gpsIn an earlier article we already told you that the GPS for the PSP will be available for sale in Japan on December 7th, and that it will be sold for 6,000 yen (which is roughly $52 for us). But now, we bring you more information about the PSP GPS such as its technical specs, the games in which the GPS can be used, and other software that would support the GPS. Stay with us as we go through this as quick as we can, and we promise you, you'll be seeing stars after this, and we mean that quite literally.

First, let's tackle the technical specs on this baby. The PSP GPS will have a 20-channel reception system with a frequency of 1575.42MHz (L1 ban, C/A code). It would take 40 seconds before it could acquire your position, and refreshes the information about your location every second after that. The positioning precision is 5m, or 16 ft., which means that its accuracy in reporting your position will be (at most) 16 ft. from where you're actually standing. Pretty cool, huh?

The PSP GPS weighs around 16g, measures 45 x 41 x 17mm (W x H x D), and as you can see in the image above, goes directly into the USB port on your PSP. Now, what can the GPS actually do for your PSP aside from knowing your exact location? You can also use it for astronomic observation via the "Planetarium Creator Homestar Portable" navigation tool, which contains information on over 5 million stars, 300 heavenly objects, and over 15 planetarium style shows. And with the GPS receiver, you'll not only be able to see the stars that are actually over your head, but also get information about them, like this:

If you're a smooth talker with a passion for astronomy, the PSP GPS might just be your ultimate date tool. But now, on to more pressing matters: how the GPS will be used for your games! Or maybe we should reserve this for a later article, what do you think? Hmm? Kidding, of course we'll give it to you now!

Honestly, we're not so sure how the GPS will work with games, and it's not like we have anything like this on the market to compare it with. On their part, Sony also hasn't clarified how GPS will enhance video gaming. But, they have announced that Konami's Metal Gear Portable Ops and their own Hot Shots Golf (aka Everybody's Golf) will be able to use the GPS feature.

Sony remains tight-lipped on this matter, especially for Metal Gear, but they did HINT at how the GPS would prove to be a nifty tool for Hot Shots Golf: through the "Downloadable Golf course data" and 'Simulation for shot." For now, we can only guess how the GPS will be used in Portable Ops, care to share your thoughts on this?

i know this may sound redundant because its GPS, but i was wondering if i would be able to place a destination and the PSPGPS would direct me to it, just like the GPS that is used today. I am wondering also if it would need to have it's own UMD or Memstick to store all the information and POI's. Thanks in advance!

Ok, first off, I love it when someone misses out on first comment, and ends up looking like a tool. lol

Second, this actually sounds pretty cool, I will most likely be buying one, if it can be made to work on 1.5 (or emulated 2.71)

"Will this require a wireless internet connection to work "

NO! GPS signals come from the satelites above your head. There is no charge for receiving the signals! It has NOTHING to do with WIFI, GPRS, Cable, Internet etc.

   by WorriedTom (Unregistered) - 2006-09-04

I haven't had a GPS before but if you can log a location in and it will guide you there (like a gps should) (not just download map and show you where you are!!!) then it will be cool!!!!
BUT A BUGGER IF IT WONT WORK ON 1.5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but mabee if it only works on 1.5 then some 1 could make there own app to work with the official sony GPS reseever!!!!!!!!!
(just a thought??????) (i know som1 has made a homebrew app on the psp "map this (or summit like that) for reseving map's on the fly so mabee that could b used with sony's GPS resever ??????
im no dev but the sony reseever will probably have to b cracked or somthing (but the fellow homebrew devolpers out there havent let security updates stop em!!!!!!

I AM NOT SURE, SOMEONE TOLD ME IT ONLY WORK IN JAPAN?

   by WarLord - 2006-09-04
 » Excellent

But what I'm really hoping for is a sattellite radio accessory.

   by Salesmunn (Unregistered) - 2006-09-04

GPS in Everybody's Golf will allow you to golf on the terrain you are located on, which will be created using the GPS link on your position.

How does that sound?

   by noone (Unregistered) - 2006-09-04
 » ha.

no mention of nav software...

to me that is the only reason to have a gps.

it could be fun if you had to physically move to your new ball position to take your next shot. until you end up in the middle of a street...

but my dreams are never going to come true - anyone reckon there will be umd navigation maps for Perth Australia? or (insert your town here)? not likely. umd nav soft and downloadable maps is the only way to make this sh|t sell.

   by deadnoob (Unregistered) - 2006-09-04
 » hm

nav soft is a def must have with a gps.

and i really with they would tell how this can work with games and hopefully sony wont mess up like they did with UMD's and take advantage of a good idea

   by deadnoob (Unregistered) - 2006-09-04
 » sorry

just read the actual article on psp-vault. has a lot more info on nav stuff.

so go check out psp-vault for the full story if you want more info

   by adry (Unregistered) - 2006-09-04

whoever said this needs wireless internet connections is WRONG, it uses sattilites in space, you need atleast 3 sattelites so it can figure out where u are, the reciever RECIEVES the satteliets beams and finds where u are!!

my guess is that the gps is used in games to move around, like walking in a game, or maybe to turn like if your facing north and then turn to the south, it also turns in the game

idk but it sounds fun!!

no sat nav software? I knew sony would mess this up. Long live MapThis!

   by bobcolgon (Unregistered) - 2006-09-05
» who says no satnav software?

As far as i'm concerned, if this doesn't come with satnav software with maps for the region you live in (e.g. USA edition & Europe Edition) then it's a complete waste of time. Or even if the GPS is offered standalone, there is at least likely to be some packs available where you can buy it with satnav software. The other functions of this GPS are mostly gimmicks. I refuse to believe that sony would put such a product out without also releasing satnav software anyway.
