there Hope.. for a world filled with crime, war, and poverty, hope is all we have...

(ROFL.. sorry for that last line, i thought it was comical to include : P)

Does anybody know how much flash space is left on the PSP-1000 after the 3.90 upgrade?

There may not be enough for the icon, the program, the picture in the about PSP section and other stuff.

How much more space does expanded network title support take up?

Also - The Go!Edit software for the Go!Cam is stored on the Memory Stick so why can't they just make Go! Messenger a Memory Stick application?

This may happen (atleast I'm hoping) and the icon under "Network" may be removed.
I should probably suggest it to SONY.

I hope I covered everything I intended to.

 » Should be, won't be.

While I don't doubt that they *could* do it, I highly doubt they *will* do it, when it's an easy way to "encourage" us to upgrade.

I, for one, don't give a damned about Skype and messenger, though I see how the features would be really popular with the younger crowd (who don't have company-paid-for cellphones).

 » @ Jonathanx7

First of all your comparing a next gen console to the upgraded model there not the same thing!
And besides Sony has been making Slim&Light models of every system they make, PS1 had a Slim, PS2 had a kick ass Slim, and the PS3 will eventually get a slim model as well, and all had slightly new features. The only difference is that PS1/PS2 never had firmware updates, so yes the differences were minor but still made the console better...
And PSP Slim is not PSP2 get that straight. Besides there is way more potential for homebrew and other stuff for the slim anyway Like higher RAM and TV out.

Oh yeah by the way I don't know where the hell you buy your systems but I bought my Phat for $250 when it came out and the new (upgraded) Slim version for $170 on opening day... thats pretty darn cheap for a upgraded version. And don't call Sony retarded when it comes to the PSP Comparing it to cell phones, WTF Skype was requested by many users to be placed on the PSP to chat with people in game or to send them a nice FREE message over the internet Dee Da Dee

If this not on psp phat I never going to buy another "Made in china" products

then youd be limiting your game and console choices alot. most crap is made in china/japan/third world countries because of cheap labor.

 » damn it sony

this is not cool sony.this to all the ppl that are saying the psp needed an upgrade and all i mean how hard cud it hav been to think of putting more than freakin' 32MB of flash0 space. thats the most retarted thing to do if you really wanted the psp to get to its full potential, sony just wants to make a whole bunch of money by cheating their customers. maybe after a year sony will release "psp aero" or something along those lines that is about 30 grams lighter and has 80MB of flsah0 space and something like divx files are supported only on the "psp aero". then the psp slim owners would know how us loyal psp phat owners feel like. my point is sony sony could have put even more than 64 MB of flash0 in the original psp, they're obviously smart enoughbut they didnt. they're just like microsoft that had already designed the xbox 360 when they released the original xbox

» get over it psp phat owners

Stop complaining that you are left behind.
Technology evolves and soon or later your product will allways be outdated. It's like ps2 owners complaining that they are left behind now the ps3 has seen the light... :s

Do as i did. I put my psp phat on ebay, even stated it was a custom firmware (allthough nowadays you might get a copyright warning from ebay) and in no time it was sold and I even made a nice profit with it too.
Got a psp slim now. If ever a newer psp model comes out i'll do the same with my psp slim. So stop whining and take action. There's always a sucker out there who's willing to buy a psp phat ( j/k) ;-)
