PSP games we're waiting for - Image 1

Regardless of what the semi-anonymous Mr. Tummy had to say about the PSP game list looking dry, the set of titles coming out for the PSP this year is still very, very compelling.

Given EBGames' recent dissing of the PSP, we felt that now would be an appropriate time to present that much tauted PSP upcoming list to you folks. But before we give you folks the list, we have to note that because this blogger is a bit lazy, a lot of games got left out of the list, meaning that the list of titles available for your PSP could still be potentially deeper than this.

What follows are the reasons why PSP owners are still loyal to the Sony handheld.

THE CUTE
No, there isn't a shortage of cute, casual, kid friendly, newbie enticing games on the PSP. Loco Roco, Exit, and Me and My Katamari are excellent examples that "fun" titles can be had on the PSP, too.

Hot PXL - Image 1

HOT PXL - Comprised of more than 200 devious mini-games, this offering from Atari is set to show up on shelves come October. What's nice is that it isn't just a collection of cute/insane short tasks, it has a story.

Earthworm Jim - Image 1

Earthworm Jim - Puzzles, power-ups, and zany side scrolling action from the folks of Atari. Yeah, he's the biggest worm in entertainment.

Dead Head Fred - Image 1

Dead Head Fred - You're a brain in a jar. Whatever the folks from D3 were smoking, we want some

Great games we'd like to include here, but are out already: Capcom Puzzle World, Gurumin, and Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters

THE MEAN
You're a competitor. You love fighting. You love killing. You love having freedom to do whatever the hell it is you want. You also dig the dual D-pad FPS set-up. If explosions, blood, and plasma weapons are what's important to you, look out for these titles.

Coded Arms: Contagion - Image 1

Coded Arms: Contagion - You're a lone security agent entering a virtual reality military training program and you're up against cyber-terrorists. Slick graphics, nice design. And despite the reported learning curve with the controls, the gameplay is still smooth.

Burnout Dominator - Image 1

Burnout Dominator - Screw defensive driving. This game teaches you how to drive aggressively.

Call of Duty - Image 1

Call of Duty: Roads to Victory - Just in case you still need your WWII fix.

Rainbow Six Vegas - Image 1

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas - No crime scene investigators here, just lots of bullets, terrorists, and solid gameplay from Ubisoft.

Chili Con Carnage - Image 1

Chili Con Carnage - The release date for this game is set for the 27th of this month. Destroy everything with Ramiro Cruz come that date.

300: March to Glory - Image 1

300: March to Glory - We'll be seeing this on shelves in roughly a weeks time and judging from the blood, gore, and mayhem we've seen so far in the trailers, the game looks promising.

Xyanide Resurrection - Image 1

Xyanide Resurrection - Proving that shooters still pack a punch. If you love seeing the screen get filled with plasma balls, watch out for this game.

Great games we'd like to include here, but are out already: Killzone: Liberation and The Warriors (you can't get meaner than the Warriors).

AND THE GEEKY
You're in it for the backstory. That or you're already part of the game's adherents. You love the franchise and therefore - following the holy rules of fandom - must own or have intimate knowledge of extensions of that franchise. There are PSP games out there that scream "for otaku". If you're still a bit too occupied with Portable Ops, then worry. There are more titles coming your way.

Hellboy - Image 1

Hellboy - If you're a loyal fan of the BPRD and all things involving fictional Nazi plots to rule the world, you're getting this game.

Elder Scrolls PSP - Image 1

Elder Scrolls Travels: Oblivion - If you're geeky enough, but JRPG stuff isn't for you, wait for April 16, you should see Bethesda's PSP offering on shelves by then.

Valhalla Knights PSP - Image 1

Valhalla Knights - This game was insanely hot back at TGS 2006, we thank XSEED for putting this on shelves come April.

Dungeons and Dragons Tactics - Image 1

Dungeons and Dragons Tactics - Enjoy the 3.5 d20 system on your PSPs this May.

Great games we'd like to include here, but are out already: Monster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth

Great games we'd like to include here but forgot to mention: Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles

BONUS: THE EAGERLY AWAITED
Then there are the games that have their release dates still pinned as TBA. There are also those games whose actual existence on the PSP is still a matter of speculation and rumor. Still, despite the murky details, the demand for these titles is such that it provides enough reason for PSP owners to be loyal to the platform.

We hope that these "wanted" titles explain exactly why the PSP owners are still loyal and are still waiting.

Final Fantasy on the PSP - Image 1

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War, Final Fantasy Anniversary
- We think the addition of the words "Final" and "Fantasy" pretty much explains why people are waiting for these games that are still pegged at "TBA 2007."

Jeanne d'Arc - Image 1

Jeanne d'Arc - Will this game ever see a U.S. release? All we can do right now is speculate. However, what is known is that most reviews for this game rank it pretty close to 10 of 10. That says a lot.

Silent Hill: Origins - Image 1

Silent Hill: Origins - the Japanese release date for this game is December 31, 2007. Will we see a simultaneous U.S. release for this game? Who knows. What we do know is, we want this, we want this bad.

God of War - Image 1

God of War - Either the folks from RAD did that "coming soon" font thing to hype this, or somebody slipped up and got fired.

Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry - The Jeux-France report about Capcom's intentions of bringing the franchise to the PSP still stands. Although we don't have much other than a statement of intention, the demand for this game is such that the rumors just won't die.

Awaited games we wanted to include here, but forgot to put in: Loco Roco 2

So why the continued bad PR?
So how come the PSP is still getting so much bad PR despite the healthy list of titles available for handheld? Well, you can't say that the thing isn't selling. Despite being massively outsold by the more popular DS, it's still putting up decent numbers. So what's the problem? Some of us here at QJ would like to point out the musings of Penny Arcade's Tycho on the matter. Here's how he puts it:

Pretty much all they have down is the dismissive hostility we see every time one of their heads breaks the algae of their fetid little pond. That ain't gonna do it, not when every one of their barbs - barbs directed not at competitors, but at the public itself! - are broadcast instantaneously to the people with the greatest interest in their medium.

