Re_Animate has got a brilliant idea and he'd like to share it to you, guys. Basically, this concept is for a PSP Game Maker, maybe in VB or C# or C or C++ (we told you it's still just a concept).

Anyhow, you might be wondering how come we're posting an idea instead of an end-product. Well obviously, this guy's new at developing stuff for the brew community, but that doesn't mean we should just ignore his ideas. Besides, that's what this is all about: encouraging and supporting budding brewers. So, be nice, patient, and check out what he's got to say. You never know, your critique might do him a whole lot of good for this project.

Here are his concept sketches:

just click to get a bigger view - Image 1 just click to get a bigger view - Image 2 just click to get a bigger view - Image 3 just click to get a bigger view - Image 4

And here are his ideas for the custom Lua code for "advanced people":
  • pressing add sprite would be like: first copy the file to the games temp folder then add the code to the beginning of the index.lua code its editing
  • load.image("data/sprite.png")
  • or something
Okay, so we're not so sure what "or something" would actually entail, but still... Anyway, he's also thinking if it could be possible to use the source for the Lua player for windows and mod it to fit here for testing the game. And then maybe, use a precompiled case that needs a index.lua file that it follows.

Or, OR! (excited ramble to follow suit) if you want, Re_Animate says, "we can (maybe) incorporate the Lua encrypter to encrypt the .lua code you make so no one can take it. With this software, just about anyone could make a homebrew! (applause and hootcalls).

So, what do you guys think? If you've got any suggestions or comments, feel free to voice them out right here, or over at the forums, we're sure Re_Animate's there eager for feedback.

 » Amazing

So this "Game Maker" concept makes LUA CODE??? As far as I could tell, that's what he was saying with the "custom Lua code". If you cannot learn Lua programming, then you have no hope in learning programming/game design, period. After all, Lua is one of the simplest languages known to man.

   Re: jeezus (Unregistered) - 2007-03-12
 » LUA CODE?!

if everyone has the same encrypter/decrypter software from this thing (for encrypting LUA), and a dev releases an encrypted lua game, then couldn't someone just decrypt it and then use it? it's still open source, unless Re_Animate decides to make it so everyone can do their own encryption algorithm, but that would be a pain... anyway though, good luck trying to make it. it would work a lot better with CC++ code only, than LUA in my opinion though

Ok, this is great, but in fact, there have been lots of tools or concepts like this, an they were really fake...

A 'Game maker' isn't just adding sprites. Where you are investing many time to copy a file, we could do it ourselves. You need skills to make a game. I haven't seen a *good* game before that was made by someone that didn't knew how to write Hello World.

I like your idea and respect it, but this is a waste of your time ;)

No offense to Re_Animate, but... why is QJ posting program concepts as news? Bloggers, go to the forums sometime. It's FULL of concepts.

This sort of "hey lookie here - I've written one line (or in this case none but drawn a crappy picture of a text editor) of code and I'm releasing it as a 'work-in-progress'/'it's my first lua game'" rubbish is exactly the reason I'm stopping reading PSPUpdates.

Signal to noise ratio too high - a concept/incomplete lua script of 10 lines is not news.

er... QJ, this is not news...
A guy has ripped off the user interface of GameMaker (a real program at the above address) and drawn it craply.
Yes, it would be a good idea for a PSP gamemaker... is there anything more than just a few scribbles on paper?

 » MMF Player

I think it would be a very good idea if someone can make multimedia fusion files playable on psp. Personally I think thats the easiest way to make games. I had a lot of fun making games with multimedia fusion and I think it would be awsome to have a mmf player for psp. The program can be cpu heavy if there are a lot of high quality sprites in one screen, but I have only experienced that at 1024x768 resolution. I don't see a problem with psp using 320x240 resolution. It's probably not possible as I don't know anything about programming. This is just an idea.

   Re: Synical (Unregistered) - 2007-03-12
 » C# is a .net language.

You're going to have a hell of a time porting the .NET runtime libraries to the PSP.

Stick with C.

 » new programming language?

Your pretty much asking for someone to develop a new programming language for common users - which is very very hard - seeing how there are only 1 or two released EVER for any platform and even those are restrictive. Good luck, i suck at C++.

   Re: Dude (Unregistered) - 2007-03-12
 » ???

What are you talking about? Did the PC suddenly not become a "platform"?

There's BASIC, Liberty BASIC, etc. BASIC, C, C++, Objective-C, Objective-C++, Perl, Python, Lisp, Ruby, Assembly, etc. Is that one or two releases?

seriously.