The PSP that is so routinely maligned by the gaming community has really come into its own, with a growing library of increasingly savvy original titles and welcome "remasters" of existing product, but instead of emphasizing the product's hard-won virtues they paid a company to lie poorly and pen excruciating songs. This is what I'm saying when they need an intervention. They're completely severed from their customers.

It would be a shame if all these titles didn't perform as well as they should because of Sony PR foul-ups.

when the heck is earthworm jimm coming out, there has been absolutly no new info about it for like at least 6 months and there even was a rumor they were canning it awhile back, as for devil may cry wasnt it announce dlike 2 and a half year sagof or the psp and not even a single screenshot of it exists? same thing about gran turismo mobile. I just dont know.

   Re: ryan (Unregistered) - 2007-02-20
 » price drop

imo i think all the psp needs is a price drop down to $150. only $20 more for what i think has been a pretty close race in terms of software (the only time the psp was bad was during the summer of 2005, and that was when the ds was doing its 2nd best period of time(ds lite anyone)).

that and i really dont see too many good looking ds games anythime in the near future (or distant future for that matter) so i think march is definatly the perfect time to cut the price.

 » Sony's big mistake...

To be honest with you, Sony should have released the PSP without a value pack at $150 ($200 absolute tops) back in '05 (at U.S. launch). It was only about $170-$180 when you converted the Yen to USD, so why would they seemingly purposely try to dissuade customers by jacking up the price $70-$80? Nobody knows.

   Re: Jack 'n Los (Unregistered) - 2007-02-21
 » PSP ftw

While everyone touts the price as a factor (There is a trend of Sony products being a bit more expensive than the competition), its becoming less and less of one. Because of the titles being released, I think the PSP will see a bit of a market surge forward.

After all, how many DSs can people truly purchase?

   Re: Agret (Unregistered) - 2007-03-20
 » wtf?

I find it funny that people who own more than one DS claim the PSP is too expensive, this guy at my school has 5 freakin DS's and still says the PSP is expensive.

» People are looking forward to these?.

Uh most of those are crap, Mediocre at best. Homebrew is the only good thing about the PSP.

   Re: Dave (Unregistered) - 2007-02-20
 » crap?

So which titles would you like to see on the PSP if everything in the list is crap? Most of the HB games are shi T, or already done on an emulator that you can use in any console. Personally the FPS games are what I am waiting for, played rainbow 6 on the 360 and its a class game, OK, the PSP wont have the physics or as good graphics but I'm sure its gonna be a winner.

   Re: WarLord - 2007-02-20
 » Yeah

I'm curious to know what kind of games these haters would want to see on the psp as well. Cause if those titles mentioned above didn't impress you, then maybe you should stop wasting your time posting here and spend some time in the DS section.

   Re: Kichigai - 2007-02-20
 » I beg to differ...

To be honest, I wasn't interested in about maybe half the list, but that doesn't mean it's crap. But honestly, how can you say the selection of RPGs we have coming, or the creative platformers? Or games like God of War or Devil May Cry? And I agree with Dave.

   Re: GaveUpTomorrow - 2007-02-20
 » I'm interested in

them all except for a few, and that's just because I'm not sure what a couple of them will play like. If you find that these titles are bad, you probably feel that all PSP titles are bad...and therefore I'll take your PSP off your hands, because it is IMO the best console of all time ;)

@Fallen: completely agree mate,
by the way I'm still wait that piece of s**t of GT Mobile since I joined the psp world..and hope to see in the future some killer app cause by now I'm more attract by PSone great classic title..

 » PSP Blows

Homebrew Kicks ass but Sony doesn't seem to be trying very hard with the psp. It could be that the ps3 is such a disaster they are focusing more on it right now. Nintendo has made sure there are plenty of good ds games and a whole bunch of N64 Ports. If it weren't for popstation i would only use my psp for the occassional game of chrono trigger. I do not regret buying a psp thanks to the hard work of the homebrew community. i have only bought 2 psp games and one of them i got rid of after a few weeks because i never played it.

 » I agree with R Kelly

If it werent for homebrew and console emulation I would never use my psp. Much like the above guy I only bought 2 psp games, and one of those was GTA:LSC and we all know why I made that purchase

Speaking of games were looking forward to...what the hell is going on with Disgaea?!

   Re: GaveUpTomorrow - 2007-02-20
» Well I'm picking up on ur slack then...

as I own 44 UMD games...so if you don't own any....I'm making sure that Sony is still getting the support it deserves ;) I enjoy all of my games too, and play them everyday. I'm working on Killzone Liberation now...it is an amazing game!

I own like 24 PSP UMD games, I support the developers

   Re: Soma (Unregistered) - 2007-02-20

I own 18 PSP games and I am looking forward to at least 10 more PSP games. And I only own 3 DS games. So you can tell which one I prefer.

Why did you guys leave out Full Auto 2, Harvest Moon: Innocent Life, Monster Hunter 2, Wild Arms XF, CRUSH, DJ Max Portable 2, After Burner: Black Falcon, Cube, Exit 2, and Loco 2?
Each of those makes me drool just thinking about 'em.

Plus, as already out games...
SYPHON FILTER! Daxter! GTAs! SOCOMs! Pirates!! Mega Man Powered Up! Wipeout Pure! Tekken! Tokobot! Exit! Ultimate Ghosts 'n' Goblins! Parappa the Rapper!
And tons more...

This list could have been a lot more inclusive.