(note: see the optimistic world of warcraft project without a coder)

Why the hell is this crap posted here?

When half of the article is explaining that you need to bear with the other half of the article for incompleteness and half-thought-out ideas, it's not news. Get this trash off of here.

 » re_animate

wow u guys made a beter summery then i did lol

1, I didnt ask for this to be here i just noticed it

2, why the hell not to have a psp game maker i mean anyone could make a psp game and i dont have to know C or C++ to make this game i can use guess what.... VB or C# or java what ever its just basicly sorting out code plus

3 this would be a good stand alone lua compiler for any lua programmer seeing as it would have a built in test function and compile function so you wont have to create a comand line to make it test it....

4 the psp WOW was a bad idea and i know that this isnt a bad idea and its not fair to say that i suck cuz i had a bad idea b4, your just dumb then... just cuz i come up with lotsa ideas a lot of the time and sometimes they arnt good doesnt mean that when i come up with a gud idea its bad

5 you guys really gota think of constructive comments rather then 'this sucks', tell me why it sucks dont, you try make it if you think your so good!

   by Re_Animate (Unregistered) - 2007-03-12
 » also

i DIDNT SAY I WANT TO PORT THESE ONTO THE PSP

im saying that USE C, vb, vb.net, C# whatever to code this because this is a windows program that compiles LUA code for the psp

when i say cistom code i mean this, all the button along the top have function, when i press the add sprite button it adds a image to the program as well as move the image to a folder calld data/gfx in the games temp folder, then theres the add sound, then add custom script... if there isnt a button that you need or the button you want isnt there use custom script to make it work. cuztom script is basicly code the LUA yourself and add it to the program...

ill add a feture for all you lua coders out there that when you open the game maker there will be a dialog that asks if you want to code it yourself or design it with function buttons so you can choose to code with a built in compiler or design a psp program with a GUI....

HAPPY?

Cool! I wouldn't mind if I easily could make a simple homebrew, I never get to learn how to code games and progs. anyway.

Even though it will result in endless crapy homebrew I think it will also give the "real" homebrewers many great ideas that they could work more on and we could get lots of great homebrew!

» OMG WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU ALL ON ABOUT???

hey guys look i dont care what the hell it looks like or if it takes a long time ok?

this is one of the best ideas thats been given to the community in a long time, wouldnt you all like to make your own games?????

YES?????

exactly so the point is,is that if you keep flaming then its never going to get done is it...

so just everyone be fair and give him some proper feedback...

   by Zzap64 (Unregistered) - 2007-03-13
 » *sigh*

"this is one of the best ideas thats been given to the community in a long time, wouldnt you all like to make your own games?????"

yes.. so Id go learn a programming language instead of taking the short route and gimping myself with a language that will only realise a quarter of the potential Id like to.

No offence to LUA or its users (I use it a lot myself) but its a quick fix to release garbage and call yourself a 'coder'..

If you wannna create games using basic scripts and with limited functionality.. knock yourself out making this GUI/LUA compiler whatever it is (even though surely LUA Player and its respective features will do just the same) but its not news unless its done and its far from the best thing ever for the PSP scene because if this is sucessfull all you'll get is a flood of crappy homebrew done in LUA just like when creating crappy 'shells' were all the rage yet all the decent devs will still be using a language worth its salt.

Seriously, if you wanna help people make games for PSP and you really want people to make good hombrew.. spend your time giving some people crash courses in C++ instad of giving morons the means to churn out *****e, call it homebrew and get an ego stroke from telling forum kiddies that there coders.

Qj, you should know better. You money hungry, non gaming, lame, fake *****s. Stop giving teenagers blogging rights and sort yourselves out.

This site was better back in the PSP hacker days before you caught onto a money maker and bought it up.. just like When WoWinsider caught on a little all of a sudden you have your own WoW blog aswell.. funny that. But your not going for the popular markets at all, not in it for the money..

Crap research in 'slow news day' posts, posts on the forum about using copyrighted material then every day on thefront page its crap homebrew after crap homebrew using copyrighted names.. PSP(insert mainstream game title here) made by some 14 year old with no orginal idea, just a port or rehash of existing trademarks. How the majority of release on here get any credit I dont know. These days all you have to do is know basic code to move a sprite around a screen then rip some other companies trademarked intellectual property to use. Im sorry, anyone can go to the library and pick a C++ book up and learn basic code.. it takes skill to write a good plot, come up with characters, scenes.. IDEAS!

PLEASE stop encouraging the scriptkiddie mentality thats killing this scene and making it look a joke!
